Ripple isn't half bad. Right when I started it wasn't bad, and now, after 3 routes, it still isn't. It's actually kinda good, if you keep the "it's old" thing in mind. Saving only at specific points. No backlog. No voice-replay. Only a generic skip function that skips everything. Small as fuck text. But the voice-acting isn't ear-cancer at least. That's always kinda hit and miss once you get to the early 2000s. Would've been nice though, if Giga polished the engine a bit for the Royal Sweet box. But alas, they didn't. Or it was even worse before, I don't really know.

Other than that, the game is actually fun. The strength is definitely not the serious parts. Those generally seem to come fast and go fast though, so it's fine. The length is rather short, even for having 8 routes, but I think it mostly just feels like this, because nowadays everything is padded so much. Having only 10 (kinda short) ero scenes for 8 routes also means a lot less ahn~ in the script of course. Best girl is probably pic related, an osaka girl. It's kinda fun hearing her dialect all the time. Will still read one more route though.

That said, I really need to look into a good debugger to get some text hooking started for these old games. It's readable, but it's not a nice experience after a while. My old version of cheat engine just crashes the game after it attaches, which may however also be something on Giga I guess? (as in detecting the debugger and just shutting down) Well, next time maybe.

This is the worst thing ever. I can take potato resolutions and zero voice acting, but when I'm forced to play a multiple route VN (especially one with complex common routes) and have to play a guessing game when skipping through content it drives me nuts.

Not him, but in that case it seems smarter to start with the oldest one (Ripple) and work your way upwards. You'll get more to enjoy that way. If you just play Parfait, it might be boring to go back.

It's like with Baldr Sky and Force. People always says play Force before Sky, cause the reverse might not be enjoyable.

I generally don't care too much about the ero scenes, especially if it's like in Ripple, but I don't really want other content to be altered, like removal of references to these scenes or whatever. That stuff has a little more value, when there's not much to begin with. Makes it more special? Probably going to wait a while, to see if it still appears or not, and then maybe figure out if the old version still works for me. Then I can compare if I feel that all-ages is weird at places.

I disagree, impact of the best version could be diminished if you already experienced parts of it beforehand.

Well it could be boring just starting in the beginning without having played it beforehand too. It sits in the 60 range on EGS so most people didn't like it all that much. Would be a shame if someone dropped it there and never bothered to check out the much improved version. Not to mention going back can be fun in its own way after you gained familiarity with an author, seeing their roots and how they evolved from that.

Force/Sky comparison doesn't work because Force is a very different experience from Sky and is a 90 score EGS game on its own merit. People mostly say that because of gameplay QoL improvements.

Yeah. Parfait has both, unlike Chocolat. The rest is just the adult version anyway, as there was never a pc all-ages one. Some of the OST stuff may be missing, but I can't say. It definitely feels weird to have a "soundtrack 2" alone for one game. Shouldn't there be a soundtrack 1 as well? Who knows. Maybe only the stuff that's not yet shared or had changes was shared. Ripple for example is v1.03, which is one version higher than the latest version was before.

I think it depends. Ripple is fun. That's it. I don't think it really destroys a lot. It's simply short, not special and whatever "plot" it has is also extremely fast and not particularly interesting. On the flipside you get a great osaka girl among some other quite likable heroines, and a bunch of lame ones. It's nice for what it is. With the plot also being fast, it doesn't really matter that it's kinda not good if it'd be a lot slower. Makes me think, to this date VNs still copy the likes of Ripple, just with the terrible pacing they have, while failing to realize it's only working fast. For example, it really sucks if you go through 2 hours of separation drama, just to get an epilogue of "it's all fine after all, tehehe~". It's very different, if it's basically just a few minutes of that. Because you never really think it's going to be too bad anyway, as it's just so quick. With modern VNs, you only think it's not going to be so bad, because the games tend to suck and have no balls to really go through with it. Exceptions exist (and moege fans tend to hate those).

Standard is the most complete one. However it's a console port.
Re-order are the most complete adult releases. They generally lack what was added to the later console version(s).

Vndb says, that the console additions for these are written by someone else though, so it's probably okay to just not care about them. The characters do however appear in the fandisc, where the writer of the additional characters of the two games didn't work at. It's an awkward situation. At least the two new girls from Chocolat look very uninteresting anyway. Parfait is a little different.

I'm probably just trying standard for chocolat, because I have it now, and do re-order for Parfait first, and then maybe check standard. The advantage for chocolat standard may also be, that it was released 2007. Just a short check of the game showed me the typical giga engine. Re-Order is from 2004. If that still has the Ripple engine, it'd be horrible...

