Denpa(電波) is a Japanese subculture characterized by bizarre and eerie themes. It originally began as a derogative term for mentally deranged behavior, but over the 1990s was adapted by otaku into their culture. In part, through artistic expression within manga, anime and visual novels, and also separately as a genre of cute and quirky music.

The purpose of the thread is to share denpa works and discuss denpa subculture.

I slightly revised the description of the thread, and put a fitting image for the OP. You might ask, how that is related to denpa subculture - and well, it is the very essence of insanity, in the form of a doujin circle - "Bukimisha", the Strange Society. Encountered as I was looking up information about an old doujin album, this circle truly befuddled me. To be covered in a future Denpa Pentateuch blog post.

In my opinion, the same way doujin music isn't simply Japanese indie music, denpa isn't simply any bizarre experimental music. That said, the definition is set in stone - we use a later term to retrospectively refer to music with a similar aesthetic.
I'll make a note to further look into this album. The fact that these tracks were sent by separate amateur musicians piques my interest.

I thought to also mention "Kimi ni Mune Kyun" - this 1983 song is listed on the Nicovideo definition of denpa music as an early predecessor, despite being the product of one of the most famous Japanese bands at the time.

Since people were talking about denpa anime last thread, I would really recommend Machikado Mazoku airing this season. I don't really know how to describe it but it has a bizarre, denpa-ish feel to it. More than anything I've seen in a long time. The strange timing of interactions and sound effects create this tone. Same director as Di Gi Charat which also had that feel. The word 'denpa' is used a few times in the show which made me think to post this.

Outside Japan, and aside from this thread, there are a denpa subreddit and a discord server, but they both seem relatively inactive. I believe every large general-anime community has its own cell of Nanahira fanboys, too.
As for activity within Japan, in the past there were very active 2ch threads. I believe today most Japanese denpa activity is centered around twitter, though not in any organized manner. Maybe there is also a Japanese discord server.
I think that's the gist of it - not much of a community, and very niche outside Japan.

Hello /denpa/, it's been awhile. Haven't been back since I uploaded Miracleluminal. As you can guess I'm in Japan again for comiket. I've been a bit out of the loop, but I know to get some Mosaic.wav when I see it. If there's any suggestions on what I should pick up tomorrow it will be much appreciated. You can bet it'll be uploaded if I pick it up.

There isn't really that much denpa coming out this comiket, is there? Aside from https://rish-0013.tumblr.com/ and mosaic.wav and the camellia album, which is probably going to be uploaded anyway because of his popularity.

It is a sweet song with a cute kyun appeal, and a cheesy video, but I don't understand why the Japanese have likened it to denpa. Is it because their affinity to the song is also marked by a kind of embarrassment?

>> No.21855280

>>21853568
There are several cues which may have lead the Japanese writer of the entry to liken this song to denpa music.
The first cue is that the song uses onomatopoeia in the form of "kyun kyun", an element common in modern denpa music.
The second cue is the bizarre nature of the majority of Yellow Magic Orchestra's work - a modest representation of the Western "Japan is weird" notion.
The third cue is the techno-pop (synth-pop) genre of YMO, which has had major influence on the doujin side of denpa music.

Are these enough to justify its appearance there? There are many more albums and clips of "Japan Weird" theming which haven't made their way into the definition, including the very "Bikkkuri Suizokukan" sent above. The definition doesn't mention the influence YMO had on doujin denpa, so the inclusion of the song in this case is redundant, in my opinion.

>> No.21855881

>>21855280
Thank you. I was listening to the song again until I realized I was probably looking for a deeper reason where none existed. It seemed only to sound like a very sweet pop song made especially cute by the usage of "kyun kyun", and that's it. But the melody did get stuck in my head. And while I haven't listened to very much YMO music because it never quite stuck before, it seemed the song does have a special quality I thought maybe I wasn't aware of, to be included on such a list. In the end, I realized my attraction to melodious moe pop easily compares to why I like the song. Your explanations are very helpful.

I had a pretty intricate passage about the origins of onomatopoeia and cute sounds in denpa brewing, but my browser crashed so I'll simply have to put it into writing in an orderly manner in a future blog post. The Gymnopedie rendition at the beginning here https://youtu.be/giugkZRPTow is quite captivating, and nice. I wonder what other kinds of music can we hear from this indeed bizarre appearing circle.

>> No.21865785

>>21863948
As far as I know, Shinji Hosoe has not had any involvement with denpa music since the mid-2000s. The most recent possible contribution is one track within Ikuko Ebata's 20 year anniversary album "いきものフレンズがかり" (http://amnicola.net/?pid=120983224)), released under the ZIZZ STUDIO label. Ebata has mainly provided song lyrics in recent years, aside from this album.

