This is a Japanese language learning thread for those interested in traditional otaku media and language learning methodology but not in learning Japanese.

Need some help understanding an example sentence with the 'ように' grammar
腰の痛みから足が鉛のように重く引きずるように歩いていました。

I also wanted to add that interest matters a lot. If I am bored I understand less as I zone out and think about other shit, while when I am interested I feel like I understand a lot. For example I am watching new game right now which I assume is pretty easy but since I am bored while watching I zone out for periods of time reducing my comprehension, while I am also watching boku ha tomodachi ga sukunai which i like a lot so when I watch it I feel like I am understanding like over 90%.

>> No.20378422

>>20378358

There's no real set amount of words, but after you've got 3-5k under your belt you can probably safely begin reading and listening with a prayer of knowing what's going on.

Like >>20378143 said, after a while, easy slice of lifey stuff and regular vlogs/IGN Japan shit, you'll sometimes forget you're listening to Japanese because you're processing straight to meaning rather than considering what unknown words might be.

>>20378188 is watching a good example of something good and slice of life, 99% of the show is good for daily use vocab, and even the weird shit like Kobato's archaic speech patterns and Yozora's excessive 貴様 usage are good to know so that you know how NOT to EVER talk.

As for writing, that's something you pick up along the way. I wouldn't worry about it just yet, focus more on the "learning japanese" part and writing can come as needed.

It probably happens at a different time for everyone, but as for listening, one day it's just gonna click and you're gonna have a combination of A) enough known words B) used to hearing/seeing/thinking about them C) few grammar worries and you're gonna realize that you know what's going on. You'll also notice that once you know those words well, it is quicker to just take in the Japanese as it comes because the moment you start loading English up in your head, you're gonna miss shit.

Mnemonics
WaniKani has mnemonics to teach you every single radical, kanji, and vocabulary word on the site. Waste less time, memorize and recall way more.
Radicals
Radicals are building blocks for learning kanji. You’ll use them to create kanji (forget about individual strokes) and make mnemonics that allow you to memorize a kanji in seconds, not days or weeks.
Kanji
Learn over 2,000 kanji, hand-picked and cleverly ordered, so you can learn the kanji meanings and readings more efficiently. A Japanese schoolchild will spend eight years doing what you can do in a year and a half.
Vocabulary
Kanji is great, but it’s not very useful without vocabulary. Learn over 6,000 Japanese words, all carefully validated by a human to be common or useful.
Lessons & Reviews
Radicals, kanji, and vocabulary are taught to you through lessons using mnemonics. Practice learned items via reviews until recalling them is second nature.
Spaced Repetition System
WaniKani is more than just flashcards. Our SRS algorithm adjusts time between reviews for each individual item, calculated by your last session. You will see a radical, kanji, or vocabulary in your reviews at the optimal time for you, not anybody else.

It is possible to read at basically any # of known words, as long as you're honest about where you're at and ok with the notion that going in over your head is gonna be a tough time.

I started reading 雪国 and there's so many words I didn't get from キノの旅 and various 異世界 novels, yet most of them are genuinely useful (and easy, to boot).

Any new/unfamiliar territory is going to start out miserable, but by the time you're halfway through it you catch on to the habits/favored words of the author. In キノ it's shit like 跨がる、呟く、and the entire phrase "キノは夜明けと同時に起きた". In 雪国 it's anything near or related to eyes and things that relate to vision or seeing, 瞳・瞼・睫毛・眼(まなこ), 鏡、眺める, etc.

Being fairly new to Japanese, any Japanese concept will raise a lot of questions and Japanesepod101 won’t answer them. I highly recommend just looking stuff up until you feel comfortable, but resist the urge to memorize/review what you just learned, google it again when you forget and you’ll stop forgetting soon enough. If you think you should use anki just look for the stories of people who are stuck in a cycle of finding motivation to learn Japanese => getting sick of it => Taking a long break; they have one thing in common.

Japanese games are not a good idea to learn with because the goal is to play the game and the text is barely even relevant so when you do overcome the unknown Japanese you don’t even get a kick of dopamine for your efforts. The main exception of course are vns and that’s only if your primary goal is the story and not to look at pictures (same goes for manga but that’s not a video game)

>Kara Morgan-Short, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, uses electrophysiology to examine the inner workings of the brain. She and her colleagues taught second-language learners to speak an artificial language – a miniature language constructed by linguists to test claims about language learnability in a controlled way.
>In their experiment, one group of volunteers learned through explanations of the rules of the language, while a second group learned by being immersed in the language, similar to how we all learn our native languages. While all of their participants learned, it was the immersed learners whose brain processes were most like those of native speakers. Interestingly, up to six months later, when they could not have received any more exposure to the language at home because the language was artificial, these learners still performed well on tests, and their brain processes had become even more native-like.
