Do cigarettes actually induce a pleasant state of mind and promote calm feelings or is it just that people who are addicted to tobacco feel relieved when they are able to smoke and scratch that itch?

For example, I've seen people who are addicted to something as trivial as coca-cola. I can drink some soda and it's nothing more than a tasty beverage to me, but they're craving that caffeine so much that they're irritable and frustrated and then it's like a little slice of heaven to them when they can drink some soda and scratch that itch.

I've smoked tobacco once before, but I felt nothing. I don't really understand the appeal. If someone is stressed then isn't it preferable to use one of the substances that have a more noticeable effect? Alcohol, sedatives, opiates, marijuana. All of them produce a very noticeable feeling of calmness and relieve stress.

I have no problem with tobacco, but I'm just genuinely curious and I wish I understood the appeal. Could anyone help explain it to me?

It actually depends on how much time have you been smoking. I cant stand a day without at least smoking 10 cigarettes. I feel relieved when I finally get a chance to smoke, or after a very stressing situation.

I didn't smoke nearly as much as other people, but while I was in university it just felt fucking awesome to end my day with a cigarette. Either that or while writing a paper or something, I'd have a few through the day during breaks just to kinda keep be grounded, rather than getting to stressed out.

I think the appeal is that cigarettes are a very practical drug. It reduces the stress without impeding your ability to do tasks. If the sole purpose was to feel calm then everyone would skip right over cigarettes and just pop pain killers or benzos and drink liquor or smoke weed, but they need to feel calm while continuing to do their jobs as efficiently as possible so feeling tipsy/drunk or high isn't ideal in this situation.

Yeah mostly this, its to get some sort of effect while not interfering drastically with your schedule. Same reason prescription stimulants are used by university students, just on a much larger scale.

Same story here anon. I'd have like one or two a day just out of habit. It didn't really do anything to me. Now that I'm home I haven't had a cigarette in about a year. I don't think it's very addictive.

Yeah, but the question was is it the cigarettes having an effect, or just them returning you to your normal state because the withdrawals are making you stressed?

I'd imagine this is near impossible for smokers to answer unbiased.

>Do cigarettes actually induce a pleasant state of mind and promote calm feelings or is it just that people who are addicted to tobacco feel relieved when they are able to smoke and scratch that itch?

Well, I usually get a nicotine rush from the first cigarette of the day, too which I drink a good strong cup of Swedish coffee (no sugar, no milk, darker than black). A good substitute for breakfast if you want to take it easy. Then during the day I use snus instead of cigarettes because it's a hassle to go outside to smoke. The snus gives a slower, more substantial rush and also have a nice taste of fresh pine and bergamot.

Well, monotony makes stuff boring, so I usually switch around what I ingest to relax. Also, I don't enjoy alcohol, it makes me rude and sluggish. Marijuana on the other hand is fun once in a while, but can get boring very easily if you abuse it.

Why are friendly drugs falling out of use?

So many people are taking drugs today that give out a lot of bad vibes. Many college students are opting to take stimulants instead of smoking marijuana and psychedelics are barely used by any young people.

Alcohol brings out the worst in people, people who are craving cigarettes can be very angry, and speed is such a mean and aggressive drug. It practically oozes with bad vibes and argumentative aggression. There is no love when you're taking speed, it just pumps up your ego and reduces your ability to feel empathy.

People need to get back to the love. Marijuana, psychedelics, these are the drugs that show you how to care about other people and love one another.

Well I didn't smoke all to much, like I said one or two a day, and now I don't smoke at all, and haven't in close to a year. I still think it was pretty relaxing, just mellows you out a bit. I stopped smoking altogether cause I wasn't fond of the lingering smell on my clothes, which kinda beat out the relaxation. For me I'd equate it to the same relaxation I get out of a perfect cup of green tea after a stressful day.

I guess its a to each their own kind of thing, some people enjoy it, some don't I guess.

This is something I've wondered as well, and I can confirm there's some rush in it. The thing is, for the first few cigarettes, you're very unlikely to be doing it properly.

As for bias, I'm asthmatic and I think smoking is retarded, but unfortunately I'm even more retarded when drunk.
Drunken me thinks smoking is a great way to break the ice with people, which I suppose is true; though, he also thinks going outside and socializing is a good idea, so whatever.
