Hopefully this is suitably niche:
What are some good Japanese games that only ever received a fan translation?

I just finished playing Hourai Gakuen no Bouken! and it was great.

That feel when the first real Otaku Culture thread made today that wasn't a blog entry goes straight to page 10 without a single contributing reply.

It's a feel I know all too well, original poster.

Have some bumps.

By the way, Mother 3 is an obvious one that comes to mind. Also one of the Dragon Quest games for the SNES.

You know why this list has a gap between the years 1999 and 2009? Because it's makers were all born mid-nineties and decided to list old rpg's everyone has heard of along with hipster ones together just so they could then make a statement about their first rpg's, played during the 4chan era. Bonus points for le rage face.

wait, Dragon Quest isn't the first JRPG?

>> No.9778742

>>9778010
Nope. Dragon Quest introduced the JRPG turn-based combat system and random encounters. Before that you still had a town with an Inn/Item Shop/Weapon Shop/Armor Shop, you still had equipment, items and magic, and you still had the experience system, but you saw the monsters walk around outside of town and mindlessly bashed them with your sword until they were dead, at which point you got extra experience.
It doesn't sound bad, but it was very primitive, and DQ's much more strategic system was a huge improvement over the pre-DQ games I've played. Then again, my experiences with pre-DQ JRPGs is very limited.

Yes, they continued making pre-DQ-style JRPGs for a while after the release of Dragon Quest. By the 90s they'd become nonexistent, though.

>> No.9778779

That's an aspect I loved about DQ1 (though I never got very far because in general it isn't very interesting if you're used to more modern RPGs): the game doesn't give any 'you shouldn't go here yet!' bullshit. It lets you access any area you want to go to, but you'll be stomped to death if you go into a high-level area too early. You're not supposed to go there yet.

>> No.9786848

>>9785297
It's both railroading, actually. One is railroading by force (you can't go in here!!), the other is railroading by making all other options impossible (sure you can go here, but everything will one-hit KO you). Still, I much prefer the latter option as it allows you to reach 'too difficult' areas sooner than you normally could as long as you're good enough to survive there. In heavily stat-based games like DQ you'll still need the numbers to back up your skill, but in more skill-based games it allows you to do awesome things. I recall slaying a Troll with a bow in Gothic 1 or 2 at a time when they could kill me in one hit. Things like that are always awesome.
