You may want to consider reading ParaLost before Kajiri, although it isn't really needed, it will give you some insight about the things mentioned in some endings. Also go with Akebono version first, then read the h-scenes in the 18+ version, unlike in dies or senshinkan, in Kajiri they are actually not terrible. Some of them are even good.

I just finished my first (and only) route in Otomekishi. I'm honestly positively surprised.

First about the bad: The presentation could've really used some work. Sometimes sprites feel like they don't fit the presentation. The blonde girl ended up being one hell of an egg-head and in general you have rather fluctuating art given that it has multiple artists. (was that actually necessary, given that this isn't full-price?)

Now for the good: I played Chitose's route, and what I liked about the whole thing was, that the characters weren't written too one dimensional. This was mostly apparent for the heroine I chose obviously, but even for the other two you saw some glimpses already. Chitose had quite a few traits for her, and she didn't feel artificially written either. (i.e. forced to be "cute" all the time, which tends to always fail)
Likewise the writing didn't assume you are a dummy for the most part. Foreshadowing isn't rubbed into your face, and the general progression seems actually reasonable enough, including the trap-reveal in that route. Although some clichés are still used, at least the results weren't exaggerated.
One problem you could see is how the actual big "festival" with the whole hunter and rabbit thing actually didn't matter much at all. It's not like it wasn't written out. It just doesn't really matter much for the relationship with the heroine(s). No knight moment for Chitose either, which was lackluster. It wouldn't be a problem, if Chitose didn't have so much else to actually write about, but alas.

You also have ero, quite a bit after it actually starts. It's a mix of insanely sugary scenes, quite a bit of light exhibitionism (pic related) and generally a lot of back and forth between the characters. Some of this might surprise a little, but hey. The art for this girl was also good, as it was done by the probably best artist working at this. (previously working for Ryokucha , which is even with the rather different coloring easy enough to recognize. Chitose really looks like the main Heroine of Natsukoi)

This was better than expected. There's just one little thing I'd like to nitpick here. I've seen this a few times, but this whole "I like you as someone from the opposite gender" formulation is just so weird in trap games. Feels like there'd be no love if they'd have the same gender. Devalues the whole thing for no reason. In normal eroge, this might not matter so much, as the gender of the characters is never really the question, but here? Most of the relationship is built upon one party assuming, the other one is of the same gender.

But at the same time, considering it's Romeo and especially considering that ending, I don't see where the fd would fit anywhere in the story unless it's a direct sequel and in that case at least Miyako and Fujiko would be old and busted.

I read Asahi's route in Snow. The first untranslated VN I've cleared!!

It's a classic nakige, from 2003. Kanata returns to a small village perpetually covered by snow, where he works for peanuts at his cousin Tsugumi's hot springs inn. Like in Kanon, he meets girls that he knew 10 years ago, recollects lost memories, and hears about a legend circulating in the village. This VN is very, very pure, and cozy (including the OP and ED by I've). I'd recommend it to people who can't read much Japanese as well.

However, I was left slightly incredulous. In an attempt to bake sweets for Kanata, Asahi puts whole cans of fruit in the oven, blowing it up. A good meal for her is a bunch of raw vegetables in a pile with ketchup squirted all over them. She wounds Kanata when she tries to wash his back. And by the final week of her story, she's regressed to a toddler who can't move, eat, or speak on her own. I found myself weary, and wishing she would do something cool for once, but I guess that would detract from her retard moe. It's justified, since her true form is a rabbit youkai, not a human, but I hope not all of the characters are like this. The protagonist is donkan himself, so aside from Meiko's wit and silly misunderstandings, there's little to bring spice to the dialogues.

Almost done with a first playthrough of Tokimeki Memorial Forever with You, and I'm not sure I'd do it again. I can see why it was popular at the time, but I don't think it aged well. Don't get me wrong I love the art and the music, but the girls seem too flat and it's not really worth the effort. That's the side effect of having that many girls, I guess. There is barely any dialogue and the dialogue that's there is very shallow (I recall a WHOLE convo with Shiori being "this accessory is cute" "it's cute, isn't it?"), you don't really learn anything about them.

It doesn't really feel like you're dating them until the very end because you have to go out on dates with ALL of them to avoid bombs going off. The stat raising is fun but the bomb system is cancer. There's nothing fun about grinding dates with girls you don't like just so they don't drive your reputation into the ground. If you make a small mistake you have to scrap your entire playthrough. I know it's a system they added to make the game harder, but it just makes them all seem unlikable honestly. And I don't get why Shiori was so popular in the day when she's extremely boring and pretty rude. Definitely not worth the effort. I think I'd rather try the rest of the games in the series and see if I like the girls better. Too bad since I like the art style in this one the best.

I really liked the presentation for this game a lot. The nostalgic mid 2000s art, the dynamic screen effects, the I've soundtrack. Even if you don't like the art the effects make it seem very lively. But Jesus Christ all the girls are complete retards, especially the main one who has some awful speech tick. I couldn't even finish the common route. The girl you're talking about seems awful, I understand a part of moe being the feeling of wanting to protect the girl, but this goes too far into special needs territory. I really can't see any of them being in a relationship.

