It was. It was a cultural and scientific powerhouse. Under Bolshevik leadership the country was turned from a backwards serfdom into a spacefaring superpower. Soviet healthcare and education was excellent too. The new "free" Russia still has a much lower average life expectancy than it did just decades earlier.
