Is it that bad? I was going for an ``in ecstasy'' kind of look, but I guess that didn't really work out then. I guess it's probably the eyes.
I'm happy that you like the background, though. It was the first time I tried drawing a comlete background and it took forever, even if it looks pretty simple.
I guess I'll go back to drawing smaller pictures/sketches for a while, as Anon suggested in the other thread.

No, I meant the pupil and only the pupil. The iris being oval is the least strange thing about anime irises.

For one, they tend to take up most, if not all of the eye space, like a cat's, leaving little room for sclera. For two, they also change shape and size, like the pupils, which is just weird, but also done in western things, so it's not worth thinking about irises in cartoons at all. It should be one of those near-taboo things like contemplating anime contacts or wondering about the sideburn area of a two-eared catgirl's head.

There's no hint of roundness in either the shape of the face or the shading. Most pictures also have a bit of shading for the nose.

Also, the shading on the nose was too light, it seems, but it's there. I just didn't want it too look exaggerated. Oh well.

Do try starting from guidelines or do I go straight to drawing the figure or the body a a whole?
From experience, when I tried drawing as a whole I tend to get too focused on one part, and I end up not being able to connect it to anything.
As for guidelines, I can't do well with them because I tend to end up with insanely thin people as the outcome.

Do I try starting from guidelines or do I go straight to drawing the figure or the body a a whole?

Though it's nice to see creative poses, the one you chose here isn't really possible outside of a zero-g environment or without extremely straining the body to be uncomfortable. It reads well because most anime-styled illustrations such as splash screens favor this type of unrealistic pose, but I think it might hinder you.
Imagine if you tried to jump like that, with your feet overlapping/touching while your knees are parted, and reaching behind you (at a perfect right angle) at the same time. Surely you feel the strain on your spine?
All the same I know what you were going for, but before trying to do just creative poses you should look into natural poses, and maybe try interesting/different angles or compositional tricks instead. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I see you have potential and it would be a shame to have it wasted.

Also, a minor thing, but I think you could afford to add a slight bit of volume to the hair especially near the back of the skull and where it meets the forehead, so it doesn't just look so flat against the head.

About the hair, I tried drawing something like a ponytail, but it seems to make the hair volume a lot less without looking like a ponytail. I guess the shading's partly at fault again.

you have to improve your line control and volume definition

also it's hard to critique something effectively if the artist isn't more "ambitious" about what they are drawing

drawing busts is okay for just playing around but for real practice you should be trying to include the whole figure with as much detail as possible, so no hiding hands or feet

I can't really judge your ability to express values since you went mainly for line art but I can see from how you rendered her eyes that you at least have a very rudimentary grasp on how light works

obviously a basic pen tool would make it hard to express value effectively for a beginner, cross-hatching is a very technical and difficult skill, so I would suggest either trying to render value in pencil or buying a cheap used tablet if you have to draw digitally.

good effort, though

If you guys are attempting to mimic zipatone/chartpac select flood fill the texture or pattern or even set it as a brush. Avoid patterns. some of the samples posted have a patten to the dots. Real zipatone will not have this. Look at manga you will see in general they will stick to the same pitch of dot and vary the size to make it darker. Not always but in general. I remember doing dojinshi way back we couldn't use some of the more fine dot stuff or the fancier patterns since the printer would turn it into mud or blow it out completely, but that is irrelevant here since it is digital. There used to be sites set up with tuts on how to do this or resources to load up in PS. I did find a tut on how to produce gradients and stuff maybe this will help build your library?

Been a while since I researched this stuff so many of the resources I had are long gone.
Really Im just googling zipatone digital tut. Chartpac or letraset might give results too. Deleter had some stuff up but not seeing anything anymore.

Just keep in mind what was done originally. The tone was a large sticker cut to fit the need and stuck on the artwork then trimmed to fit. If you keep to that idea and mimic the original tools you shouldn't have any issues.

Here is a free brush Not sure how well it works.
http://digitalhalftone.com/freebies/zipatone-photoshop-brushes/
hopefully jp wont think I am a spammer.

Also you final use of the image matters. Setting up for print will require a very different technique than if you just going to publish online.

That is the whole idea behind why I linked those pages. It does however have limits. One being you have to have a really large canvas. Attached (if it is not to big) is a half rez version of a test I did with the halftone filter. You must be in gray scale the tomes MUST be without any white, and they MUST be hard edged or you will get gradients. The eyes are an example. Only issue I have outside of the size issue is tonally what looks darker lightens up dramatically so you will have to learn what tones produce what dot pitch.

I think a hard edge tone brush might be easier to do with smaller canvas meant for the internet. The halftone seems to work ok if you plan to publish and need the rez.