I wouldn't anticipate Hosoe to stray from his line of techno music for denpa at this point, but who knows. Maybe we can convince him to give it a try again.
>>21865551
Judging from the YouTube channel that uploaded these videos, it seems like a capella is a recurring theme in Bukimisha's works. Their original M-3 entries from the late 1990s describes them as a circle covering anime theme songs in male voice. I mail ordered a 1994 CD by them and likely more in the future - when they arrive I'll be able to better tell what sort of music the made. Firefox has the option to change text encoding which fixes it, but running the URL through google translate is also an option, especially considering the convenience of the machine translation. Unfortunately, I could not recover text from a links page the circle had, at https://web.archive.org/web/20001207033800/http://www.bukimi.com/shashu/link.html

If you know of any way to read this page properly, it'll greatly help understanding what the circle was in comparison to other circles. Bukimisha lists pretty much all big circles in their links page - Troubour, Myu, Whoopee! and mplayers, but only mplayers list them on their own links page. Must had been a smaller player, perhaps even only a one-person circle, with occasional help from Hirotada Kodake of Kodake Rokuon, as they worked together on albums before and shared Comiket booths in the past few years. It'll take some more research before we get a better understanding of the people behind each circle.

It didn't work before, now everything appears well. Almost. When I view "original" some of the text is still translated. From a quick run through, it seems that the founder of Bukimisha was a fan of both Comiket and the Japanese Sci-fi Convention, and active as early as 1985 in ASCIInet BBS. I noticed several familiar names on his list of people he communicated with on ASCIInet, and then realized that BBS is the origin of circle mplayers RECORD, and indeed, they all went on to participate in the junk.test line of albums: composers Masao Asakawa (m-a) and Masaki Sahara (Saparak), and of course, Ikuko Ebata.
In a similar manner to how Masaki Sahara adapted an older Manikyua-Dan song into a vocaloid cover (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjcuMJVg42g)), Masao Asakawa adapted an mplayers song he composed himself in 1995 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1a_biqweXo)) into a vocaloid cover (https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm16968378).). I wonder how many more like these I can find. Saparak also has an extensive list on his own website (http://www.yo.rim.or.jp/~sapara/link/link.html)) and lists Bukimisha there, though the description completely plays along with Bukimisha's founder "divine status". Although Bukimisha's founder remains unnamed, he was a rather connected figure and probably a bit older than the others (considering how early he was in) and should be in his late fifties to early sixties today.
I attached a photo of him with a bunny girl cosplayer in Comiket, probably around the late 90s. Some of his photos have the date stamped on them, with several photos having crudely censored dates for some reason. As awkward as otaku can get, he strikes a mighty pose with his apron and communication gear. Beautiful.

Both arrangements of that song are sublime and I especially love the carnival swirling feeling with that bright melody shining over. It bears such a striking resemblance I would be shocked if it did not in any way. I hear other influences of 70s & 80s adult contemporary music that I can recognize on across other songs from that playlist, like maybe some Todd Rundgren in that song as well. Enough elements of more progressive stuff gets mixed in too, but in an understated way which doesn't try to kill the authentic feel of the 'retro' sound. That's what I like about "Miss".

It's true that no musician lives in a bubble, without outside influence. It wasn't uncommon for Japanese doujin musicians to write about their favorite bands and influences in their personal websites. In mplayers RECORD's case, it's written in their member page.
https://web.archive.org/web/http://www.mplayers-net.com/members.html
Note that the information is slightly different between the two first and two last captures of the page. The information here also tells us that Masao Asakawa was a vocalist, whereas Kunihiko Yoshiwara was a guitarist and bassist, so the vocalist for the aforementioned song must be Asakawa himself. From Cerbe's page, I found out that mplayers stands for "music players" (slightly less impressive).

You can find some of the songs in the playlist in the mplayers RECORD discography page.

>Bizarre and eerie themes
So can we talk about horror and folklore here?

>> No.21958802

>>21957349
As with the music, normally there has to be a link to otaku in one way or another, so discussing "denpa-esque" VNs (Shizuku, Chaos;HEAd, etc.) would be fine, but non-otaku horror literature would not. However, as we've seen with other things, there are ways for people to grasp the denpa mentality outside of otaku (like Kinniku Shoujo Tai, Fumie Hosokawa). I think the OP needs to be slightly revised so that this is clearer, but to be frank, I can't recall a time in which the thread had discussions about anything outside the music, so I wonder how much that is needed.

>> No.21958806

>>21958802
I'm unclear as to what denpa really means then, as I always thought it was fast paced strange erratic music like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EUYBWhVkKg
But the OP says bizarre and eerie stuff, which conjures much different media

>> No.21958922

>>21958806
Then the OP clearly needs some working to make it more apparent. There are both a denpa subculture and denpa song scene, which are similar in nature but not inherently related.

Here's another single for now. I've ripped all my buys from comiket already, I've just been busy blah blah. I'm uploading other stuff including the Miracleluminal Live Album and プチリズムEXtreme. Twinkle even had a new single that released, and a ねこみりん best of compilation if people are interested in that.

