Imoneko on booth sells silicone busts in MDD size. I bought a pair and they have a nice shape and squish despite being huge. You will need a proxy as they're considered adult items and Buyee won't ship them. Lunette Doll also sells MDD busts, but those are much more limited stock.

Tbh my thoughts on silicone busts is that they're a pain in the ass. Unless you need bare breasts or cleavage, it's just easier to buy a large dolls bra and toss some cotton balls in there.

Can someone tell me what's the name for the general style of dress used in this movie? Not just the undergarments in this specific segment, I'll post more pics as an example. Do you guys have any experience with 3D printed dolls? I've been looking at my options for the past few months, and I realized I could buy a printer (which I already planned to do) and the necessary materials to make a doll with the price most go for. Especially since I wouldn't be paying so much import tax on one with all the local sellers. Making a doll from scratch sounds quite fun to me, but I'd be lying if I said I was the most experienced.

I have messed with 3D printed plastic before, and it seemed to be good enough to make for a fine body with proper sanding and paint, but my knowledge ends there. I know there are resin printers as well, though I've never seen the work of one in person, which also sound like a good option. What do you guys think? This is one of a few examples I've found: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2996049

I found this article, what you're looking for seems to be along the lines of a chemise dress, jumper/pinafore dress, bell dress or pencil/wiggle dress.

You can probably find good inspiration looking through old magazines, there's countless of them archived, it's what I do when I want to find clothing to make. I think taking a look into corsets and puffy shoulders would be good too.

I'd avoid using FDM for this. If you're going to do this, resin would be the better printer for the job. Check out the /3dpg/ thread on /tg/; they have a lot of resinfags there. If you do go FDM, you're going to have to deal with smoothing/sanding away layer lines of a much worse extent. /diy/'s /3dpg/ is the place to go for fdm. It's possible, but probably more tedious. Smoothing with acetone (meaning you're printing in ABS or ASA), then applying gap filling primer, sanding, repriming, painting... I think I would just go with resin printing instead. But! The problem with resin is that they typically aren't the most dimensionally stable. That's not to say the finish won't be good--it will be superior to FDM--but that there is a risk in warping during handling and curing processes which could impact things like joint tolerances significantly. And then there's the size to consider. Resin printers are typically smaller in maximum build volume than readily available FDM ones. So you'll need to check that you can print the parts you need to print in one go on the resin printer you would be buying before you do so. There are plenty of cases where people have successfully printed dolls. But it won't be quick or easy process.
Oh and if you thought dollfaggotry was a timesink, well once you get a printer you may have another one of equal measure

Resin printers sound absolutely amazing, but I am not sure it's an investment I'd like to make considering all the tools and environment one needs to properly wash and cure it over the already higher cost, and if I am being honest after spending some time searching further I am a bit scared of handling resin. While I am hardly careless, resin seems quite dangerous to even be around and my constitution is rather poor already, especially my skin and lungs.
I have seen people print dolls on a few, it seemed to come with the occasional misshapen limb as you've said, which would certainly be a problem on dolls this large. Though I've also noticed how smooth the print was right off the machine.
That said, I am not writing it off entirely without proper consideration, thanks for the tip and I'll check out the threads you mentioned.

As for the filament printers, I don't mind the sanding, it's relaxing if not repetitive. If anything my biggest worry is that the doll might feel off, but I assume there's filaments and settings that result in more pleasant textures, and the paint should help too. In the end it's a matter of cost, safety and saving time, I guess I have to decide how much each is worth to me.

I don't know why we're still suggesting acetone like it's 2006. There are better options. I personally use Magic Eraser, which will remove 99% of faceup materials including the sealant. For any tough spots, you can use brush cleaner (Windsor and Newton is the agreed upon safe brand). You'll want to wipe and remove. Don't let anything settle into the doll. They're just plastic, after all. Please note that just because a material is safe on vinyl it won't automatically be safe on resin. The reverse is also true. A quick Google search will save you hundreds of dollars and also heartbreak. If you're not wanting to actually remove the faceup and just remove like a dirt spot, gently dab (DAB not wipe, smudge, pull, or scrub) water onto a cotton swap and gently continue to dab until the spot is gone. If your faceup is properly sealed, which all default Volks faceups should be, there shouldn't be an issue.

