as far as 標準語, yes there is. Natives that don't use 標準語's pitch accent aren't wrong by their own regions standards, but as has already been said, and can demonstrably be shown, other Japanese people still give them shit about it.

I found out recently the dictionary on macos tells you which 日本語のアクセントの型 category a word falls into. it looks really useful, but I can't find any good non-macos alternatives that do the same thing. anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Im reading a manga for the first time in jp and I really only understand like maybe 20% of what is being said with checking the grammar guide a bunch and trying to look up words only when I just dont understand anything in a sentence. Then when I read a page I read it in English to see how well I really got the meaning. Is this a good way of doing it or should I be looking up more words? Or should I just keep doing anki some more and wait until I can understand more words.

Can anyone help me get ITHVNR working on wine?

The program itself will run, and I can hook VNs with it. The problem is that ITH won't detect new lines properly so they never get copied to the clipboard... at least I think that's what's wrong since each new line of text appears on the exact same line as the last one.

I'm pretty sure the problem has nothing to do with ITH being unable to copy text to the clipboard or anything like that since highlighting text with my mouse causes it to be automatically copied without issue.

My problem is being around English speaking friends all the time since I got here two months ago. My friends wife basically refuses to speak Japanese with us since she hates teaching. Today I finally moved into my own apartment and the landlady is super nice, so she likes to chat. I already feel a little bit more confident just from one day of being forced to use Japanese.

My biggest issue is I have a very low vocabulary, maybe 400 fluent words and 2-300 non fluent words. I want to learn more but am so lazy!

As an ESL there's some types of vocab where I will get stumped because I never had to talk about it in English or heard anyone else talk about it much. Bones in your body is a good example. But ultimately it hardly matters and it's that retarded ideal of native like fluency once more. Not sure what this has to do with "giving up" because I'm able to enjoy English content just fine without having this type of knowledge actively in my brain. If such a word ever comes up I can roughly place it and that's completely sufficient or alternatively it takes half a second to get the word that I'm missing with no need to pre-study it actively.

For some parts of the language my vocabulary is quite deep, for others it's not but that's the same for every speaker of a language, foreign or native. It's just that a native speakers vocabulary is more well developed in a lot of aspects of daily life usually, while for ESL not living in the country this tends to coincide much more with their personal interess or professional field.

I know the word "femur" but I'd have to look up where it actually is. I know "tailbone" but only because it has "tail" in it. I know "sternum" but only because I have sternum problems. I know "collarbone" but only because someone in middleschool broke one of his playing hockey. I know "rib" because it's relatively common and even used as a name for food. I can't easily remember any other names of bones that don't just have the name of the body part in them like hip bone. Native English speaker btw.

Why do people freak out when the language isn't so regimented? Japanese just have an affinity for context and understand language isn't absolute. You can never speak the absolute truth no matter how hard you try because words are limited reconstructions of reality.

in reality it's probably not going to be THAT harmful in the long run but you are technically missing out when it comes to the fact that you're no longer technically training the ability to recognize the word in isolation

also they take way too fucking long to review properly since you have to read a whole entire fucking sentence instead of just making your brain process a couple characters (and if you're not reading them in full then you can't argue that they're not bad for learning vocab)

Bros is there really a point to reading baby tier manga with mostly hiragana? I feel like I'd be better off reading something with more kanji because that's the goal, right? I was all excited to start the Yotsubato reading pack and I was a couple of pages in when I thought of this.

What do you guys reccomend? Whether it be a vn/manga/eroge or whatever, I want something beginner tier with a healthy amount of kanji so I can at least feel like I'm absorbing some vocab.

The idea is to read stuff you can actually make sense of. You won't get to 100 from zero, so it makes sense to not pick the hardest shit you can find from the get go. You need to ease yourself into the language a little, however it's also important to not stay complacent with the level you're at for too long. But if you're just starting out the chances this is true is very minute.

Just don't stay reading slice of life cute girl manga for years with nothing else.
