If /jp/ was created in 2008 and the whole rest of 4chan was already unbearable by then, even though it only started in 2003, that means there were only ever 4ish bearable years of 4chan prior. Being about to be 2018, it can soon be said that the majority of /jp/s time (2010-on, 8/10 years) has been shit, that the majority of 4chan's time in general(2007 on, 11/15 years) has been shit. Considering how quickly /b/ went to shit, this site probably wasn't even good for 2 whole years out of 15. With that kind of comparison, this site may as well have actually never been good.

This about how long blue boards have been a thing, how long captcha has been a thing, how long this board has been a thing(even though I still think of it as one of 4chan's newer boards, it was made within the first 1/3rd of 4chan's life. That's like your life going to shit by the time you were ten and then having shitty teens and twenties and being nearly thirty with no hope of improvement.). All the shitty things about the site have been around much longer than the good parts. What have these years even been for? I understand what you're saying and while I would have agreed with you if this was 2012, the general direction this website has gone in over the past ~4-5 years hasn't exactly been good. I'd say quality has dropped because "lurking culture" has died. Also, even though this site has always had underage users, they no longer have to dig around for it as 4chan is spoken about almost constantly offsite. Combine this with the lack of lurking culture and you have a lot of people who don't understand the local culture running about, along with the common idea that this is the "wild west" and anything goes, the amount of little kids who will post any old low quality shit has increased tenfold. This doesn't even factor in the general increase of internet users (and/or ease of access) compared to how it was in 2008 and 2004.

I agree with both of you to a degree.
The signal to noise ratio has increased a great deal, most noticeably on busy boards, which serve as containment anyway. Good posters filter out of these cesspits, and make homes on the slower special interest boards.
/b/, /pol/, /r9k/ et al are all far beyond the point where they can absorb newcomers and mold them to the board culture, but they still filter out most retards before they venture into places like /jp/.
I miss the "old" 4chan, but the "new" one still has its own merits. /jp/ is busier today than /b/ was when I first got trapped in this hellhole of a site! It's wonderful if you want to bury yourself in one or two interests like a true autist.

People use these markers because behaviour hailing from those sites is seen as unwanted. It's understood, or at least should be, that most of 4chan is made up of people that came from all these "unwanted" sites. In many cases it's just that people grew out of some of those communities of mainly young people and are now rejecting it because they're "above that" now, or they're just separate posting outlets for those people.

It isn't about the people, it's about the behaviour; 4chan boards typically have their own sense of "culture" that people are expected to adhere to, and other behaviour is deemed as outside of the group, and associated with whatever of the "unwanted"s that seems most accurate. Obviously you wouldn't say "go back to Gaia" these days because the people coming to 4chan now... aren't from there. In some senses you could say it's a scapegoat, but it isn't exactly that.

It's the opposite, anything that pops out on 4shit now almost immediately dragged out to reddit or knowyourmeme. Case in point: recently I made an edit of some picture and posted it on some other board, after an hour or si it was on /v/, within four hours it was on knowyourmeme.
