That aside, MM themselves were great, would have been even better if they'd all been able to make it though. There's a fair few, yeah. Berryz Koubou also came this Summer and they did a proper concert in 2010 too. There's actually been at least one H!P act perform each year since 2008. Some of it might be down to a large Japanese population here however and a few people seem to come from places like Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia for these events too.
As for other Japanese related stuff, I don't really know. Japanese book stores tend to stock a lot of visual kei or anime related stuff so it's probably the same as anywhere else.

Regarding Black Variety, this was most likely how they were told to act, and the show appeared to be planned (to a point) to go with their intended characters. The letter, for example, I think I read somewhere that it was written by the show's staff.

If they suck at doing the whole bratty-yet-cute persona thing and go overboard is an entirely different matter.

Anyway, when it comes to "characters", the one who's done anything relevant and with a degree of success so far seems to be...Ikuta. She (and UFA) sure as hell managed to squeeze a lot out of her wota thing with a special DVD, the color change and recently Gaki's birthday event. But Ikuta will have to move on from that, eventually.

As a whole, the 9/10th gens are still vastly unexplored as idols outside of just dancing and singing (not like they excel at this too). It makes me realize how important H!M, and Utaban's, role was on building certain characters and connecting the girls with the fans. At least those shows seemed to have writers and producers who knew what they were doing.

It's okay, though, they can just go plant potatoes or whatever the fuck they do on that new show.

I'm guessing it's the members and songs. Gen 1-4 was so loveable because they actually had shining personality, whereas the recent generation are boring in comparison. The songs used to be bright and happy, now they're going through a big auto tuned phase.
