Not really. I hate Nakahara's natural laugh so her laughing in all available higu rados was torture to me.

Also I was hyped because if it was a WSJ, it would've mean some new exposure, heck if i landed something big like that I'd tell people too (of course I know you can't tell them the series). And for all of it to come back to her being in a main role for what is essentially a Chinese anime that no one would be interested in (very remniscient of a similar role she's done in the past, where I dropped it cause it was obvious everyone was phoning in their performances) feels dull.

You need to stop caring what others think honestly. If you like her, what does it matter what your friends think about her? Not everyone is going to have the same tastes.

I think the reasons Nakahara doesn't get more mainstream roles are that she's not popular anymore with her previously targeted fanbase (young guys), and she has never built up enough of a crossover fanbase with girls. She also doesn't have any kind of gimmick/novelty to make her more interesting to otaku. You can tell she sees the anime industry as just a job, so fans can't relate to her in that way either, because she doesn't (nor does she pretend to) share their interests. And she's "old" by seiyuu standards.

So, her name in an anime isn't going to generate buzz, nor bring in an audience the way someone else's name would. So why hire her? She's dependable, professional and talented, but in an industry that has become about idol culture and quasi celebs, Nakahara is too traditional as a seiyuu to be exciting to those in charge of casting.

That's what I think, anyway. Which is a shame, because I think she's an amazing actress, who can really shine when given the proper quality material to do so. But I also wonder if Nakahara even cares. At the end of the day I'M has gotten her steady work throughout her entire career, and that's probably enough from her POV.

Your theory is probably correct. Especially regarding the "seeing the industry as just a job" part, I definitely have noticed she doesn't really play any gacha games (especially AL or GB considering she does feature in them), outside of her bread and dog posting on Instagram (and the only anime posts she does is basically when she has a role in it), that's the substance of her posts, so I can see why she doesn't generate a buzz.

I wonder why she stayed traditional though? I know she has stated before in the past she doesn't like the idol/seiyuu hybrid, which I think is just a consequence of Lantis and I'M trying to push her for a solo career in the mid 00's and really early 10's. But I always thought people should adapt when their job changes, but I guess when you don't really have a singing talent it really doesn't work.

Also I guess her definition of steady work and my definition of steady work are different, considering 80% of her roles now are just one-liners, it just seems she'd be getting peanuts at this point considering her gacha games have dried up too.

I'm sure one day she'll get a big role, but I guess I'M would need to bother getting her an audition.

Well, what would be your idea of adapting in this case? Like you said, singing was never a strength for her, so it's amazing she even had slight success in that regard, and she never enjoyed that route they insisted on pushing her on. So, she stopped it likely as soon as she felt stable enough in the industry to do so. But when she did that, that's also when her roles began to drop off. That was her one hook for otaku.

Adapting these days is establishing some type of online/YouTube personality in order to gain a bigger audience. But that's just not who she is. I feel like her instagram is her attempt to break away a bit from the expectations of her twitter. She wants people to follow her there, but she was 100% upfront about what she planned to post.

As for steady work, I'm sure she makes plenty of money to survive. It's not just the roles, I did notice if there's an appearance needed for something she's involved in, she usually will be included. So she seems to be up for events and livestreams. She's hosting the Higurashi radio show. She's doing that weekly radio drama. She does more foreign dubbing than she used to as well. And she has some key roles in various anime,. She's honestly more active than she used to be a few years ago. And if she is married, which she likely is, I'm sure she's fine financially regardless.

But I also hope she does get a big role in something popular again one day. But I wont hold my breath for it.

I don't know if another radio show would help. She used to have that one with that comedian who dresses like Vegeta, and that died after a few years. If you look at her wiki, she's done tons of radio shows in the past, including quite long running ones. But again, she was younger and more popular then, so she had an audience for them. I think for her to do a radio show with a younger, more popular seiyuu, it'd have to tie back in to a series they're both involved in, and have some kind of chemistry/personal friendship to make it interesting, and I don't get the feeling Nakahara cares to play the friendly onee-san senpai who takes younger seiyuu under her wing. I remember reading once that her seiyuu friend Mikako Takahashi guested on some younger seiyuu's radio program, and the younger seiyuu said that Takahashi being there was like a friend coming to visit. And then they brought up Nakahara, and mentioned how if it was her guesting it'd be all business/it'd be part of the job for her.

What I do think might work is her doing something with Shimono. He has a huge fanbase, and they are clearly great friends, and have that familiar comfy chemistry he doesn't have with anyone else. His fanbase would rub off on her. Her guesting on his Abema show last year gave her a big rise in follows on twitter. People genuinely seemed to like her with him, and it was the highest watched ep they did that season, which is impressive, though I know a big part of that was celebrating Shimono's 40th. But yeah, if she did something, like a talk show, or variety type series with him, that'd be awesome. But it wont happen. They like pairing him with younger seiyuu.

Another thing I thought was interesting, was that there was a video on bilibili a couple of years back, where someone made a bar graph showing who's had the most work amongst all the I'M girl over the years, and KugiRie was first, but not that far behind was Nakahara in second place, and Chiwa Saito was right after.

I agree with Shimono, they've been friends for over 20 years now but I can't remember why (I think its cause they debuted at the same time, or they went to the same VA school and then both went to I'M). I did watch the episode you're referring to, I found it sweet, especially at the end because she actually wrote him a letter that basically said that she treasures their friendship. I think Maaya would've done a shit job there so I think the producers did a good job asking her to come on when she got sick.

I do wonder if something happened in 2011, because that's when it seemed her roles started to dry up (I knowpart of it is definitely idol related). Maybe Ladies vs Butlers and SnQ fucked her up where she became more picky with roles.

I don't know if she's necessarily frigid or a bitch. I think she's likely in a place in her life where she doesn't care about making new friends, let alone younger friends who are essentially competition, and are part of the reason why she doesn't get the amount of roles she once did. She definitely did have lots of seiyuu friends back in her prime seiyuu years, though .I think she gets along best with people who entered the industry around the same time as her (since they bonded over their shared experience at the time), and/or were people she looked up to/ were kind senpais to her. I do remember reading Ayaneru speaking of the characters/weirdos in IM, saying she respected people like KugiRie and Nakahara, but that they were quite normal people in comparison to the rest of them. Hence it's just work for those two, it's not about being a personality.

And yeah, Shimono and Nakahara entered I'M at the same time, bumping into each other at the entrance as she asked for directions to the wrong agency. It's a cute meeting story straight out of shoujon honestly. And they had a radio show together, which was Shimono's first one. Essentially, she was told by someone in the agency take care of Shimono because he seemed kind of nervous and hopeless at the beginning. She spoke a bit about that on the abema program. It's pretty funny, because she gives him a lot of backhanded compliments, while also simultaneously flirting with him. And yeah, she wrote an embarrassing sentimental letter, which she said she'd never normally do, but they asked her to, and he found it touching, but they both also thought it was hilarious.

And I agree, I think having Nakahara on that specific ep was the best choice because of their history and easy friendship. It's honestly the most at ease I've ever seen her when doing something like that.

And I think a big part of her lack of roles in 2011 (and beyond) was her dropping the idol game. I think 2010 was the last time she released music for her idol career. Then she stopped all of that and closed her fansite/fanclub.

Either that, or she pissed someone important off in the industry. Because she used to be everywhere/in everything in the mid-2000s. They pushed her hard back then. Though they did say they wouldn't know how to market her without the idol thing, so that's why I think it was her ending that charade that caused the drop off in roles. They weren't lying when they said she wouldn't "sell" without it.