I have (for better or worse) ignored this post.

After discussing with another anon a bit and doing some research, I ordered the Pure Neemo Reimu and Marisa from AmiAmi. I figure these were a good starting point since:
-They're budget friendly, and a low commitment before going full retard without ever seeing or handling one of these kinds of dolls in real life.
-No faceup or DIY required.
-I won't feel the urge to buy a lot of accessories and clothing for them since they are character dolls after all.
-I like the characters.

However, before I decided that, I was reading the guide and researching the Volks dolls pretty heavily as well. So while buying a Volks DD would be quite a while off until it would be reasonable to purchase for me, I wanted to ask some questions about it and get feedback from anons here. With the Dollfie, I wouldn't be looking to create a character but rather something that just appeals to me instead. So a lot of the process of selection and modifications I'm a bit nervous about the possibility of buying things then having them end up just looking bad or uncanny. Specifically, one of the things that appears really important to me is the face and makeup. In some of the examples I've seen posted, a lot of the perception I have is (I believe) related to how I react to the face. So that's something I'm struggling to understand what the best option would be.
Some options I've considered:
1. Buy one of the standard models (Mirai or Kirin) and modify from there. Faceup pre-done, and proportions match what I want. Generally, the stock faceups from Volks look good to me.
2. Buy a body, and scour the net for a vendor that I can either source a completed face from or commission them to do one. I'm not really sure how to articulate what I would want if I were to commission this work.
3. Wait until the next time I'm in Japan and go to Akihabara to do the Dream Choice program in person. This would be obviously fairly expensive but also probably one of the better options since I'd be able to compare before purchasing.
4. Just try to do the faceup by myself or convince a friend that's skilled in painting minis to help. Obviously this has a lot of risk in it, but can always be addressed by trying this then if it doesn't work out going with option 2.

So some of the questions I have for anons here are:
-If you have sourced a premade Volks head with makeup, what were your impressions on it? Did you feel the need to modify it? What sort of modifications did you do with it?
-If you did a faceup yourself, how did you learn/how many tries did it take to get something you were happy with?
-If you bought a faceup done by a third party artist, how did you decide on which one would be right for you? Balancing appearance and price, of course. Some of the prices I saw on artist-painted ones were astronomical, and I had a hard time understanding the price difference between theirs and what appeared to be very similar quality from other vendors. Was I missing something here?
-If you commissioned a faceup, what sort of information did you provide describing what you wanted? Did you shop around any?
-Have any of you gone through the Dream Choice program? What was it like for you and what are your thoughts on the experience?

I know nothing about any of this and my doll's in the works, but I'm just gonna warn you from my experience with similar creative hobbies that you shouldn't be too cold and analytical about it. When you get a complete character your driving feeling should be love at first sight. You can't have that with a project that you need to DIY or put together from 3rd parties since of course the final result is not there yet, so what you should do is embrace and enjoy the ride, to a degree of course. If you plan too much it's probably gonna suck the joy out of the hobby and you're bound to be disappointed with the result.
However you can see a confirmation of what most people say around here by looking at photos on social media to check what the real thing is like, e.g. a face-up artist. Someone told me for example that Ringdolls don't look nearly as good IRL as they do in the company photos, and when I looked them up I saw that was indeed true.

However I'm gonna piggyback on your post to ask a thing: I have requested a doll with a face-up from the maker, and I said nothing about it because I want the face-up exactly how the maker does it usually, which is very subtle and soft. Am I gonna have to tell the maker "I want the face-up just like you do on the dolls you post online" or do doll makers tend to do something different (e.g. more intense because people tend to like it that way) if not specified? Kind of a dumb question I know.

I don't have a lot of experience buying dolls, but I'll agree the face is probably the most important part.

