Need some help understanding an example sentence with the 'ように' grammar
腰の痛みから足が鉛のように重く引きずるように歩いていました。
'His backache left him lurching along with leaden legs.'

The double ように in this is whats confusing me because I keep winding up translating it as 'because of his lower back pain, he is walking like dragging heavily like his legs are lead' which is incorrect as far as I can tell

Is there another grammar point in this sentence I'm missing or is it just Japanese fuckery?

Depends on genre. Sometimes when I am watching something like sol or rom com, I forget I am watching in a foreign language. But if it something harder I will struggle more. I still have not watched that much in the grand scheme of things but I feel that I will be fine when I plan on moving to japan in after graduating in 2020.

I also wanted to add that interest matters a lot. If I am bored I understand less as I zone out and think about other shit, while when I am interested I feel like I understand a lot. For example I am watching new game right now which I assume is pretty easy but since I am bored while watching I zone out for periods of time reducing my comprehension, while I am also watching boku ha tomodachi ga sukunai which i like a lot so when I watch it I feel like I am understanding like over 90%.

kinda "started" in august 2017, but I was using duolingo/genki/core so I don't really consider that starting. I started reading like feb or mar 2018 can't exactly remember, but I started watching raws everyday in may 2018. Don't use anki anymore quite at 3500 mined words in july 2018

There's no real set amount of words, but after you've got 3-5k under your belt you can probably safely begin reading and listening with a prayer of knowing what's going on.

As for writing, that's something you pick up along the way. I wouldn't worry about it just yet, focus more on the "learning japanese" part and writing can come as needed.

It probably happens at a different time for everyone, but as for listening, one day it's just gonna click and you're gonna have a combination of A) enough known words B) used to hearing/seeing/thinking about them C) few grammar worries and you're gonna realize that you know what's going on. You'll also notice that once you know those words well, it is quicker to just take in the Japanese as it comes because the moment you start loading English up in your head, you're gonna miss shit.

Funnily enough when I watch the random youtube video their speech is very easy to understand even though I almost exclusively watch anime. Also boku ha tomodachi has a lot of characters who speak non standard, but the vocab is very standard though. Plus the nudity is great.

It is possible to read at basically any # of known words, as long as you're honest about where you're at and ok with the notion that going in over your head is gonna be a tough time.

I started reading 雪国 and there's so many words I didn't get from キノの旅 and various 異世界 novels, yet most of them are genuinely useful (and easy, to boot).

Any new/unfamiliar territory is going to start out miserable, but by the time you're halfway through it you catch on to the habits/favored words of the author. In キノ it's shit like 跨がる、呟く、and the entire phrase "キノは夜明けと同時に起きた". In 雪国 it's anything near or related to eyes and things that relate to vision or seeing, 瞳・瞼・睫毛・眼(まなこ), 鏡、眺める, etc.

yea I've seen a few dozen multi purpose words in japanese that can mean a pretty broad spectrum of things, I just treat them like the english word 'fuck', which can mean anything, when I see them. Words easy to read/understand but you probably shouldn't output them till you really understand them or you're sure to mess it up.

Japanese games are not a good idea to learn with because the goal is to play the game and the text is barely even relevant so when you do overcome the unknown Japanese you don’t even get a kick of dopamine for your efforts. I don't think anybody is totally rejecting it. I took a few languages in college and they all push immersion and input, but you had to learn certain things in english class growing up. Some things are better taught but yea everybody knows at this point input is priceless for 2nd L learning.

you don't want to be the equivelant to somebody that mixes up their and there, or where and were, your and you're, etc. There's quiet a lot of grammar and vocab to learn, despite immersing. I mean either way you are learning but comon sense is the more you can conect to it the better you'll learn it period. You can't just purely immerse unless they make just the right content from A to Z or you do it for half a decade. I tried immersing for years and it didn't do as much as you would think on it's own.
