Nothing in particular, just better characterization in general, even if some of it contradicts with my image of him from fsn. He is still portrayed there as THE orthodox mage but I find it more fun compared to the anime, also his conflict with Kariya is better illustrated while in the anime it wasn't fleshed out well enough imo.

The easy reaction to this is to just say “what character isn’t, in Zero?”
But I got curious.
Tokiomi doesn’t have much characterization after the Rin prologue. (Only that he trusted his student and gave Sakura away, telling Rin to forget about her.)
And even during that prologue, we had the beginning flashback and his little jest after Rin solved his Will.

And Zero translated that all well.
While I don’t think/remember the flashback from FSN appeared as a scene proper, we did get to see his teacher and caring side with the scene where he taught Rin.
We also saw how much he trusted Kirei and his thoughts about Sakura.

What was it that you perceived before and how was that different in Zero?

Maybe I shouldn't have said "contradicts" and said "exaggerates" instead, because none of it comes out of the no where. For example, the guy really hates technology in Zero, and the narrative (aka Kirei) comments on it a lot of how he is using convoluted magical methods whereas he could just do it like normal people, although in the fsn prologue Rin says "It was the master of the Tohsaka family who said that if science is moving toward the future, magic is moving toward the past.". I didn't expect him to be modern, but to at least be aware of the existence of simpler technological methods.
There is also that he is overly serious in Zero unlike fsn where I expected he had has this humorous side to him, given the clock prank and all.

Was the “Master of the Tohsaka family” that Rin mention Tokiomi, Zelretch or the original Tohsaka (as in, the one that began the lineage)? I could never figure it out, but if it was Tokiomi, than I guess you’re right.

Mahoyo 2 and 3 are left with Souji and Alice. For the former, the child training organization and his "family" (the person he references as taking him out of there) as for the latter her family, Yumina and the first. Shove some more church development and Aoko's grandfather somewhere in there too and you have enough for two more mahoyos. I feel as though Nasu hasn't expanded much into these topics because they're meant for mahoyo. Perhaps I'm just coping or him bringing it up in LB6 is a bad sign that's about to change but it does give me a tad bit of hope mahoyo still has a place in his long term plans for the franchise.

In my opinion, sometimes TM goes with some cliches in their VNs, and that isn't always a good thing.
The cliche I talk about in specific here is the "normie friend that isn't involved in the plot" (Arihiko and Issei). Don't get me wrong, Arihiko is memorable as fuck and I love him.
What I wish to say is that these characters are often one note, don't matter to the plot and only appear at the beginning to characterize the main character and give him a connection outside the supernatural world.
IMO, they would be better if they actually *mattered* to the plot. Not as in becoming aware of the shit going on, but as a genuine part of the protagonist's life, the friend they are meant to be, playing a part into the character's development, even if from the sides.
Like Arihiko just going to Shiki and saying "Yo, Tohno, what's going on? You acting wierd lately, and there's been rumors of you in the city late at night with some shady people ffs." or even a "Let me join in on the fun!", something that sparks conflict and pressess Shiki further into the mental breakdown.
Or Issei coming around and actually showing us more of the inocent beauty of Shirou's dream, of simply helping others and the happiness that brings.

In other words, an actual friend and character that *shows* the link these characters have to the normal world, and their bonds.
Rather than just the delinquent friend that appears occasionally and the annoying priest that appears even less.

Mahoyo changed this, but it was a different scenario, where the SoL was as much part of the story as the supernatural.
While TsukiR didn't change this, we only saw the near side, and I wonder if we will get propper Arihiko action on Red Garden, where things will be more grounded and surrounded by Shiki's propper life.

Reading this thread made me truly realize how few people actually read Mahoyo. All these talk about Mahoyo adding to the lore, how the sequels might go even further in some obscure points, etc... and like

no that's simply isn't going to be case, because that's not AT ALL what Mahoyo is about. Mahoyo's "lore" is the background of the background, and the rare times it comes forward it serves only really construct a character backstory.
The focus is ENTIRELY, no 80/20 or 90/10, ENTIRELY on the characters and the self contained story.
You will no get groundbreaking lore in Mahoyo, but this simply isn't what the series was build for.
