made it to 6dan back in november, I dropped back to 5 before the year ended. had a day last week where I went 4444+tonpuu4. honestly I wasn't even tilted that day, things just kept going wrong even if I made the right choices. still, I'm having a bad streak right now too, current pt: 175/2000.

today I had chun + otakaze + 4p pon, going for toitoi, my tehai was 555s (one red) + dora 8m. I drew 6s but I tsumogirid. now that was a clear mistake in my opinion, as the dora is not likely to ever come out, and a cheap win wouldn't have been bad either in the situation. later I drew 9s and cut the dora, as 9s is more likely to come out and it's still a mangan. later I drew both another dora and another 6s. it ended in ryuukyoku :((( I think if I got this agari I wouldn't have gotten last today.

I'm slowly changing my playstyle to be more defensive, for example I added the rule "don't push for noten bappu vs oya (unless it's extremely safe or extremely important). now sometimes I get games where I might get overly cautious.

today I destroyed my cheap tenpai vs oya 2fuuro + kamicha's aka ryanmen chii + likely dora in hand, and then at ryuukyoku no one was in tenpai. tokujou is a strange fucking place

I'm not very good at this game but I wouldn't have chii'd it. I guess your line of thinking is that three 8s are already out so no one should be holding it? Also I would have riichi'd that hand too since only one 9s was left. I'm traumatized by looking at logs of rounds where I don't win and realizing most of my waits are in the dead wall. Good thing it came immediately though.

It's a marketplace like ebay where people can sell their stuff but for japan.
You can check their estimates on shipping on the simulator page (https://buyee.jp/help/simulator).). For me it comes out to be about 5k yen for a 3 kg package but it probably changes depending on where you live.
They do have occasional offers on shipping though, in november they had free international shipping for a weekend and last month they had 3k yen off.
For more information you should probably ask on the /vg/ threads, a lot of people bought sets from there during the free shipping deal, someone even bought 10 (>>>/vg/277065961).

My impression of Hong kong mahjong is that the players just go for speed all the time, trying to be the first. In riichi it's a lot different because you have to aim for yaku otherwise you can't win. >> No.22941840

>>22941701
yeah, that must be truly shitty. but even if you know nip it gets exponentially harder to get better in my opinion. after the first dozen books you'll know all the basic theory that exists, yet it takes hundreds (thousands?) of games to really nail everything that you supposedly already know. I often get these rounds where I think "hmm, this seems really dangerous" to a honitsu or other call, but yet I push because I'm in tenpai. all these subtleties get more and more important as you start playing against others who have all got their basics down

If you play enough and develop your own system, then you can still get better. You could also try looking at some tenhoui replays. Even without commentary, you're gonna notice the things that every good player does.

What book would you read if you knew 日本語? if it's something I've read already then maybe I can sum up some key points for you

I can imagine that, must be similar to another 'intermediate player hole' where you have lot of pieces of information in your head but need to go through hundreds of games before you digest it all and know how and where to apply every bit.

Thanks, but I don't even know where to start. I'm still just an amateur and haven't been playing for a while. Tomorrow I'll be done with an important commitment after which I can get back to playing regularly but even then it's a busy year for me.

I dunno why 1dan+ people queue in the ippan tonpuu rooms though. There's at least one of those people in every game.

Gold room tonpuus have really shitty players though. people who don't defend at all vs riichis, deal into every honitsu and go for 1000 point hands even if they need a mangan to avoid last. absolutely clueless guys

How do I learn to look at other player's discards? To see whether they tsumogiri or not.
Every time I try to do that I just get bored and get back to my hand.
I feel like at my current level I get by on the defense aspect just by looking at the pools so I never really bothered to do that, but it's still a necessary skill to learn.

>> No.22979041

>>22978760
The standard piece of advice is that you should first learn about what information you might infer from the discards. After you know what to look out for, it gets easier to remember key events, like "kamicha dropped a 3-5 taatsu". If you don't feel like that information would actually be useful to you, then there's no use expending your limited resources on trying to look for it.

Also, when you have a valuable hand (good speed/shapes, expensive, or both), you should just ignore the others basically.

When you have a mediocre hand, that's where it gets tricky. I would say you should first focus on counting your genbutsus. If you get something that is all kanchans with no doras, then you should try and keep safe tiles for the dealer and the one who is last (assuming you are not dealer or last). I think doing this is simpler than remembering tedashi-tsumogiri, yet you can get a lot of mileage out of this one "trick" if you haven't been looking at this before.

>> No.22979567

>>22979041
>After you know what to look out for, it gets easier to remember key events
Thanks, I think this will help. I'm not yet at the point where I can infer someone's waits from what tiles they discard, but looking out for signs of tenpai like dropping a pair or sequence should be good enough.
The other tips seem useful too, thanks for the help. I honestly felt like my utter inability to pay attention to the discards was from an attention disorder or something, I'll let you know if I get better at it.

>> No.22979951

>>22979567
the better you get at tile efficiency, the less you have to focus on your own hand.

you can't really infer someone's waits if they have a closed hand. there are some things, like an early 5 discard making 1-4 and 6-9 more probable, but it's all just small shifts in probability.

it's against calls that yomi is really useful. if you don't pay attention there, you will hit a wall sooner or later.

also, when you first learn this stuff you might turn into a chicken and start playing too defensively. just be careful not to overvalue the "uncertain information", and stay aware that your own hand (certain information) is the most important factor that decides whether you should push or fold
