I did print her, though she's tiny and it looks like fishing wire is not enough (there's still some visible wire, but it's necessary to be able to "re-tense" her)
it's pretty ugly without colors but I'm too lazy to paint and make a wig and clothes lol
I'll just wait till I have enough money for a "real" one ig

Still not sure about purchasing a doll. But if I do, I came up with a first draft for a dress I would like to make for her. Based off Hungarian tradition outfits.

Suggestions for additions? Never sewn before either, is it plausible?

While I dont exactly dislike their appearance, it seems these dolls inherently lack the 'maiden' quality I'm looking for; even the custom ones from what I've seen in my shallow research.

The lower price point than an Volk's SD is nice, but I wouldn't pay for something I don't like as intensly.

You do seem knowledgeable about dolls, though.

Just found Denver Dolls. Some of their stuff looks pretty damn good. Comparable to Volk's SD. I can see myself buying something like from here instead since they don't have limited buy period.

Denver Doll is a dealer for a lot of different brands. Check out Alice's Collections/ACBJD, Stacy's Pink Ocean, and BJDivas as well -- they all carry a wide variety of resin dolls you might like. I've personally dealt with all of them before, so I am comfortable recommending them.

From time to time I find beautiful Angel Philias custom heads being sold at Yahoo Japan, but there are usually really expensive.
I personally like the Type J head (picture for reference). One day I want to buy one customized, or buy it blank and then send it to some good faceup artist.

I do try to change her outfit every few days or so as well and I usually try to take some new pictures afterwards (which I haven’t taken yet for her current outfit). I change them once a month to match whatever theme/season is going on. Christmas in Dec, rainy for April etc. I still buy 99% of my clothes, so far, I'm looking to change that. But I decided to build all of my own props and furniture. It was a learning curve, but I've learned a lot of useful skills that I use in other parts of my life as well. Working with wood, wiring LEDs, clay sculpting and painting and simple jewelry making (I still buy complicated pieces) are all skills I've learned and have used to make non-doll things for others. Plus they're super cute and fun to have around.
Pic related, everything that the doll isn't wearing I made. The sidewalk is a raised platform made from MDF board covered in spackle that I carved the lines into and painted. Heck, if you zoom in on the lamp post, you can see what size PVC pipe I used since I missed sanding it off. lol

Once you have your doll, you will want to take tons of pictures. You will start getting props for her photo sessions, will spend time browsing doll clothing stores finding cute outfits. You will eventually get tired of posing her in your house and will take her outside with you etc. What do we do? we play with them in a careful way, they're dolls after all but most expensive than average. However, sometimes you just want it to be there, in your desk, sitting around. It heals the soul.

Why don't you check the twitter hashtags to see dollfag pictures and try to imagine what would you do with your own doll?

I got a Holo figure 2 years ago for that reason; to sit around on my desk, to 'heal the soul.' But it just doesn't do that for me. I barely even spare her a glance, except for occasion. I fear the same thing will happen if I get a doll; I neglect her. There are for sure more things to do with her, though.
As mentioned in reply to others, I really don't think taking photos will be my thing. I'm the 'photographer' of the family, but I only enjoy taking pictures of things which inspire me or cool architecture. I haven't even taken a picture of my cat, which I love, for around 5 years.

I'm mental enough to talk to myself. And I've got a good friend who is also a writer to receive real criticisms from.
But I wouldn't create a doll of my own character. I feel like that's weird, maybe even a little immoral. Like some sort of incestuous thing. It's a stretch of a comparsion, but my character ARE my own creations, just as a kid. I am unable to love them, or think them fondly; they are just aspects of me. To seperate a piece of me into a doll....

Right now my thoughts are this: I, by feeling, would love to get a doll. But by thought it's a horrible financial investment. Right now is a pivital time for me; I need around $8k more until one of my educational pursuits is fulfilled before uni, I've gotta get some medical stuff done, etc. I won't have a lot of money or time by the end of this month from school, homework, work, flight training, and the like.
If I do get a doll it may be in university as I'll be on 100% scholarship, but I don't know what my time allowances will look like.

