I watched a documentary on this a while ago called the bridge. So many people commit suicide off it, so often, that all they had to do was camp out there for a few months, and got footage of tons of people jumping. Actually made me cry watching the whole thing.

I really like bridges that cross borders. There's something really awesome about human ingenuity removing barriers between people that have been in place for millennia and bringing them closer together.

However, the romance fades a bit when you realize they charge toll fees about as high as what you'd pay for a fare to cross the same distance.

They are in the process of erecting a suicide barrier on the main bridge here.
Actually, they might have finished it, I'm not sure because I never cross it.
Does the Golden Gate have a barrier?

>> No.9896952

They are talking about it, but people are against it because it will "ruin the aesthetics". I say let people kill themselves off the bridge.

There aren't many bridges around Phoenix. If you want to call it a bridge, the one on the right is for the light rail. The two on the left are for cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians. One runs northbound and the other southbound.

I want to ride that light rail one day. It's the closest thing to a train I have here.

>> No.9896994

>>9896952

Yeah, I agree with that.
They say "we have prevented [some number] of suicides" when talking about these things, but so many of those will be people who then just shot or hung themselves instead.
I can understand the train barrier doors like what they have in Paris because one suicide can hold up an entire train line. The cost-benefit ratio just isn't favourable with bridge barriers though, where there are multiple lanes and the traffic won't be stopped.
For the bridge I posted aesthetics aren't a problem, because it wasn't aesthetically pleasing to begin with.

>> No.9897005

>>9896994
"A study review conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States found that nine out of 10 people who are unsuccessful in committing suicide never try again, suggesting that it is usually an impulsive act."

At the very least something like this would cause these impulsive individuals from killing themselves. I think the major factor here would be how to add that much weight onto a suspension bridge without causing some sort of structural issue.

>> No.9897026

>>9897005

The weight consideration is an interesting one. I assume that if they find the weight to be outside tolerable limits they add more steel suspension cables, as I assume the limiting factor is the cables and not the pylons, etc.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Well, technically it's two bridges but they're both commonly referred to as the Bay Bridge. Kind of scary to go over, especially when it's windy. Heard a few stories about people jumping off it too.

>> No.9897033

>> No.9897042

>cost-benefit
I actually wonder how much it costs to have the coast guard, police divers or whatever mount a search and try to fish out dead bodies from around the Golden Gate Bridge almost every week. Not to mention the highway patrols that sit around there watching. Probably much cheaper than putting up nets everywhere I'm guessing.

The West Gate concrete barrier apparently cost $20,000,000AU to give you some indication. I don't think a barrier is worth the expense.

>> No.9897509

"There is a plan to install steel nets on the Golden Gate to prevent suicides, but the $45-million US in funding the project has not materialized."

I got that from an article about installing suicide nets on the lion's gate bridge in vancouver, so not exactly the best source, but they must have pulled that stat from somewhere.