Man, Yuika's VA is incredible. Really disappointing that the whole "acting like her sister" thing had so much potential to make sex scenes with her erotic and then they only used it in one, which ended up being by far the best scene in the game.

Asahi makes her first appearance jumping down from a tree and attacking Kanata's friends with an icicle, so I thought she would be an action girl. However the most action she sees is when she follows Kanata as he's shoveling snow off the inn roof. The others say no because she's blind and deaf, she throws a small tantrum, they relent for some reason, and the result is exactly what you'd expect. The whole route is Kanata trying to stop Asahi from getting herself killed while being forced to endure her terrible cooking. She's a slapstick character isolated from other characters who would make her entertaining, and shoehorned into a pure love story. Fortunately, the scenario is decent.

I usually connect my laptop to an external monitor and mirror the screens. When I have the laptop lid open, fullscreen fucks up like pic related or by stretching the 4x3 to 16x9 without the black bars. When the lid is closed it's fine. It's not critical, but anyone know a fix? It's happened in several games, not just 4x3 ones.

Also, what's the best edition to play Uta 1 on PC? Emulate PS2, or DVD ver with voice patch?

I don't get why you guy do not think highly about the gameplay in pc version. Playing on hard 3 was very satisfying, though I wouldn't recommend it for the first run. The original version do not have rewind function of Utsuwari no Kamen/Futari no Hakuoro, and you would lose a lot of progress if you did get a gameover.

Also I played the remake for PS4, the core gameplay remains the same but it's very easy and I can't raise the difficulty up high like the original. Maybe it will appear if I clear it once or something but I got bored halfway.

If that's just the hard mode, it's bad, like all Eushully hard modes. The game in itself is unfortunately not that great, so hard mode makes it just more tedious. Everything becomes door combat. Every single fucking thing. And that can take a while.

If you want to see how the system was supposed to work, play Himegari. That's the only game with it, that actually makes sense. Past that, they probably lost the guy who made the initial system, copied it and figured "hey, it's going to work juuust fine". Which it obviously didn't. Spoilers: Huge rooms with many spawns in it lead to tedious door combat, as you can only move 1 step at a time with this system. Himegari has this once as well. But guess what, it's in a map where you are SUPPOSED to do that, while you circle around that room with other units towards your goal. In Amayui? PLZ KILL EVERYTHING KTHXBYE. Especially the defense missions are funny there. They give you defensive mechanics and units for that. In hard mode, none of them do anything as they don't get buffed for it. Result? MORE DOOR COMBAT, YAY.

Himegari actually shows how good the game system can be, but gets ultimately ruined too much by its crappy level up system and the grind towards the end. They could've made a really good game with this base. They tried twice, and failed twice.

Thanks for the feedback. I played the first few chapters of Amayui on normal a year ago and thought it was easy so I know the system somewhat, that's why I considered hard mode.

I actually started playing on hard mode after writing that post and already considered restarting on normal after the first level, where the last guy was healing for 2 every turn while my attacks did 3 damage. I somehow did it with lots of save scumming and using most consumables, but it was like at 47/50 turns and almost went game over with the time out. It's just really tedious.

I can see how the whole thing will turn into door combat since even in 1v1 against stronger enemies I'm almost getting killed in a single turn. I guess I will go back to normal.

I actually thought, that the beginning, with few units, was still kinda fun on hard mode. Once you have a full party, it gets tedious though, as you basically move in one blob and as you guessed, every enemy is dangerous, so you need to block the door or whatever with something that can tank. (based on elemental affinity usually)
In Himegari you can and are encouraged to split up. (you get better rewards if you are fast) You also have plenty of abilities to help you out there, like the absolutely awesome "recall a unit from anywhere", which you can then redeploy the next turn at any deployment point you own (you get deployment mana back, when you recall units, so you only pay recalling cost), and "teleport a unit from anywhere to anywhere you have control over". Sometimes a bit costly, but so so good when it comes to splitting up characters and clearing the map. One party done? Recall, redeploy and use again, instead of them slowly crawling back from the dead end while being useless. Likewise, you can save units from death, if they are alone and stumble into a hellhole. I'm actually kinda amazed that this stuff didn't make it into the next games in the series, as far as I remember at least. It felt like the entire game was designed around it.

You have to catch 4 cats in town, 1st one is running around in town.
2nd is to the left of some house in the same area (house you get after getting lvl 3 slave I think) north of where the 1st one is, he wasn't visible I think.
3rd one appears briefly before you enter the zone where you get this quest from, east to rosalindas workshop iirc.

Maybe because it's gibberish in one language and not the other? Writing English phrases in the Japanese syllabary often looks just as hideous. So we probably don't disagree that the best way to combat something that doesn't work in English is to come up with the closest other way to convey the same meaning. The problem I have is that I've yet to see a single translation of any Japanese erotica that has actually managed to surpass or even meet the quality of the original in terms of how erotic its writing is.

