>Fortune Arterial's story revolves around the male protagonist Kohei Hasekura, who transfers into a prestigious public school in the style of an English six-year school encompassing junior-high and high school students. The school, named Shuchikan Academy (修智館学院 Shūchikan Gakuin?), is on an island named Tamatsu Island (珠津島 Tamatsushima?) off-shore from mainland Japan, and the only way to get there is by boat. Soon after transferring, he discovers that one of the students in the class next door to his, Erika Sendo, is in fact a type of vampire.

S;G's translation was reverted (it has never ended, it's still an active project) because the vast majority of it was utter trash.
Blick himself admitted to having greatly overestimated his own abilities.

And you know what, who didn't see this coming from the get go?
The project when it had just started received tons of scepticism due to its supposed record breaking speed that no previous speed translator had ever managed to even get close to.
And it just turns out that the scepticism wasn't unfounded, Blick wasn't some kind of unparalleled super translator, but merely someone overestimating his own abilities just like everyone had guessed.

Or maybe they've woken up and seen that since people are already pirating their game, that they can at least make -some- money off of it if they give people a legal means of buying it. They've acknowledged that piracy isn't theft, but publicity.

The actual numbers (for professional VN translation) are secret, though they are infamously low (i.e. ridiculously underpaid, not a reliable source of income). Having seen some numbers, I can confirm this. (Though it must be noted that properly paid professional translation is extremely expensive, so it may not be a valid point of reference.)
Fan translators, naturally, are paid only in complaints from ungrateful fans. Involving money in fan translation has traditionally been a 'the worst thing you could do' situation, and VN translation has had only one example of money being involved in unofficial translations to my knowledge.

Quite. Unless you are a fast translator and do a decently short game for JAST, you can't even make enough money to live off of in the US.

But considering the state of Yumina (announced halfway 2010), what I heard of how long Family Project took to release (and it being unfinished even at release time), and previous experiences with more money-oriented companies pulling ridiculous shit to justify bullshit (most notably a company that acquired an MMO bullshitting about getting DDOSed as an excuse for not releasing a promised patch in time; that and many things were later found out when the original creators were fired and told the fans) make me very hesitant to trust JAST on its word.

It's too easy to shift the blame to 'them' when the audience is unable to have any contact with 'them'. How can I trust JAST saying their problems are all the fault of people practically invisible to us?

You mean that game that had to be completely retranslated because the translation they got was awful and wrong? Oh, and it's a huge pain in the ass to QC because they have to try to fit long names/descriptions in text boxes.

>How can I trust JAST saying their problems are all the fault of people practically invisible to us?

Well, I doubt they would conspire to lie to me, but JAST literally got the uncensored CGs for Saya this week, so I don't know what other proof you need. It was obviously translated almost 4 years ago.

At least in the case of Saya/Hanachirasu/Kikokugai, what reason is there not to believe them? The translations were already done. There was basically nothing for JAST to do besides wait for Nitro+ to give them what they needed. If you're saying Nitro+ already gave them the CGs and modified engine and JAST has just been sitting on it, that makes no sense.

They also have to communicate with the original developer for everything they need, they need to modify the game to use the new engine and whatever other changes they wanted to make, they need to test the game on consumer systems, they need to prepare and do marketing, the game needs to be printed and shipped...

But most of all, part of the reason may be that releasing as much as possible as quickly as possible is not optimal from a business perspective. Releasing titles too quickly can actually cost you potential sales, and even in big companies they delay games just to avoid release schedule collisions; for example, Nintendo purposely delayed Super Smash Bros. Brawl's PAL release until well over 3 months after the American release because Mario Kart Wii was released around the same time frame. Super Paper Mario similarly 'required 5 months for PAL conversion'.

Especially with the 'please support us by buying our games, we're totally not making a profit here!' strategies employed by VN publishers here, it would make sense for localized VNs to have a relatively long tail, and profit would be maximized by releasing slowly.

JAST sit's in production limbo on almost all of their games. Communication issues is probably part of it, but I think they just announce titles way too early. Often they'll announce a title before any work has even begun. MG for example doesn't usually announce titles until a bulk of the work is complete on a title.

I heard from one translator that with exchange rate they got around 0.01$ US per japanese text character. To get an idea what that means, check tlwiki's script size, each japanese character is 2 bytes. It's low enough that it's not a livable rate for translators and still high enough that it puts some games out of reach for game companies who have game sales usually only in the hundreds.

then again, that's what happens when you make an official release of a game which tecnhnically isn't professional to begin with. That's why Ryukishi07 hasn't made 07th Expansion a professional company yet,so they can have more freedom in their works. At least witch-hunt and Ryukishi are practically working together these days so we don't have to worry about stuff being cut anymore(and the first Higanbana has been translated by another group, and now they are currently working in the second.).Higurashi also got an official release in France(and rated for kids,go figures...)and they also had to cut stuff for copyright reasons....