Chocolat: Basically all the standard version should add over re-order is 2 short stories that you only unlock more or less at the very end. On of them includes the blonde twintail from Parfait. This means you either play standard and have everything but lewds, or you get re-order and then skip through the necessary stuff in standard afterwards if you care about the short stories. It may actually be a better idea to read Parfait first before you do the shortstories though, based on release dates. Dunno though.

Parfait: 2 new routes for standard version, however they should be accessible from the beginning. The walkthrough on saiga for the console version (which is basically standard on PC) seems like it's just copy and paste from re-order with the two new routes added to the bottom. So you can play re-order and then check the new routes in standard, if you want to.

There obviously may be new/different CG for the routes in the standard versions, but that's where you gotta choose. Porn or other CG? The choice is yours. It's unfortunate, that there's not just an ultimate version or whatever, but what can you do.

I played sakukoi recently, the common route was alright, nothing special but it was fun. Then when it branched, holy shit. It was the most forced, dry and awkward romance I ever read, instead of having some sort of development into love the heroines just became retarded instantly. You can see their mouths watering over the mcs dick all of a sudden and stuttering all the fucking time. It felt like a low quality anime tier of romance and character development.
I was about to uninstall but then I read about a patch that adds a route for the loli so I guess I'll try that out.

After Ripple, now Chocola(t).

They tried to improve the calendar system of Ripple. They failed. Instead of choosing actions for 3-4 days each time for 6 weeks, you have now more time and have to separately choose each action. Most of the time even two per day. Too much.
The game's structure also suffers. In Ripple, you can just "stalk" who you want the route of. Not so much in Chocola. A character may need an event for them, even though the event is only marked with completely different characters. This makes the entire thing really awkward. Standard edition at least removes the calendar choice system from the last month. It's kinda coming with a price though, that you may not want to pay. (it at least enforces in which order you play the endings of a given route/character and perhaps even a little more)

Other than that, the game starts mostly fun. Basically Ripple v2. A little more fleshed out, but the weaknesses still remain the same. (i.e. somewhat disconnected scenes, relationships between heroines being lackluster, even though they aren't supposed to be..)
The big issue here are the two new heroines. No matter if you play standard or re-order, they are there, with all their terribleness. You already see that something is wrong, when each of them gets a fanservice scene early on. (hands->tits or head->tits) The other girls may have something as well, but none of that involved touching or generally dumb scenarios to force them. A lot of the scenes focusing on these two characters are just bad, especially in comparison to the other stuff. Well, different writer. Still, feels like they didn't even try to keep the general idea of the original.

As for the routes... I'm frankly very disappointed. Standard forces "normal endings" first, which is very hit or miss. But given that the second endings sucked so far, I'm not sure if I should be happy or sad about it.
The second endings/routes are just not making any sense so far. The drama lacks any real root/base which you can believe. For example: The protagonist suddenly gets the message, that his dad remarried and the daughter of the new wife starts to live with him. He's becoming a brother. Obviously gets messed with by friends because of this and whatnot. And yet you get serious "incest drama" where the protagonist feels really bad about liking a girl he met 2months ago, is not related with him, and likes him a lot as well. WHAT. THE. FUCK. I'm two routes in, and both routes have the exact same problem. The drama has no base to believe. It makes no sense to exist as it does. Feels like playing a shitty moege, that was just a lot less shitty than normal before the drama.
As for the first endings, Misato's was just nothing, basically her other route without the drama. Makes a LOT of sense, huh? Not. Suzu's was actually really good, if short and kinda rushed. It also made more sense than the other route she has and the drama works way better. Sad.
Ripple kinda had this problem in some routes as well, but it was just so short, it wasn't as bad if you ask me.

I hope the next routes/endings will be better. I really do. Next is Midori, best girl, who also has another male love interest. Of sorts. I'm actually quite interested, what's done with that, especially given the two routes/branches each heroine has.

I'm done with her route by now, and actually quite enjoyed it. I just like stories and characters like this. Only problem is to care about Kanako after all of that. It was a quite satisfying ending.
Didn't have any issues with her voice though. Not too surprising though, given that best girl of ripple was voiced by the same voice-actor... which I didn't even recognize till I checked just now. Heh. Anyway, had no problems there either. That said, I'm playing the royal versions (for chocolat, the standard version), so I have no idea if anything changed, like for example the sound quality.

Finished Karen as my last Making*Lovers route. As expected, best route and best girl, definitely was a great way to end this VN experience.