Assuming you must get it right on the first go since this gets pricey, I'd say to start from there. Look for a face that you like and that is within your budget and get that, whether it has a body/eyes/hair or not, whether you have to commission it or not. When you have locked on to a face, you can plan the rest. Maybe the face you ended up choosing will fit a MDD better than a regular DD (or Pretty, or Sister), maybe the face's skin tone is different than what you had in mind. Wig and eyes are probably easier to work with, and more easily replaceable.
But most importantly, don't rush it. Don't go for a face just because it's the best you can get right now. Don't buy a body you don't know it will fit. Don't go shopping for wigs if you don't know the size of the head they'll be mounted on

So for the first part I'd say... do all three! If one of the standard models makes you go "woah, I need her!", you saved yourself most of the work. If that doesn't work, start scouring the internet for a completed face or a make up artist you really like. And if after periodically searching you still don't find anything that clicks, well, time to make use of that trip to Japan.
Luckily when it comes to DD you aren't starved for choice.

As for doing the faceup yourself, I won't discourage you from that but be aware this isn't a quick weekend DIY job, this is a whole new skill you'll be acquiring which basically demands a lot of research, materials, practice and failures until you manage to make something serviceable. And depending on how good or bad you are at envisioning the final result, not having a full doll to work with might be a handicap. It's an involved process and kind of a waste to go through the effort just to make one single face ever.
But it there's something you want to materialize into reality, go a-head!

Of course this is all assuming you must get it right on the first go and that you're very demanding when it comes to feeling passionate about something. If you're willing to maybe throwing more money at it or aren't too much of a perfectionist as long as the doll is cute/pretty and yours, you might be able to do with one that is just "fine".

Oh, and one last thing. Be aware that as perfect as some dolls might look in photos, they are physical objects that exist in our reality, so any given one is bound to come with some sort of defect, blemish or shortcoming. Maybe it's a dark spot on the face, or a weak joint, or poses that you can't make them achieve. Even if you spend a whole month's salary on your doll, you will need to be able to look past or even love these imperfections.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I know what I'm looking for in creative hobbies and this is the best way for me personally to be happy with it. Especially because of the price tag attached with things. It's one thing if a papercraft from cheap cardstock doesn't come together and I can iterate on it, but I'm not willing to rush a design with more expensive specialty paper without double-checking things first. And this is definitely further towards the latter half of that comparison.

>>45646838
Very good advice thank you. The DIY faceup option is the last resort for me, since I know my ability with a brush is lacking, and at this point I'm not looking to develop that skill knowing the slow improvement rate I had painting minis. Maybe if I had something on-hand that I could reference in person, but I don't think I want to try that blind on the very first doll. I think I would be okay with anything 'fine' or better; and definitely understand that imperfections and blemishes exist. Min/maxing mistakes/enjoyment is part of the research here. There are some things I think I would want to throw some money at for options like eyes and wig, but like you said those come after a face/head and body. The more mistakes in the head/body/wig/eyes portion of the first purchase would eat into the clothes and styling budget which I'm sure the future doll would also want to minimize.

No, you'd usually use the same type of fabric you would use for human clothes of the same style. Very heavy/thick fabrics can cause bulky seams and look unnatural when put on a doll so you might want to avoid those initially.
>are certain fabrics going to be more prone to staining the dolls?
No, unless it's undyed cotton you should always staintest your fabric and your thread. Don't skip out on staintesting thread, those have been some of the worst offenders when it comes to staining for me.

You get an extra pair of feet or some other spare part for your doll and put them on the fabric for a day to test if it stains. Premade doll clothes are usually safe unless it's a very dark or vibrant color but if you buy fabric to make your own outfits you pretty much enter uncharted territory. Most fabric will be fine especially after washing it but when you get the one that isn't fine and you didn't test it beforehand you'll be kicking yourself.
The smart doll store has the option to add a handfull of free vinyl scraps that are leftover from the casting process to your order so you can stain test with those, I really wish other manufacturers would add that option as well.