That game needs a working difficulty. Either random encounters and dungeons are fucking boring, or bosses are impossible. It's a dumb idea to let bosses scale the same % as normal encounters, given that they tend to have a lot more going for them other than simply their stats.

Even the wiki of GoD2 actually warns about this, which makes it rather sad. Doubly so, because you do want to amp the difficulty a little, as it gives better drops and the likes. So it feels rather stupid, how you try to scale it based on general dungeon difficulty, and then BAM, impossible boss that immediately goes into hyper mode and kills you.

Anyone who played Amayui can tell me why can't I use this 合体 attack? The description says the other unit (Mikeyu) needs to be nearby, and she is. In this exact same situation, Mikeyu's 合体 attack works just fine, since Ioru is standing next to her, but I can't use Ioru's. Both of them have enough SP, etc.
Interestingly if I move Mikeyu next to the enemy the attack becomes enabled for Ioru, but they should be standing next to each other, not next to the enemy.

The weird thing is that I can use the caster's dual attack when the melee is NOT standing next to the enemy (but standing next to the caster, as the skill description says), but I can't use the melee's cat's dual attack unless the caster is standing next to the enemy.
The ingame guide doesn't say anything about having to be next to the enemy, it says that the two units doing the dual attack should be next to each other.

Anyone here familiar with Venusblood titles? I've just finished Lagoon and wanted to try earlier titles so after some hesitating I chose to play Gaia.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to acquire new units to breed. I thought it would be related to heroine events/H(like in Lagoon) but I was very wrong.

Next, because of the 'dungeon defense' mechanic Gaia uses, I thought - maybe I have to defeat enemies in the prison squares, or the tentacle room squares... but those were both wrong too.

At this point I am almost stumped and about to install Hypno or Abyss instead. Using the basic units you get was feasible in chapters 2 & 3 but the later enemies in Gaia just wreck me.

Anyone have a clue about this? I've already looked up the skill list but found nothing there either.

You have a menu with all the heroines where you choose to give them training. I forgot what the other option was called but basically the way Gaia and Abyss work is that the more training they get, the stronger units they can breed, but if you want them to restore stamina or unlock conversation events you must switch between the two modes the game gives you. And you must balance this while getting invaded all the time which can be quite stressfull in Gaia, I think Abyss is a lot more forgiving with the speed and number of enemies.

I'm playing it right now, my first Eushully game so I can't compare it with others but so far I think it's fun enough, the card game could use a couple more abilities to keep it more diverse but I still haven't gotten bored of it yet.

Not everyone sees bad writing or storytelling. If you have fun, it's fine. With time however, and as such with more and more good works you read, you'll start to get higher standards, if you want to or not.
Plus, a certain amount of "bad" can be easily covered by simply liking the general idea of the story/setting. It making sense or not being less relevant. Im surprised they let them get away with that, same with the recent Purple Soft game where multiple girls get introduced as 小学生 yet get h-scenes because it's a simulation or something and they're not real, I haven't actually finished it.

If you ask me, Amazing Grace is first and foremost extremely boring with characters lacking synergy and tons of stale dialogue. The narration also likes to repeat everything way too much.
Honestly, I seriously doubt the game is good for anything. It's too bad at its beginning for that. Though maybe that's its trick. You fall asleep and then suddenly, BAM, twist.

In one word: Polarizing. The good thing is, you can find out pretty fast if you like it or not. In my opinion there are better options, but that's just me.

How long are VNs, really? When I look at VNDB, it says stuff like 2-10 hours, 30 hours, 40 hours, but is it really that? Is it like 30 hours to do all routes and make the majority of choices, or 30 hours just to read to the end of one route? Are they conservative estimates, like if I read quicker, I'll finish in 15 instead of 30, or are games really like 3 days worth of 10 hour reading sessions long?

Like in your opinions of VN's you've read, how long would you say an average route was? Or an average routeless VN, excluding any gameplay segments where you have to go wandering or searching or battling or whatever.

Vndb time is supposed for all major endings/routes. In other words, minor endings, checking out all choices and optional omake stuff should in theory not count. In practice that rarely matters anyway and time is based on "full completion". For hybrids it can matter though. Not like time is very reliable there. EGS is better, if you learn to use it and understand that it isn't length there, but rather playtime.

Aren't that, like, user created content? If that user is a slow reader he could overrate the length of visual novel. I'd say you should only use that as a loose estimate. For example you will definitely can't read a 50 hours VN in 10 hours but you can as well read it in 30 hours if you are a quicker reader than that user.

I've made the experience, that that is actually really uncommon though. Unless you are a super fast reader. The 1kb=1minute reading time average still works very well, and most of the time vndb data fits that. EGS data as well, provided the work is short-ish and not too complicated. (Dear my Abyss is one of those "complicated" exceptions, as an example. Playtime average is 19hours, while it's an unvoiced ~600kb game) People drop games, or don't read all routes, and the longer the game is, the heavier that influences the average.