Considering a lot of things are very difficult to figure out without having been there or being familiar with other historic context, some explanation is justified here.

Back when MangaGamer was still 'that company which officially sells machine translation-level localized games', there was a TL group called Sonozaki Futago-tachi that was translating Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. Though their translation was good (and it clearly had a lot more love put into it, with tons of TL and context notes and shit), they were extremely slow. They managed to finish the first episode, Onikakushi-hen, and had started translating episode 2, Watanagashi-hen, when MangaGamer had just gotten their shit together (having released Da Capo, Suika and Kira Kira, which had acceptable translations) and announced at Anime Expo 2009 that they had licensed Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. Though MG's translation is clearly inferior, they were as fast as Sonozaki Futago-tachi was slow, and by December they'd released episode 1-4 (while SF was still at the start of 2). SF ended up dropping the project, and MG eventually released all 8 original episodes.

Onikakushi-hen, the first episode, is available in full as a demo, from either the Japanese site (in Japanese, can be patched by SF's patch), SF's site (their version) or MG's site (MG version). The rest of Higurashi in English is only available through MangaGamer.

The first image is justified by context, at least it clearly looks like that. I'm assuming $protag just got into $magical_situation, just received an infodump on the subject and is approached by $girl who assumes he's familiar with magic and asks something impossible of him. 'She just told me about this' does not always mean 'I know what you are talking about because it was just explained to me', it can also mean 'this was just explained to me and it's still not clear, so I don't get what you're saying'.

The latter two are clear wordplay, something that can only be done when you understand the intention of the original sentence (Japanese proficiency) and have a decent grasp of the target language (English proficiency). Being able to butcher sentences into bad puns which still convey the original meaning is the mark of a good translator.

The one Dodder is working on porting probably isn't nukige, from his recent post

>I’m also working on a separate title, one that’s been requested fairly frequently by MG’s fans. I’m not allowed to give it away, but it’s being given quite the treatment. I’ve been tasked with completely porting the game from it’s original game engine over to the Kirikiri game engine, the same one that runs the seal games, Kara no Shoujo, Jast’s Girlfriend is the President, and a whole bunch of other titles (it’s a very common free open-source game engine). I must admit, my experience with the game engine before hand was quite limited, but I’ve gotten pretty good at using it. It really is a quite advanced engine, and you can do a lot of things with it, but damn, it can be a little fickle at times.

>Doing a full port is really quite interesting, but there’s a lot of work to do it. Like, a LOT of work. It’s a bit strange, since the original game engine wasn’t too bad for English text, but the company doesn’t have any staff available to support us since they’re all busy working on their new title, so porting seemed the best option in order to make the project feasible. Relying on the Japanese companies to do a lot of the technical work can be difficult sometimes since they often don’t have dedicated staff to handle our concerns (and often it wouldn’t be economical to do so). Doing things on our own gives us a bit of leeway and speeds up the process a lot. Anyways I’ve gotten kind of attached to the game, having put in so much time working on rebuilding it from the ground up. It’s a big undertaking, and I will probably write a bit about the process once they actually announce the title.

Few nukige have been often requested, those that have are euphoria (with another Clock Up game getting ready to come out, seem that they shouldn't need a port) and Black Cyc, which seemed to have engine troubles beyond what he seems to say here based on fan translators experience.

Besides that
> I’m not allowed to give it away, but it’s being given quite the treatment.
Seems to suggest something bigger than a random nukige

>so porting seemed the best option in order to make the project feasible.

As far as negotiations go, "we will give you some money for something you would never sell otherwise and you don't need to do anything at all" is a decent tool.

That said, it would likely be foolish for MG to pick it up, because of the long script for a relatively small audience. The main benefit though is working to expand that small but growing group who actually buys non nukige titles, but that likely could be done with less expensive work.

Only a couple months before MG announced they would censor it (they announced it in advance, hence the community backlash making the eventual release uncensored), JAST had release Family Project saying nothing was censored, and it turned out to have censorship after people had bought it. Keiichi just saved her from hyperthermia while she was in the bath (at that point so dazed she couldn't get out anymore). Due to pretty much her entire body burning she can't put on clothes as any kind of contact hurts like hell, so they go to the clinic with Satoko covering her privates with a towel.

By that point in the story, Satoko has become slightly crazy and paranoid, and Keiichi has become very suspicious due to his previous actions. On the way to the clinic, they come across a well (IIRC), and inside they find Rika's brutally dismembered body, chopped apart with something like an axe. Keiichi staggers backward and accidentally drops the newspaper that concealed the hatchet he was carrying to murder Satoko's uncle with. The already paranoid Satoko adds one plus one and determines Keiichi murdered Rika.