This technique though is useless if you want patterns etc like the stuff deleter sells. Those will have to be a repeatable patter or highrez image that you trim and crop to suit.

Again when working with this stuff think about how the original materials were used and it should allow you to figure things out.

Well not really it is essentially 256 grayscale. If you look at the original sized work you can see it is dithered. I actually had to upscale my linework, since it was not intended for this use. This dithering is the reason you would have to work in a fairly large scale if you wanted to use this for print. Those fine dots would get very ugly.

Attached is a 2X screen cap.

Note how sloppy my tone is, I did this on purpose to show the results and I think a bit of the sloppiness helps to make it look like older tone taped manga. Going even further to complicate you could do each tonal level in a separate layer and when running the halftone filter adjust the angle of the tone. In older manga you can tell when a artist was cheap because large fields of tone will have slightly different angles to them showing it was pieced together from smaller bits of tone.

I got hardcore into drawing for like two months, and then couldn't take it anymore. I loathed everything I made, I loathed that I made them, and I loathed myself for making them.

ever since I was little, I've been building and writing a fictional world. My original characters are just ordinary people from it, for the most part. keeping the setting organized, as well as the interractions between individual characters is interesting. If only I'd do something with it. Ah, well, a little at a time, I suppose.

>> No.11079760

>>11072005
I just think up ideas and create characters to go with it. Say I want to do a comic about dog girls in a kennel.

First I need a main girl. Maybe happy and positive or morose and droopy. Then you need a kinda antagonistic but friendly character to go with her and drive the humor. Then you need supporting characters. Maybe a troublemaker type or a little puppy type(or an innocent newbie instead if it's about training police dogs).

After that, you assign them eyes and hair, which you can derive from their personalities. Clothing will go with the situation. If they're being held in a shelter, maybe they're wearing rags. If they're police dogs, then they're wearing uniforms or some type of gym clothes to train in. Then you need like their ears, base them on what kinda dogs you're inspired by for each one. This carries over into their statures too.

It's like that for anything for me, everything just falls into place once you think up stuff. I can't draw characters for the sake of drawing characters though. Probably it's better to think up at least a reason for the character's existence though.

e.g.: This is a little girl playing in a field of sunflowers. You can probably imagine what she'd be wearing and doing at that point. It's just a matter of hair style and expression.

Because I don't like Haruhi or Shinku or characters like them as main girls.

I actually do have an idea like that, but when you think about it you'd wonder why anyone would put up with them, so they ended up becoming more neutral and most of their worst aspects being shunted off to a more purely mean character.

>> No.11082710

Your biggest problem is proportions, if you can at least get that right (its not hard, find a chart from anywhere), you'll have a decent drawing.

You should use references, if it looks off or unnatural, get a picture of someone doing a similar pose and see why yours is wrong. Think of the balance and center of gravity.

Think of forms when drawing, not lines, think of tubes and spheres in 3D to represent limbs, if you can understand the form behind your drawing, it becomes easier to get detailed towards anatomy.

Do sketches, don't jump straight into clean lines. Do a sketch of the environment you're going to do with perspective grids, seriously that shit helps a lot, you can just place things as you want once you setup the grid.

+10 points for no chicken scratch lines

I just want to know one thing from you: why do you come back here and why are other sites not enough for you? DA kids should be the perfect company for you.

same goes for you. why don't you go back to /b/ or wherever you're from, angry kiddo?

we don't want your kind in here, shitting up good topics with your rage against someone who you personally don't like.

Because this is my home board and I've been here since the board's inception. There's many things that I end up only posting here, for the sake of contributing to these threads, which have been here for quite a long time.

What about you? What have you contributed?

Oh, thanks for the redline. I think you are reading the direction of the torso differently from what I intended, but what I tried with the breasts was so out there that I can understand the mixed reading...what you did looks tons better, though. I ended up lengthening the left arm and didn't pay much attention to the right(maybe out of laziness?). I think you are right, the right shoulder in general is too short and contributes to making her arm short. But thank you, I will study this and try to keep those things in mind...

You don't have to make two replies to the same comment, Mags.

i'm not magister, in case you can't tell two different posting styles apart.

but that's to be expected from someone like you who grasps at straws to attack him, like a monkey slinging its own shit at anything it doesn't like.

Your gestures aren't bad, but you might want to consider actually getting up and posing as the silhouette yourself. For example the rope pulling one is very uncomfortable looking, and that doesn't support the action.

I apparently made a 'Flat-chested rap' and posted it at <http://0845.com/vtcez>
(he posted the lyrics at <http://pastebin.com/mXg23X6W> ). It's pretty hilarious in a bad way, actually!

This thread is for people who try to become good artists and everyone here should have outgrown of such meme shit by now. I guess that's hard to understand for someone who still goes to middle- or high school.
