Yeah, they cap out after a 999 retries. During my SFN-shenanigans I was forced to play on three different score.dat files, so the statistics here don't show every attempt. I have something over 10,000 retries on the card, which is kind of sad. Life wasted, for some people. My life was already wasted so I didn't mind.

You shouldn't be searching for fun in STGs. Just like all semi-competitive and competitive games, you're only supposed to play to get good and to wave your dick and make other players feel like shit. Your motivation should be all of the attention whoring, cock sucking and ego boosting that you will get when you reach #pofv skill tier material. Ahh, I can imagine myself now, circlejerking on #pofv with the likes of T, asp and Naut and then gathering them up to call other players shitty and spam :V every comment on /jp/ and laugh at other bad players. This fact has been motivating me for years.

I just finished all my normal 1ccs but SA and started to practice Ran.
Why is charming siege considered a hard spellcard? It's about as hard or a little harder than devil's recitation normal imo.
I have like 15/20 record on it, much better than princess tenko or the banquet of doom and death, which I just don't understand, is it supposed to be just very hard pure dodging and reading?

Just move away from where she teleports to, in a triangle pattern. It's pretty easy.

>banquet
If you mean Ran's second spellcard (#120) then hang out in the bottom-right corner during certain parts, it will be clear when.

Also most of Yukari's equivalent spellcards are easier, including those three. But the stage is a lot harder.

/jp/, I want your advice with jp-shmup. It seemed to go well in the stream, although there were a few strange bugs that weren't present before that I need to iron out. I'll be making sure to fix them shortly. I have a few changes that I've been meaning to change, but I'm not sure if they are good. First of all, I am thinking about removing the frame and making it look more like this: http://youtu.be/85bE4NlzrLE?t=34s

I did the math, and it turned out that the frame used 44% of the window. That's so much space that I could use for bullet-dodging action. One problem with this is that I wouldn't have any place to put UI elements such as the player's power or the score. I might have to embed them straight into the the game or put them right over the bullets. I don't like the idea of the player being able to touch the statistics while being in the game. Maybe this is a small complaint since it seems to work fine in other games, like ones by Cave. Another problem coming from this is that the window wouldn't be vertical anymore. It would be what we like to call a "vertizontal" shmup, since it would be vertically-oriented but wider than it is long. I could also make it more like the shooting games, or GFW, which would be a space in between.

Another thing I've been thinking about doing is changing the native resolution from 640x480 to twice that, which is 1280x960. This would allow me to have finer control of the graphics and some gameplay elements. The downside to this is that it would be detremental to performance and the higher resolution would prevent higher refresh rates on CRT's. Depending on my mood, I like to switch between 60, 85, and 120 hz on my CRT when playing Touhou. I would be stuck on 60hz with that kind of resolution, and I'd have to get a new CRT or modify my drivers to change it, which doesn't sound very convenient.

Also, I suggest leaving the resolution at 640 x 480 naturally, just give the player the choice to have a upscaled 1280 x 960 res in windowed mode. You shouldn't be caring about graphics at this point, and if you decide to change the resolution later on, it should be simple enough to do.

I actually like having more bullets. I'm a little crazy like that. I can't get enough bullets... huhu. That's part of why I'm making this game. I need to satisfy my bullet craving.
>Also, I suggest leaving the resolution at 640 x 480 naturally, just give the player the choice to have a upscaled 1280 x 960 res in windowed mode.
I will probably the option between fullscreen and windowed.
>You shouldn't be caring about graphics at this point, and if you decide to change the resolution later on, it should be simple enough to do.
The engine is very close to being done, so I want to start focusing on graphics. Also, I don't know how changing the resolution would be simple. It would involve having to change all the sprites, move the UI items, rearrange the menus, changing the gameplay area with the border that holds the player in and culls the bullets, and having to rescript all of the stages and bullet patterns.
>Wow, my LCD's manage 120hz at 1920 x 1080, and I always though that CRT's were superior.
I think that it works a little differently between the two kinds of monitory. Even on 120hz with an LCD, you still have ghosting and you still can't change the native resolution on the fly. Also, I paid three dollars for this monitor, yours probably cost a fortune.

I used to play fighting games primarily while casually playing shmups on the side, but around a year ago I reversed that. I think [good] fighting game players can start learning shmups quickly because both genres require a similar mindset. Fighting games also take a LOT longer to become competitive at, so making progress faster in shmups can add to the appeal.

If you find yourself having to do that from simply changing the resolution, then you're probably programming it in the hard and unintuitive way. With DirectX and OpenGL libraries, it should be possible to implement those things in a generic way, so that you don't have to hard-code all of those things in your code making them resolution dependent. Unless you intend to make it so that the resolution affects the size of your play field and all, and not just how big everything looks. Speaking of which, are you using DirectX or OpenGL? Ne, Riz, do you have any experience in programming AI? The custom AI for IaMP and Hisouten makes me want to create one for PoFV or Melty, but I'd have no idea where to start.

I know it's kind of off topic, but that doesn't really matter. And yes, I know that making an AI for PoFV that doesn't cheat is probably next to impossible.

Also, download the emulator and the games if you aren't using T-98 Next:

Nope. The interesting thing about the IaMP custom AI is that it gradually learns as you play it more and more, making something like that for a bullet hell would be damn near impossible. But it'd be a fun little challenge to do. I can do simple stuff, but hell if I know what I'm doing as far as AI goes.

I tried a long time ago when one of the very first versions of SWR came out, but it never really went anywhere due to lack of knowledge.

I think that the AI for the fighting games would be a little more complicated. There are more things to learn in IaMP than PoFV.

Finally cleared UFO normal with ReimuA.
It became a lot easier once I stopped caring too much about the UFOs.
Like MoF, SA and TD, I 1cc the game at the same time that I beat the final boss for the first time because I need more than 3 lives for that.
Lost my first life against Kogasa (most difficult stage 2 boss imo) and used 9 bombs on Byakuren alone (and 4 lives lost).

And with that, I have cleared in normal with one character all the games I wanted. Took me roughly two months (started during comiket when someone made a thread for the anniversary of the games).
My difficulty ranking would be:
MoF <<< TD < IN < EoSD < PCB < UFO <<< SA
I'd say that 6, 7 and 8 are pretty much the same but I enjoyed 7 less than 6 and 8 and no idea how long it took to beat 6.

I can now take it easy and try to beat an extra stage/replay everything in hard.

Hm, I suppose you're right. PoFV and IaMP both are fairly difficult games to program an AI for though. Both have random elements, so you have to factor in a bunch of different things. For IaMP, you need to program them to react to all of the things that a player can do. They'll need to punish accordingly, know when to use certain moves and so on. PoFV, you'd need to program them to react to some random things as well. I think the hardest part of programming a fighting game AI is actually making them competent, as in, knowing what to do in different matchups, rather than just randomly flailing about throwing out bullets.

And yes, I considered making a game myself. I'm just terrible at making graphics and game design in general. I've had much more fun making mods and whatnot.

I decided to try this game since everybody seems to praise it for being so deep and hardcore.

It was kind of fun, but too bad! I'm shitty at STGs. I died with bombs in stock twice on Stage 1-4, and once with a hyper at Stage 1-5 boss... Game Over when he was at about 60% health. >I can get past it if I spam bombs and even captured if a few times but still haven't figured out the way to get past it consistently.
It's hard to explain. You just need to practice it more. You should also watch some replays, including mine.
>>9888711
It's statically aimed and damage-based. If you do it the same way every time, which is extremely difficult, it will be the exact same every time. While it won't be the exact same every time, you can memorize a lot of it so that you know what to do in tight spots.