The albums/singles I buy are posted by circles on Twitter that I have followed for music in the past. Albums/singles I buy at comic market typically have not released yet until literally the day I buy them at the event. It is unlikely they are released in any other form at that time. Even if they did, I was already set on owning a physical copy. I even opt to buy older singles/albums that circles sell from previous events if I really liked them, but don't physically own. I also like to get some of my stuff signed by them from time to time. It is a little irritating that I have no idea what a circle is selling until the week of, or mere days before the event since I do plan my walking buy route at the event per day to be as efficient as possible. Believe me summer comiket is a hell hole you want to leave immediately after procuring your stuff.

My friend visited this past Comiket and got himself the new MOSAIC and Poyahchio as well (and brought back Picolony Nauts 6 for me). He told me that it was impossible to stop in place for even a second to have a short conversation with the circle members. He did shortly converse in basic English with Camellia and Kayamori, however. Do you know who exactly it was to run Poyahchio's booth this time? I assume Katahotori was there as well, but I'm told it was run by two very friendly women. Hope you managed to get through everything you wanted and get out in time before being locked again in queue.

I am going to assume you meant to refer to my post. Anyway I do remember 2 women running the booth where I bought the プチリズムEXtreme album, but i vaguely remember there was a male there with them as well. I have no idea what Katahotori looks like. I cant believe Picolony Nauts 6 is an album I don't have. I'll probably pick it up next event or order off of Toranoana.
On a side note I think when I bought the Twinkle single I think it was ちょこand みるく that actually sold me the single since they were signing some of their stuff. Though I kinda hoped ひろて would be there.
I probably spent more time trying to get into that particular hall (South 1 & 2) then I actually spent buying CDs. My route was flawless, and lines were minimal to none for the circles I visited (I did buy a bunch of non denpa music) . Even a famous wall circle like Camellia I probably spent at the most a couple minutes waiting. This was day 4, which wasn't anywhere near as busy as Day 3, but not as slow as Day 2. Day 1 was to test the waters of the new Comiket format since Industry and Doujin have split between Big sight and Aomi exhibition (where I bought the Miracleluminal Live album).

The addition of the 4th day and the doujin/industry split made the event tolerable in my opinion in terms of crowd distribution. In the past I'd be part of the 1st train crowd and arriving before 6 a.m. This event I could sleep in, catch an 8 a.m train, get there around 9, event opens at 10, and i'd be in by 1030. I didn't miss out on any of my buys neither. I live in a humid tropical area, but Japan's summer weather I am not a fan of. Looking forward to going to a spring comiket.

I previously heard that the three days of Comiket were split generally for male-oriented doujinshi, female-oriented doujinshi and mixed. My Comiket catalogs from 1997-2002 tell me that in that period doujin music was mostly sold on the third day. Was it also on the third day in past years? What need is there for fourth day with the new model? From what you wrote, I understand that industry and doujin booths are in separate venues with separate queues.

This probably qualifies as denpa IMO, it has the requisite repetitive droning four-on-the-floor beat, and the catchy chant-like lyrics.

I would also say it has the typical chord progressions but I don't know enough about music theory to really get into that stuff properly.

There are also songs that combine upbeat music with dark lyrics though. If that's acceptable, then this one is about a girl that notices more and more people are going mentally ill in Shibuya so she decides to give everyone anti-depressants, but halfway throughout the song she notices everyone is starting
to disappear (suicide?) so she gives up and decides to "say goodbye" as well.

denpa collection for sale!!

>> No.22028743

the few bucks you get from selling those makes no difference man, keep those. One day you'll look at them and think of the good old times.

>> No.22030220

I'd personally thought of giving away my collection to someone, though I've yet to meet anyone who would really want them. It is either that, or all of my collection will likely end up priced-to-move at my estate sale someday, with a slim chance of any buyer from around here instantly being able to appreciate the music. In which case I see the discs getting donated and possibly divided out from thereon, if not trashed entirely.
I wish that they don't all go to waste, as I prefer they get into the hands of an already admirer of such music. I, too, don't want to get into selling them individually over the internet, nor try to make any of my money back from what would seem to be a tough bulk sale, so I think about these things nearing the end of my desire for collecting as well.

>> No.22030621

I'm not really looking to turn a profit. I figure most of my CDs could go between 2-5 bucks each, I think that could be reasonable. Shipping around the world would probably be 100$ or more, I'm not sure.

It's a very impressive collection - of note is Mandichan's denpa musician artbook. While many items in the collection tempt me to purchase it, I've spent too much on the music in the past several months and I simply cannot allow myself to purchase it in full. The shipping and customs make even a meager offer cutthroat in price.

>>22030220
>>22030621
I find it hard to believe any non-collector would take upon themselves a collection of more than several dozen CDs. All of them really take up a lot of space. I can't imagine how cumbersome it must be to move them around.

>>22028743
It's inevitable that for some people, the good times have already passed. It's a shame, but it's better to let go of the CDs before they become a reason for argument and spoiling the pleasant memories you had of them.

I wish there was a legal way of making some of these music CDs publicly accessible (data+scans), at the very least those out of circulation. The more hands they move, the greater the risk of them being harmed or thrown away. There will come a day in which one of these CDs won't be found anywhere again. I hope that whoever takes these upon themselves is willing to cooperate with us to put as many as possible on record.
