I don't think Japan's tendency toward proprietary software is anything unusual. Though I'm still blindsided by how lax they are with standards. Most every online DL store I've used has relied on some pointless ActiveX control downloader that silently fails in Firefox without telling you what is going on.

I used to think the conversations about Japanese websites being stuck in the 90s were just stylistic complaints, but it seems like they lag a decade behind on everything.

I can approve of one thread in which Japanese can be used but not in every thread or the comunication will become a mess.

I wouldn't mind if it was the good part of the 90s. Clean HTML 4.0/4.01, for example. But instead we get spacer GIFs, Java applets, Flash, and websites made entirely out of tables or images. I seriously don't give a fuck about the "semantic web" or "content over presentation" or whatever. If I see a website and it looks fine but it's poorly put together, I don't care (Hacker News is a good example, half the hipsters there would have a fit if they checked its source). Unfortunately, the Japanese web is outdated, poorly designed, and an eyesore to look at.

Someone needs to launch some proper Japanese documentation on how to write HTML and CSS. There's already a W3C/HTML5 Japanese Interest Group:

Maybe you're being sarcastic but I think those are actually fairly decent designs, if only because they're more text-driven rather than having images and shit all over the place.

Vista was perceived as terrible because 1.) it wasn't resource efficient like 7, so it required better hardware to run, and 2.) it wasn't sold with better hardware [on prebuilt computers in stores]. So people ended up with something that ran like shit.

Pentium 4 3.00 GHz, 1024 MB RAM, GeForce 6800 GS here. You are lying. I've disabled all services and I'm using the classic theme with no animations or extras, it's slow as fuck. Just poking around the operating system's applications is unresponsive and time consuming compared to Windows XP.

Fortunately, Debian runs like a charm.

Because an "s" in many situations denotes that something is plural. If you're talking about a singular thing running, you use the "s," but if it is a plurality of things running, you don't use the "s." It's backwards from what you would expect logically.

In the early days of the printing press, the letter "s" was the most likely to get caught, so they had to balance out the number of "s"es (this is also why the long "s", "ſ", was created).
The idea was you had an "s" quota, and one of the solutions was to balance out the number of "s"es that you used. So you could have, "The dog runs," or, "The dogs run," but never, "The dogs runs," because that would cause the machine to get stuck.
