im also trying to get better at mahjong,
ive been reading osamukos mahjong blog however i feel im not absorbing much of it, i have trouble finding riichi mahjong learning resources online, it think one of the first steps to getting better is knowing your yakus and have the ability to transform your hand into a big scoring hand or knowing when you cant win and simply play full defense

when you know you can win, go for it, dont back down, if you know you cant win try to not lose by dealing into your opponents hand,

It really depends. The most important skill a beginner can learn is a good defense, but I've seen too many players on 7447 bail when they had an advantage.

If someone is telegraphing a chinitsu, if your shitty yakuhai or open tanyao is close you should pursue it. If they call a pon of a yakuhai dora, then it defense is safer. But if they call a pon of a terminal dora, it isn't necessarily a good idea to bail.

Really, mahjong skill is mostly just analyzing the situation and responding properly.

Really short version:
1) There's a book called "Teach Yourself Mahjong" by David Pritchard, it'll teach you basic strategies and explicitly tell you what to look for on both offense and defense. It focuses on Chinese standard, but the principles are the same

2) PLAY THE GAME, it's easier if you just get the experience directly, there are dozens of mahjong games available on every system, most are designed for a wide variety of reading levels so if you can understand basic Japanese, even just Katakana, you'll be fine.

I used to have a list of systems and games that I'd recommend, but it's so outdated by now that I don't feel like digging it up, even though I htink I'm on the wrong computer for it.

If you're playing Tenhou 4P on 0000:

Give up on winning, play to 2nd. Fuck score, fuck risk, always go for the fastest possible hand or you will lose that round. The game is usually over when someone gets a very early mangan/haneman, after that the rest of the players will completely give up on 1st place and play to 2nd and if you don't join that meta-game, you WILL lose.

If you actually want to have fun, play in unranked lobbies, real life, or play 3P.

Yeah, that's the best strategy to win in general. You don't try to construct yakuman every round. You try to get as many points as possible out of the tiles you get. If all you can get out of your hand is a shitty tan'yao, you aim for a tan'yao if only to stop your opponents from winning. If you can't do anything, you defend to not lose points. And from simple rules of probability, those kind of hands will happen much more often than big ones.

WHY CAN'T I RON (furiten rule and general hand combos):

after 5 games where they don't end early, you'll be about equal to, if not better, than 1/5 of the people that play.

I'm not kidding, most of us are godawful terrible. You'll do fine. just spend 10 mins on the guide if you are 100% new, and then have the page that counts the nipponese numbers for that suite open (so you know what you are holding), and people generally won't complain about you being so bad it's painful to play with you.

This are some of the most common yakus, however im still learning them so feel free to correct me!
yakuhai ~ having 3 or 4 of a kind of any dragon, your seat wind or prevailing wind (wind of current round), this yaku can be open or concealed
tanyao ~ all your sets have only numbers from 2 to 8, no 1's or 9's and no honirifics (no dragons or winds), this yaku can be open or concealed
pinfu ~ having 4 straights and a pair that isnt honirifics, the trick to this hand is that the last straight you complet must have at least 2 waits (3pin 4pin , can wait for 5 or 2 pin) this yakue is CONCEALED ONLY

also, if the game is nearing a draw, get to tenpai ASAP, even if you have no yaku and the game draws, you get at least 1000 points from your opponents for reaching tenpai

I got really into akagi, and then I started playing online, and I wanted to play in person, but the only thing I found for a while was people looking to play chinese Mah Jong, and they were usually old ladies.

I finally played a game a few months ago, but it was impossible to be smug and do cool things because I got my shit pushed in pretty badly.

The simple fact that the bot goes first gives it a substantial advantage, since even if you have tenhou (which hasn't happened to me once but has happened to the bot many times), it's going to win anyway. It's still a large advantage even if it doesn't have tenhou.

Also, yeah, they probably are bad, because that's the point of the game. If they knew what they were doing, it'd be a pointless excercise. >>11476498
has a point: of the three main aspects of the game, it only really helps you learn 1. If you already know how to efficiently change a wait or call a correct tsumo/ron, you don't need to learn how not to call an incorrect tsumo/ron.

Debatable. It doesn't take a beginner long to fall in the hole.

To clarify, I meant starting the match, not each hand. since the match could easily be only 3 hands.