I feel like we share similar views. For me dolls are different than figures since they are so customizable and therefore more interactive. And as other anons mentioned, they are fun to have around, and are worry free since they are fairly durable.

As far as creativity goes, they were responsible for starting my journey into photography. Although funnily enough I rarely do doll shoots as I realized I enjoyed taking photos of landscapes more. I also plan to get into 3d printing/sewing as well so I can arm my girls.

As a cautionary tale, I’ve learned the hard way that body suits don’t necessarily protect from staining! Thanks to some grey Volks boxer shorts with a black elastic waistband, nines has what looks like a few spots of bruising on his abdomen, hip, and butt despite using the stock protective suit. It’s my bad that I left them on him for so long (like since I received him). I just found out when I swapped him into a version 2 DD body suit, which does seem like a significant upgrade from the one he came with, especially in color matching and neck coverage. On the bright side, the choker still fits, but barely! I made him a trashy-looking tank top for shits and giggles.

As for 3d printing, I got the Ender 3 pro. Still a great option, though it looks like the Ender 3 V2 is a more popular pick now. Came with a malfunctioning limit switch, but I luckily took up a promotional for a free bag of extra pieces of hardware. If you get into 3d printing, get a glass bed. So much easier to use, level, etc.

Also use Cura for your slicer and look up ideal settings. Makes a big difference (12 hr print -> 6 hr print. Same quality)

It sounds to me like you might enjoy the pattern drafting side of sewing more than the actual construction. It’s fun and challenging to come up with a design and then build the shapes that you envision, and silhouette is important for lolita/historical styling. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a fair amount of trial and error, especially when you are just starting out. You can’t underestimate how important precision is for sewing.

"better camera" really just gives you more control when taking pictures, not necessarily better pictures
the main thing I've found that helps get "better than real" photos is lighting
sunlight is nice because it's more or less pure white (or more like, what we evolved to consider "white")
but it's a single directional source, so on a clear day you can get some pretty harsh shadows
you really want to use at least two lights from different angles (and play around with the angles for a given shot until you're happy, pic related)
outdoors you want to use something to reflect some of the sunlight back at the subject at a different angle, like a piece of white cardstock even (since it's a doll and smol)
oh and the other thing is holding the camera as still as possible, which can be especially hard for phone cameras
maybe look into a cheap, small phone tripod (or even monopod)

You are right in assume that I am a single male. Of course I've already confronted the idea of 'life-sized' dolls, but I would rather not drop that type of money and commit a whole area for storage/display.

I think most of the ones I'm seeing are the volks ones (although I don't know enough to be certain), so I was looking at those. It seems that the heads are the most expensive parts, which surprised me. But I did notice that the ones that I could find already had full makeup, so maybe the bare ones are more reasonable? if you can even find them, that is.

You can buy blank heads on Volks' webstore for around $30-$50, and if you want to try painting your own, there are guides around. I want to get the ears printed out, anyone know what's the best type of print to go for to get a smooth looking part that's ready to use? I'm just going to find someone on ebay that offers the service, buts its kinda daunting as there are so many and i know nothing about 3d printing.

idk, everyone played dumb when I was first starting out so I had to stumble around in the dark for a while.

Now my prints wont stick to the clean bed and they expect you to learn in depth electrical engineering and an alternative power source for the fans just to replace a broken fanblade when all they had to do was say "unscrew these screws, get this fan, plug in. Profit".. So I haven't been able to print consistently for a few months.

Thinking about it, SD say that you're free to use the files and even profit from what you make, so maybe i should just wait a few weeks and there will be people selling them ready printed. Once I have a set I can make a silicone mold and then make some from resin.

to my knowledge, no. it was created because there were no others. I try to choose the most visually appealing pictures out of ~115 twitter accounts. @oso_ma2 has cute/suggestive ones, but most other accounts with slutty dolls look very fake, like products on a magazine rather than pieces of art, or something that feels like a frozen moving moment in time.

Finally put together my first doll after sitting in a box for who knows how long.

Destroyed half the drills on the wig because it took me like fifteen tries to get it on her head but I still think she is cute.