I find that a big problem I have with moege is that they just lose momentum at some point in the heroine routes, usually after the first scene. But Karen's route was greatly helped by the absolutely amazing chemistry she had with the MC that managed to bring out the ichaicha and comedy well even during the less dramatic chapters. It feels less like the writers throwing ichaicha in your face for the sake of padding, it feels more "organic", as strange as that sounds when describing a moege relationship. Reina and Saki's routes did this too (the relatively short length helps), but Karen's did it best. It's routes like this that remind me of what I like in tsundere heroines, and how a straightforward moege route can actually be effective if the character writing hits the right spots.

It exists, but they are shit, as far as I know. You could try stuff like Rainbow Stage, but honestly.. just get manga or anime. Though unfortunately with how big the genre got, plenty of anime exist by now that aren't really any good either. Well, trial and error. But the best all-girl VNs I know do have somewhat of a plot. I think you need to focus more on what motivates you the most to read it than the difficulty.
Because when I started years ago (with text hooker and mecab) I read things like rance quest, rewrite hf and guilty crown lost christmas, which aren't that difficult but aren't easy to read either, with 0 japanese knowledge and just willpower because I really wanted to read them, cuz it's really a pain to start reading untranslated vns and you really need motivation to go on, obviously there are limits like don't read a muramasa or a subahibi.
Also a tip; try just using translator at the first one or two untranslated vn you read to know what's going on but focusing on mecab/TA because that's what it will teach you japanese, and after you can get on just with mecab (even if really slowly) stop using translator.

Usually just main art, if at all. (CG, promo, sprites..) A lot of the other stuff gets very commonly outsourced, as you don't need it outside of games and it's not as much. Having a main-artist working for you fulltime is good for other products as well. (official dakis and other merchandise, "artbooks" that may exist for specifc games and so on. For example Yuzusoft does more or less all of that)

Keep in mind that especially backgrounds are also reused between games sometimes and that one artist is obviously not going to be good at literally everything. You may be able to draw the cutest girls, but guys, chibis and backgrounds work very differently. So in other words: Only the main artist would probably be busy long enough to make it worthwhile to hire for some companies. Every game 80+ CG and sprites, add to that promo stuff and the other stuff they may need to do, and you can easily guess how this person is busy. On the flipside you have 20 chibis, or maybe 15 unique backgrounds.

And I'm done with Chocola. Kanako's route is probably best described as: Nice, but Midori exists, so it has no chance of being the best.

Ending-wise Midori's route was probably feeling the most complete. I don't know why her dream was just forgotten in Kanako's route. Devalued the ending there a lot in my opinion. We don't even need to talk about the other two major heroines. They pale. HARD. Misato could've been quite good, but she was underused. The final epilogue made this clear once more, even though she was only mentioned in passing there.
Aside of that, sometimes I feel that the characters don't talk enough with each other. As in, stuff that you see. In Midori's route it's clear how important Kanako is to her. But not because you get that shown. Because you get that told. Matter of fact wise. You never see any reason why these two are supposed to be good friends. That obviously hurts Kanako's route as well, where I feel like there was generally a lot more time on the past needed.

Well, it was fun. Standard edition is very hit or miss though. They didn't even port the ps2 Midori final short story over. Which is extremely weird, given that the game otherwise IS the ps2 version, with all its changes in gameplay towards the end. (god was that change good. The calendar system was already shit enough for 2 months, I'm glad I didn't get another month of that shit..) Also apparently standard has a newer engine than re-order. I'm not sure how bad re-order is, hopefully not as bad as Ripple, but... yeah. In standard you have all you need, other than ctrl actually skipping everything while you have "skip only read text" set. You know, what ctrl actually does in every fucking VN, other than Giga ones. But yeah, it's normal in Giga stuff. As dumb as it is.

It's a little more than that. It's somewhat based on a misunderstanding, but the protag didn't want to make excuses and hated the way Kanako reacted afterwards. (getting held back purposely) Like I said, there was too little about the past to really understand why all of that got so fucking awkward. We just have to believe a little too much as is, and depending on if you dislike or like the general idea of the story, it can go wrong. The reasons, while only mentioned in passing, do kinda make sense, as there were immediate trigger to have both get angry at the other one respectively. For how big Midori's role seems to have been in all of it, it ended up not exactly mattering though. Can't forget that it was a thing though. If she actually WANTED to help, she probably could've. But you know. Being Midori is suffering.

But yeah, I liked Midori's side more. Good old "what do, if you fall for your bff".
