How do you deal with VNs with long common routes? Reading through everything again doesn't doesn't have anywhere near the same charm and skipping leads to a very disjointed feeling experience.
I just tend to get lazy and never finish anything beyond the first route.

the real fucking problem is when the "skip already read" function is programmed like shit.

we all know this shit, the option is ticked, you skip to a choice and select one you did not before and the skip button stops because there is now unread text. everything is right in the world. but wait, after 3 sentences the scene is literally the same as when you picked the other choice? time to skip again I guess. oh wait! the skip button doesn't work for the entire rest of this scene because the game thinks of both choices as being two different scenarios despite the text being 98% identical!

I've had cases, where even though that wasn't the case, there was a new different line completely randomly all over the damn place. It was an experience.
I also read a game once, which actually inserted real different scenes based on your heroine choice once in a while, even when there wasn't a choice leading to it. Thus lots of disjointed short 2 minute scenes.

None of that is better than the good old "unread scenario with 98% shared text". And it's way too common. I don't even know, did they forget what the word "common" means? It means it's a COMMON component for the different routes. It doesn't make sense for the COMMON elements to have UNIQUE scenes only for if you go on that specific route. No matter how long that shit is.
In other words, gimme more staircase choice systems, the only system that's actually really good. No skipping, ever. Unless it's done really weirdly, I guess.

That's an annoying extra step that follows you through the game, and you'd hear a cut off voice all the time. Your just mad because you're too lazy to learn a language properly to rrad VNs, but still want the people making them to bend over backwards with unnecessary shit to make it easier for you. If you actually understand spoken nip well enough to get by on just voices (you probably don't) you shouldn't have that much trouble learning to read thr language unless you're blind.

It's not just a problem I have with nip (which I really can't read good enough). I tried a few translated VNs like Nekopara, Steins;Gate, World End Economica and the eroge with the handicapped girls. I couldn't finish a single one of them. Like I said it's just not my thing. I want to read books in my bed and not in a chair in front of a screen. Like I already said, I really like all the old fully voiced point and click adventures. I even turned subs off on those. I can't play them when it's text only.

I don't understand how the order of the attacks work, at the bottom of the screen there are bars that increase when you attack and then there's a vertical line that progresses through and when it encounters the end of a characters bar then that character attacks, which I figured out cause yeah that's obvious. But there are numbers next to the bars that seem to shift around randomly when I attack and I have no idea what those are. Also some of the character's skills are greyed out and I don't know how to unlock them.

The numbers are ticks. It tells you how many ticks an action needs, and how much has already been accomplished. It's just there to give you a more accurate idea of the bars, so you know when is what. I think actions also have "recovery time" after they fire, which is basically your wait in ATB. It's honestly just ATB. When you surprise enemies, you'll also see that they have a much bigger wait than you have at the beginning, allowing you 10(?) free ticks of actions before they start to do anything.

As for greyed out skills, I'm sure you can figure that out. I don't even remember it, so it needs to be obvious as well. Like for example not having the resources (mp, tp).

I was actually just about to make a post about this. I'm basically at the end of Urara's route in https://vndb.org/v10617 and it has been a horrid experience. She is such a great girl but her entire route has just been absolute garbage with barely any redeeming features. It is so saddening and depressing. The premise is a school for high society people so it is made clear that shit that's completely fine normally is a big deal there. It's fundamentally moege too so there isn't going to be serious genuine hatred and fights normally, most of the VN is played for laughs.

Yea including all the translated stuff I've read I have had the same impression, the mc always seem to have some complaint about the way fun energetic girls act and the routes always tend to end up with them changing for the worse for no real good reason.

Even Shukufu was like it, he kept referring to Urara as 強引 like it was a bad point of her. On top of that besides the retarded drama and the way it was handled. During the h-scenes she become basically a different person mc even comments on it being gap-moe but in reality it is just shit.

I was really hoping after I got good enough to read vns in nip that I'd be able to find a good energetic girl vn but alas shukufu was a hit right up until the actual route where it missed by a mile.

seira from 恋色空模様 is also top tier smug genki, but the game suffers from a gigantic common route (which is still pretty fun up until the drama bullshit). on the other hand the MC is a pretty fun dude so they get some good shenanigans going.

i don't really feel qualified to say much since i only read one side route, but the characters were real likeable and interesting, and it had a lot of good setup for the main girl. of course that doesn't mean much, nailing the setup and then whiffing the delivery is how most vns go, but it certainly looked promising. comfy music and atmosphere, too. writing is a step above the usual caliber as well. not too high, mind you. but engaging if nothing else.

the girl whose route i did do was a real interesting and complicated girl, they flubbed a bit with making drama where none really needed to be but otherwise it was pretty fun; the rest of the serious bits were good and only added to her character. unfortunately, it had that padding side character feel to it where it answered nothing and accomplished nothing besides get the mc's dick wet.

Even as someone whose kept up with the series the names get confusing. The cast is huge and they all have at least 3 different names, which get mixed together for different combinations on top of that and there's little consistency for which characters call which other character by which name they have. Sometimes a character gets called by one of their aliases like once or twice in the whole game without it being linked to them beforehand so it's like wait what who are they talking about, every time I jump into a new game I have to refamiliarise myself with everything, it's a pain in the ass.

I still enjoy the series though.

I know Koisora was mentioned in this thread a bit ago, but I can't recommend that. Too much awful drama. The writer is pretty bad with that.

He does however have a work without that, where drama stays surprisingly mild and completely understandable: Natsukoi.
This game's only issue is, how it basically is a single heroine game that for some reason has 3 more heroines. It makes 0 sense to play those routes. Common is 99% part of the main girl's route, the last 1% is a short really weird phase where protag needed to show minor interest into not going into that girl's route. Still the best thing he made. How do you make decisions? What is the "right way" to make a decision? I believe 4 things must be considered:
- what I would do in that situation;
- what I believe the protagonist would do;
- the "right" or moral thing to do; and
- how to unlock the route of the girl I like.
But what is the priority order when a single choice does not meet all aforementioned criteria? Which criterion should I/am expected to consistently use when reading a new VN for the first time? Which one do *you* use? OP here. Deatte is OK, the good parts are reminiscent of Imouto yabai. But Deatte takes itself almost too seriously at random times and can cause mood whiplash.

Due to the way the routes are setup I still haven't done the 'true' route yet, but I'm almost there. It's done in a 4->1->2 setup, where you have to do all 4 intro routes to unlock the main heroine's route, and doing the main heroine's route unlocks the two 'side' character routes.

Overall it is enjoyable enough, but nothing really stands out yet, but take what I say with a grain of salt as I still haven't finished the true route. It's pretty standard Hulotte stuff imo, if you like their usual titles you'll like Deatte.