>> No.45653233

>>45652580
Although there are factors that increase the chances of staining (dark fabrics, heat), it's hard to predict staining with certainty. Some fabric will stain immediately, some will stain after prolonged use, some won't at all. Sometimes you'll stain your doll through invisible color particles on your fingers after touching something. The only proper way to stain test is to use a small part of your doll's body, or a spare part you have at hand.
That being said, this post has a list of Volks clothing that is known to stain. https://www.dolldreaming.com/topic/499-outfits-that-stain/

>> No.45653243

>>45652580
>how common is staining?
If you put your dolls in lots of dark colors, blacks, or very vibrant deep colors, not uncommon. But there's steps to avoid and if you're vigilant it'll reduce the chances quite a bit. Body stockings, skin tape, under garments (panties, slips and hose can be more than just for looks!), outfits with linings all help avoid. The last bit, it's also important to check the thread used to sew the lining, as most times the thread will be the most likely stain culprit. I've been in this hobby for six years now, and the only time I lost a doll part permanently to staining was because I tried a new method to remove it and damaged the vinyl. Stains aren't easy to remove, but they're removeable. What's nice with Dollfie Dreams too is that they're modular. Got a bad stain on her arms? Arms are sold seperately. Thighs, shins, chest, feet, hands? Same deal, each sold separately and indistinguishable from the original parts.
>>45652506
>Staintesting
There's no way to stain test materials without putting them together. This is one of the reasons Smartdolls come with a spare patch of vinyl. You just put the things together and see if they stain. This is the only leg up over Dollfie Dreams they have as you have to buy a piece to stain test properly with. I recommend just buying an extra bust piece if you're super paranoid about it, otherwise just use normal prevention steps and don't worry about testing as it's not fool proof in any case.

Do vinyl dolls with an internal skeleton break easily? What about vinyl? Do things snap or chip under the minimum strain?
I'm not talking about falls or other trauma but simply handling

>> No.45666974

>>45666961
*what about resin? I have this idea that breaking resin from posing is virtually impossible

>> No.45666999

I ask this because I had a couple figures and model kits break on me despite being as delicate as possible. I hate friction joints especially on a small scale, it's a recipe for breakage

>> No.45667129

>>45666961
Resin is more fragile, meaning they are more likely to crack/chip if dropped.

Vinyl dolls are extremely durable. Only exposure to extreme temperature (mainly cold) will cause the internal skeleton to become brittle enough to crack. The soft vinyl that makes up the body parts is more durable

>> No.45667213

>>45667129
>more likely to crack/chip if dropped.
but I shouldn't worry about stressing anything, because all that keeps them together is an elastic band, right? I assume that resin joints wear out over time but it should take years.

>> No.45667260

>>45667129
>Vinyl dolls are extremely durable.
That's good to know. I really enjoy the idea of having no stress that something may snap any time I pose because something somewhere may be slightly too tight and slowly on its way to snap. It's sucked away all my enjoyment of 1/12 figures.

it's true for the most part
hip joints on Obitsu skeletons (also used by Azone 45/50, AngelPhilia) are a notorious weak point
however as far as I'm aware all vinyl dolls have replacement parts available for the skeleton, so if something does break you just swap out the joint

>> No.45668047

If the elastic is too tight it can damage the doll

>> No.45668181

>>45667213
I haven't heard of resin ball joints wearing out before the elastic does. The string will lose elasticity over time and make the doll "floppy." If the string is too tight as >>45668047

However jokes aside you're absolutely doing the right thing if this is your first time dealing with toys or dolls. Absolutely do keep a mental note of how things can go wrong, because there's a good chance that they might go wrong that way for you too if you don't know the problem exists. Not to scare you but this is pretty much the bad part of the hobby. I've had two model kits snap off on me on day 1 because I didn't know exactly how much you needed to sand the joints (a lot, I went too light on them and the tolerances on model kits are garbage). If and when I'll get replacements I'll sand AND lubricate those joints and I'll always do that from now on. Same goes for staining, falls (always use a stand or place a soft spot to land on if the pose is risky, the doll WILL take a nosedive on the floor) and other forms of damage. Over time you won't stress over these things but simply take them as precautions you naturally go through.
Having damage or something else that ruins your expensive toy on day 1 is extremely annoying.

