Yes, SD13 is what you want to look for. Be careful with things labeled "SD" as they might be too large for the slim DD. Good brands to look for are 9style and TTYA (which is sold on Leekeworld's site)

Since my main thing is event photography, I use the same stuff also for dolls - a Canon 1D Mark IV and a 35mm, 85mm, 24-70mm and occasionally a 70-200mm lens.

Image quality wise I think that's a bit of an overkill since dolls are static subjects and with a flash or a tripod any camera can take a decent enough photo. Ergonomically a big DSLR is a disaster especially with outdoor photos, so if you're looking for a camera to take doll photos with, I'd give high priority to portability (->mirrorless) and a tilting display so you can play around with angles without having to stick your face in the mud all the time. Fuji and Sony both make good mirrorless cameras.

It's fucking expensive and a little too big in scale for dollfie dreams, one of the worst purchases I've ever done :D It's a series of fancy Canon club member exclusive goodies that occasionally show up on eBay, the lens is a USB memory stick that comes off. The miniature model quality is amazing compared to anything else, but they cost like 50 euros.

Rather look for some gachapon cameras, they tend to be in better scale and cost just a few dollars. There are gachapon lines for at least Pentax film and Fuji digital cameras.

mm, with the big hands it might look a bit better. Here's a picture with the doll and an actual Canon 1 series for scale. The model is just a tiny bit over 1/3 in scale - it's about 55mm wide and 60mm tall while the actual camera is 150mm wide and 160mm tall.

for outdoor shots you'd have to loan out your doll to either a semi-professional photographer who can just take her along to shoots or to someone who travels a lot. indoor is easier. just needs some ideas to setup scenes.

why not just do it yourself? if you have time on your hand and some ability to travel locally you can seek out good sites and just learn until you get it right.

There's always a little cropping, but usually I just take lots of shots with different zoom angles, lighting and varying the DoF and select whatever pleases me most later.

I'm planning to wire up my tablet to my camera, just didn't get around to buying the right adapter cable. That'll hopefully make things easier.

General photography tips can help with making it more visually interesting. Stuff like the grid method or avoiding too much intersecting with the focus will help. Doll specific, arrange it so your doll's eyes reflect light more (it makes it seem more lively), and shoot from a lower angle to line the dolls head up with the horizon. Getting down on the doll's level will make it look more like its really interacting with the rest of the scene instead of just being a tiny object on the ground.

Doll meet today! A few new people this time, everyone's dolls were so pretty. Weather wasn't exactly optimal but luckily the saturation switch in Photoshop works wonders to make the cherry trees look at least a little pink..

Keep an eye out for re-ment and gachapon sets. Food and other cute items can be found in an appropriate scale.

Those Japanese erasers shaped like food make PERFECT food props, because they're in just the right scale. You can buy tons for cheap as well, which is nice.

Always check other doll company sites for things like parasols, purses, etc.

And finally, check local craft stores (Michaels, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby) because they generally do sell miniatures and you might encounter some stuff that works for 1/3.

haha, I guess I learned into it when I was looking at Japanese doll photos and everyone seemed to be doing angled shots all the time, and even though I constantly receive complaints about it, I haven't yet managed to learn out of it.. :D

should learn to vary a bit more, but I often do feel that taking an angled picture helps me to fill more of the picture with the actual subject, and quite often it does conform to the rule of thirds as well, at least somehow. Maybe.

Do any of you have SD16s? I have two and I'd like to tighten their arms, since they're a little floppy, but how do I go about doing that since the band for the arms is separate from the legs and neck? I mean I've looked in the manual and they have a single band that's only for the arms.

What I do is remove one hand+hook and slide the whole string out from the other side. Either knot it further down from the original knot if its very loose, or untie and reknot just a tiny bit farther down if its only a little loose. Then restring. The arms are the easy part of restringing, really. You will need something like stiff ribbon or a shoe lace to pull the elastic through, and something hard and thin like a knitting or crochet needle or a chopstick to nudge it through (I find the crochet hooks more useful because you can grab the string). A hemostat is useful for holding the elastic loop at the end when reattaching the hand, but its not necessary.

I probably explained that badly, so try looking at restringing tutorials and just skip to the arm part. Its really very easy.

Smart doll have the integrated stand, which is handy. The feet and wrists joints have three axis which is handy for some types of posing. The knee joint has less mobility than on the DD3. The vinyl is harder and feels cheaper. The connection between the upper and lower body is just under her breasts, much like on the DDdy and looks better if she wears skimpy clothing. The clothes are generally interchangeable.

The BJD hobby is overwhelming to a complete outsider. The guide is also written as though it's for someone who has some knowledge of the BJD hobby. On top of that, the "community" is pretty overwhelming and DoA is invite-only.

I actually have the smaller chests for both of them as well, the newer pink drops had a lot more interchangable parts. Is not very obvious from the photos but the older models upper body don't fit all of the lower body that well, and the spiky nipple problem use to be worse

I actually have 3, and 1 more on pre order. I will eventually swap some parts and sell 2, they seem to sell rather easily on ebay and profutable as long as you get them pre ordered to avoid the post production price hike.

Cloth wise I have maybe 7 or 8 total, mostly auctioned from yahoo Japan. Still need to wash them and line with clear plastic to avoid color transfer. So no, not doing a lot of cloth changing yet. But eventually I will take more photos once I have more time

I wouldn't suggest it. If she's a DD, SmartDoll, or Azone/Obitsu, she's hollow and likely has metal screws or washers somewhere in her skeleton. They're not really made watertight so its inevitable some will get in there and might result in rust or even mildew. I'd go for a sponge bath with either a soft light or white colored cloth, plain white paper towels, or a magic eraser type sponge and maybe some normal dish soap if she's really dirty. Don't use human soap, it has too much oils in it. Avoid rubbing the face too much and don't use a magic eraser sponge on any painted or blushed parts.
