Let's suppose you come across the word " 貿易 " (which means "trade"). The left kanji (貿) means "exchange". The right kanji (易) means something like "simple". You can then look up the kanji on something like Heisig's Remember the Kanji to get or make the mnemonic for it out of its respective radicals.

Holy shit I just started listening to random computer-related Japanese videos (particularly Linux videos) and I feel like I could get better at listening from this than any other material.