Hibiki has a miko outfit, but that jacket is too much of a pain to change over. Did lead to this cute shot. The warmest place is your girlfriends coat pockets.

The pockets arent real and that made this shot ten times more of a pain to get.

Been looking for live sized bjd that I can print for the past couple days. I asked in /diy/ but got nothing and I don't thing the general in /tg/ would help.
There's someone on Twitter that makes one called Fantasy Dream Maiden. They look amazing and are made from pla plus. But I don't think they sell stls and the doll itself is VERY expensive.
I've been hoping to find something of a similar quality that I can print myself but no luck.

I have many things, but I do not possess wealth or stability in any sense. I was lucky to have a better situation in the past, and now I am following the age old 4chan path of trying to get disability due to significantly, suddenly changed circumstances. Being a person fucks you up, but at least there are dolls. That doesn't help with the flooding and mold problem of this inherited house I cannot afford to fix or pay taxes on (so I will probably lose it, and thus my home,) the lack of jobs in my area (of any kind,) my own body getting worse with age, or the other problems I am dreading dealing with in this coming year. Having Things is nice, but being assured of my own survival and not constantly exposed to stachybotrys would be far nicer.

That would be nice, but alas not. Not to get too much into blogging, but I was adopted to be a caretaker in my elderly family. The stipend from the VA in the last few years was solid, but has obviously dried up as my relatives have passed on. The toll of being a full-time caretaker to multiple adults since I was a preteen has left considerable strain on the ol' flesh vessel, and as a result I find myself in the curious position of having failing health and no marketable (accredited) skills in my 30s. I have a house, but it is a house that should probably be condemned. I have a vehicle, but it is ancient, and failing. I have some savings, but they go to the immediacy of my bills and survival. And even if I sell all my dolls, my camera, and anything else not nailed down... it would only buy me a few months. 2024 is going to be a weird year full of discoveries I'm not looking forward to having -- but if I hadn't been adopted all those years ago, I would assuredly be dead. So, who am I to complain? I will find a way forward in some way... or if that's not an option after all, then I shall enjoy the time I have left, and take my own life later this year at a time and manner of my choosing. I'm content either way... much as I'd prefer to stick around, I've enjoyed my time here on earth despite the hardships. Life is finite and fleeting, my friends! Enjoy every moment you have left as much as you are able, and don't be afraid to take chances. Life is far too short to waste on fear.

Dolk also produces/distributes their own products from time to time. A common thing for them to do is collab with brands to exclusively sell variant fullsets at their shop at a premium. Now I get why this hobby is so dangerous. You've got one doll on the way and you're already thinking of the next (and these aren't even third on the list) not to mention the quickly growing list of clothes
I think I'm gonna have to shut myself out and stop researching new doll makers, stick to this one maker I love and get maybe another doll at best, maybe two more. And I can save on clothes too this way because I can swap 'em out between them... Yeah I'm gonna be safe

I wouldn't even dream of outdoor photoshoots 'cause a gang of hooligans would kill my doll and then me faster than I can take a single picture. If the face is sealed properly with MSC or other sealants it will not wash off with water or even like boiling soap and water - you'd need a solvent like acetone/nail polish remover to eat through the sealant to remove the faceup

Yeah she's fine, I just haven't taken any new pictures of her. In fact, I can't even find the stain anymore. I'm certain it was on her right arm or elbow. I haven't even done any kind of stain treatment.

stains typically diffuse in vinyl, stain cream basically makes the stain diffuse outwards into the cream instead of inwards into the rest of the part

I think I'm done with the hobby, and I'll be trashing all my dolls and clothes. If you're reading this, don't get into this hobby, it's nothing but a money sink, and you'll never be as good as the worst twitter poster.

Interesting because I'm getting into resin after leaving smaller scale toys. What was the event that made you give up?
