Started doing Anki a week ago. I feel like doing Core 2.3k for at least about an hour or two a day, but an average review takes 20 minutes at most, peaking at ~50 reviews due, and I don't feel it's enough. I'm not sure if I should compensate it by increasing my new cards quota (50) twofold. Is it possible to have mock reviews (i.e. review any number of cards whenever I want without fucking up my schedule)? I can't help myself and feel like going through the cards and what I've learned is obviously not yet enough to hop onto immersing.

yes but that's not an excuse for not doing immersion at all even in the beginning
looking up stuff is super fast with yomichan and the real intuitive aqcuisition of words will always happen during immersion and not isolated in anki

as for me, 50 cards seems pretty reasonable if youre doing it around weekends or time off work, but on a regular day 30 seems more reasonable to still maximize immersion time. that being said anyone without a shit job has been getting assloads of time off lately for the holidays.

I think it is safe to say that "Ga vs Ha" is by far one of the most disputed and contested topics in the Japanese learning community. The differences between them are so nuanced that you could write a 1000 essay on the topic and it still would only cover the bare bones. To add to that, most people, natives included, all seem to have their own interpretation on differences which further complicates matters, especially for beginners.

When I started learning Japanese, I spent many hours combing through grammar guides and watching numerous youtube videos about the differences before ultimately giving up. I decided to leave it to immersion and hoped that it would just "click" one day. However, that was 3 years ago. As I approach the 2150 hr mark (lowballed estimate), as embarrassing as it is to say, I still haven't gotten any closer to acquiring は and が despite having seen them usedin billions, if not trillions of comprehensible examples over those 3 years. It is worth mentioning that I started Japanese at 24, which is long past the ideal age to acquire a language, which seems to be anywhere up to age 19. Taking that into consideration, it could simply be a case that it will take me considerably longer than average

My question is for those of you who have been successful with Japanese. In terms of hours, at what point did you feel yourself starting to perceive nuances like が and は on a more intuitive level? For example, you could choose the correct one to use in most situations and intuitively feel it out?

I studied Japanese in college, studied abroad in Japan, received N1, worked in Japan after college, and married a Japanese person. It wasn’t until a few years after N1 working a job in Japan and dating my now spouse (about 6 years since starting Japanese) that I really felt natural constructing certain types of sentences like 私は故郷が恋しい or double は constructions. I think it’s when those constructions came naturally that I felt like I understood the difference between は / が intuitively.

Note that, I’m not talking about an understanding of the grammar — I understood how to read those kinds of sentences a LONG time ago, but I’m referring to using those constructions naturally in real-time conversation drunk with my coworkers after work.

I still make mistakes with に, を, and が though ‍ mostly when it comes to speaking natural sounding sentences using transitive vs intransitive verbs. I don’t think I’ll ever be perfect considering I started learning Japanese in my late teens.

Honestly it didn't take much for me after watching Cure Dolly's very first video on the subject (and the ninth or tenth one as well) + reading in Shinkazen N3 Bunpo book about more contexts and uses for the two particles like introducing new topics or showing contrast (You can find this section later in the book). yeah i started with it and at this point it's in maintenance mode. to me, it's become more about building muscle memory and giving me a low input study method on days where i genuinely don't have the time to do a full session. it also gives me a bit of dopamine to maintain my "streak" which at least keeps me thinking about studying pretty consistently. but my experience in duolingo vs. other methods is just as you said, it barely explains things, it wants me to use romaji mode constantly (it resets my settings 50% of the time i open the app), and the word picker shit makes it so you barely need to think about what you're constructing. you just vaguely look at whatever its written and if you have any natural iq your brain constructs what it wants without understanding exactly why it's that way.

yeah i think duolingo's strategy is to just force so many sentences into your brain that you end up "intuiting" the correct grammar but that's actually genuinely retarded. even other japanese apps have like... lesson phases that explain things to you and quiz you on them. duo gives you a shitty 3 paragraph summary of things (poorly explained every time) and then start drilling you on them as if you learned them already. this is made worse by some of the gamification aspects incentivizing you to "cheat" (look up the words by tapping/clicking on them) in order to complete quests that require perfect or near-perfect lessons. so it effectively incentivizes you to become a shitty machine translator instead of making mistakes and learning from them