Keiichi ends up running and Satoko runs after him, dropping her towel. They end up at a bridge, with Satoko pushing Keiichi off, but Keiichi still managing to grab the edge. >>9992222 follows, where Satoko tries to make Keiichi fall off the ledge to his death, and she eventually succeeds.

If MG ever got Oretsuba, I would hope some good translator would join to keep it from being a train wreck.

That said, it probably wouldn't be bad if they got it, as they do have some decent translations, and because it's long and by a company who has released stuff here, no fan translator would likely pick it up. And it would surely beat their recent releases

>And it would surely beat their recent releases

The question is if it would sell good. Unfortunately, MGs customers consist mostly of Animetards who won't touch anything which hasn't an Anime adaptation and idiots who just want a quick fap. And they know it. Just look how 'well' their more story oriented games like Kara no Shoujo sell.

I would actually argue against Oretsuba, if only because MG is trending against doing games with large script sizes. Since the majority of their costs are probably directly related to to the amount of text there is (for translation, editing, script insertion and testing), I imagine they find it hard to justify doing a game with a 4mb script when they can do 4 games with 1mb scripts... especially considering they would probably have similar sales. It's the reason they aren't doing Shin Koihime, even though it'd be almost guaranteed to be their top seller.

Holy fuck you guys, how can you be positive and even help a guy who's fucking machine translating a VN? Once a work has been "translated", it will never get a real translation again*, and instead we're all left with a shitty bunch of text that makes no sense that we could as well have gotten out of AGTH + ATLAS ourselves. Is this really what the fanbase wants these days?

And it's in no way a fucking nukige. It's an above-average moege with VNDB and EGS scores above, say, Shuffle!, and roughly matching Da Capo 1/2's.

*In the entire history of VN translation, there have been 3 cases of a game being translated twice; the two Narcissu games had two well-known translators dual-translate it from the very start, and MG retranslated episode 1 of Higurashi as the fan translators were too slow to officially work with. Other than those three, not even machine translated works have been retranslated.

No one else wants to translate it, so I'm doing it alone without help. There was a project several years ago that died in the water.

The reason WHY no one re translates these is because no one wants to ever translate any of these at ALL. The people who want to translate VNs all work on the big names, I'm consulting actual translators from time to time anyway.

Do you understand? No matter how much you want it to be properly translated by a real translator, no one wants to do it unless you throw a lot of money at them.

I'm doing it by myself, if someone else wants to translate it it's not like I'm singlehandedly stopping them.

No, even if you compare high-profile badly translated games they don't get another chance. (Clannad comes to mind; though not machine-translated, it's very badly translated, but nobody's retranslated it despite it being one of the most acclaimed VNs of all time.)

The lines themselves might not be gibberish - they rarely are even in the case of an edited machine translation - but the story as a whole becomes gibberish.

To give a rough idea of how damaging machine translations are, I ran 16 lines of Remember11 through Google Translate, edited them to make sense, then compared them to the real translation: http://pastebin.com/yXYezcrC
The result is 10 lines being significantly mistranslated, and more importantly, the entire point of the scene being missed (which is a vital plot point), as the machine translation does not translate it correctly and context suggests it means something else than what it really means.

Reading only the "translated" text it may seem fine, but in practice you are completely butchering the original text when you're machine translating it.

Of course, many who rely on fan translations simply don't care about things such as writing style, the actual meaning of the sentences or expect any kind of quality whatsoever. Or they just don't know about the various translation mistakes because there is no one to point those out for them.

"However, perhaps......"
"The existence that is the present you may be a distinct personality that was recently born within Yukidoh-kun".
"If you think as such, it may explain why you have no memory of the past?"
"The fragmentarily remembered parts, is that perhaps because those are directly linked to Yukidoh-kun?"
"It was one and a half hours ago when you woke up in this sphere, right?"

Almost all machine translations are equally gibberish. I would perhaps understand if the person translating used Trans Agg *exclusively* with tools like Rikaichan or JParser to check kanji / word meanings and pronounciations (more similar to using an actual dictionary rather than relying on a full blown translator) but even then they should carefully reconsider if they have to apply the tools for every second sentence.

Not necessarily knowing the meaning of 瑞穂の国 or 大八洲 should still be fine but if the person translating can't handle normal, "everyday" words without outside help then you've got a big problem.

That's more a case that speaks for how people commonly don't want to re-translate an already "translated" work.

That MG translated episode 1 on their own has more to do with how the fantranslators aren't affiliated with MG.
And the fantranslators dropped their project afterwords as MG were so much faster than them and how everyone read and were done with it before they even got a chance to release their own version.

And it was dropped, despite the fantranslation being the better translation.

Maybe you're too young for this, but a few years back it was common for there to be speedsubs of anime episodes and better subs. Speedsubs were out within a day or two and full of errors, bad grammar, etc. Regular subs took upward of a week, sometimes longer but were much higher quality.
