Although not a nakige one game I recently played made me tear up by the end is kami-sama no game. It starts off as a pretty dark nukige but by the end it deals with themes like true friendship, trust, love, betrayal etc. The changes the characters go through as they face death and hopeless situations are very dramatic. The bonds formed between the girls as they desperately struggle to survive (and being forced to constantly bang the same guy lol) are poignant. I gaurentee you’ll tear by the end.

There are a great deal of very high level concepts in Subahibi and any non-expert eroge reader is going to need to accept that he probably doesn’t understand it all. From there, you reach the point of actually researching and interpreting all this shit, which could take years, honestly. Kami-sama no Game. Light bondage at worst. Dark plot, but it’s a straight up harem. Also a pretty diverse harem ranging from a loli (young for her age type), a middle school student, a slutty high school student, a cousin/imouto type, a college student and a happily-married 30-year-old housewife. There’s other side characters which also get the D.

To survive, the girls need life points — 2 points from sucking off MC, and 3 points for being cummed inside. To keep all the girls alive the MC has to cum 4-6 times a day, every day, for 15 days.

The brilliance of this eroge plot is that forces the girls into a relationship with the MC, and due to the life-and-death situation they all end up relying on and loving the MC. The problem with the VAST majority of VNs is that they AWFUL writing. Maybe the common moebuta filth don’t mind that, and I get that I’m not the usual audience for VNs. Still, my criticism is valid.

I’m not demanding Hemingway, or even somewhat decent writing. But would it fucking crush them to write stories that integrate different girls’ routes into the common route? 99% of the time you know how it goes; you pick a girl, and then the main plot gets thrown out, all the othe other girls disappear, all the tension/drama/development made up to that point is totally dropped, and you finish the route in some short totally separate scenario storyline. That seriously drops my motivation level as the girl(s) I like best typically don’t have a route connected to the common route.

Even if they can’t be connected to the common route is it too hard to at least integrate other girls in with the chosen girl’s route? Why do they disappear or forget that they ever loved the MC? Why they stop having rivalries, hanging out or working together to face the chosen girl’s problems?

No on both. Force is the better game, but it's like going from Final Fantasy Tactics to Tactics Ogre. You're going to be missing all the refinements to the gameplay and annoyed by all the rehashing of plot points, even though Force came first.

Zero is mostly mediocre if you don't mind it retconning the everloving shit out of everything to make a prequel, but the real problem is that they completely fucked up the gameplay with a cancerous camera and area design, eg obstacles and walls all over with a camera that already has severe problems in completely open spaces. It's a fucking mess.

If you want practice and something with relatively easy Japanese, I suggest Princess Witches. It's about 15 hours of harem romcom before the story turns on a dime. I just wish they had put more money into the art because there are virtually no CGs for when shit hits the fan. That's shit though. The change of style doesn't work, because the when the first arc ends, it's right back to boring stuff, flashbacks and recycling afterwards. And that was also around the time you get used to the different style in the first place. Because the characters really don't fucking fit the style. At all.
It's like when you suddenly make K-On into a serious show about the music industry and the dirt and crap that happens there for 6 episodes and then change back to cake, before again changing to the serious stuff. No. Just no. This isn't how you use a genre shift. (you should probably not shift around multiple times in general)

Maybe the game was popular, because it surprised a little back in the days, but if that in itself isn't enough to make you care, it's not very good. Well, the comedy is fine, but that also uses itself up.

I'd guess one route of a typical VN has 5000-10,000 or more lines. 50-100 lines take about an hour to translate. So maybe 100 hours for one route if you're fast?
Translating a 15 pages doujin takes like an hour or two, if even.

Now calculate how long it'd take to translate a full VN with 40,000 lines and you'll understand why VN fan translations are so dead compared to scanlations.

Of course, these numbers are just by my personal experience.

So I'm almost through Utawarerumono Futari no Hakuoro and honestly, I'm pretty disappointed by the two new games.

I played all three games after each other, with no knowledge about any of them. The first one was just amazing, I loved it. Fast pacing, interesting stories, great characters. The middle part was a bit weak compared to the rest but I still loved it.
Second one was a complete disappointment. Like 80% of SoL scenes. Some were cute, but most just made me sleepy. MC was boring, main heroine acted as if she was his mother. The ending just made me mad.
Everyone kept praising the third one so I kept my hopes high, but up to now it's still vastly inferior to the first game. Like, the war was great, but there were just so many fillers. And they didn't even let us feel great for winning the war since that was thanks to the big bad guy helping out. And now, at the end, they shove in some Hakuoro and stuff from the past to make old fans happy. Just feels so forced.

I'm still not done, but up to now it's just been one huge disappointment compared to the first game. I don't understand why the new games are praised so much or how anyone could say that they're better than the first.

It's interesting how the original version of this sometimes still beats the remake in terms of presentation. The remake does certainly have its merits (i.e. the "funny" parts really don't work well in the original), but the original shows a lot more detail about how people are in a room in a 3d sense. The remake obviously only has sprites and backgrounds, like all modern VN. And a CG for each and every of these situations would've probably been too much, seeing how the remake already has around 120 cg.

There are obviously some minor issues due to this. The remake relies more on the "position" narration, due to not showing it, which may not even exist in great enough detail. On the flipside, thanks to ADV format and voices, you also have awkward narration lines telling you the obvious. (i.e. who said the last line) Could've been better, but I still think it's quite alright.

Well, it was a SNES game. It simply had no story. I think that's okay, given that the goal was simply figuring out who did it. Although I personally find it a little sad how that's enough. The "how did it happen?" is getting dumped on you.

The newest remake now gave the characters more color by actually having art and voices for them. But I also kinda felt like that, while it really does improve the "comedy", it also makes you expect more than the game wanted to be and do. Although for what it's worth, I didn't touch the bonus content so far, so I dunno if they make the art and voices a little more worthwhile by actually telling a story or something.

The sequels are definitely one game stretched into two considering how almost nothing of importance happens in Itsuwari no Kamen and how long they drag on the re-reveal of previous game's twists, and worst of all they almost instantly revert its ending of Kuon and Haku being separated at the beginning of Futari no Hakuoro. The first game also had the benefit of being something new while the sequels don't really add anything mindblowingly different to the setting so everything ends up being more of the same, just with new characters. The writers played it too safe in my opinion.

Production values and gameplay were great though, and I also loved the protagonist.
