So my friend says that Gradius V is harder than any Touhou game on any difficulty.
Imho, any game that uses a joystick instead of a keyboard or pad can't be nearly as tough.

Who's right, /jp/?

Gradius 5 isn't that hard....
IT may be made by Cave, but it's got nothing on Touhou

Your imaginary friend is correct.

They belong to different subsets of the shmup genre. Touhou games focus entirely on the bullet curtain aspect, whereas the Gradius games involve environmental interaction, and have less bullets, though all the bullets are much faster. IMO, you shouldn't compare the difficulty of the two except in broadly general terms, since they require different skills.

They're different styles of shooter.

The funny thing is that the Vic Viper has the same size hitbox as Reimu.

I breeze through the Touhou games on lunatic mode, but I think I put 30-40 hours into Gradius 5.

So yeah, different shootan'.

Not having bombs can make Gradius V very hard if you're too used to having a panic button. The dodging itself is easier than Touhou, most definitely, but there's also terrain to look out for.

That said, it took me much less time to 1cc Gradius V than it did for Lunatic EoSD.

Terrain's never that big an issue, though, except for the requisite side-scrolling RACE QUICKLY THROUGH A TINY TUNNEL section.

It's pathetic that most people here don't even know the two schools of shmups.

Mechanical: low bullet rate, faster bullets, larger hitbox, environmental hazards, more about memorization than skill.

Manic: many bullets, smaller hitbox, more grazing and maneuvering, usually no outside interferences, focus on bosses, more about reflexes

Not really; when that happens, it becomes either stale or too contrastive.

This is the very essence of the genre.

>> No.976536

Manic shooters aren't about reflexes really... navigating dense bullet fields requires spatial awareness and just a load of concentration more than anything.

Gradius games don't have bombs in the traditional sense - limited-use items that clear the screen of all bullets/enemies.

R-Type can be classified as mechanical, in a way that large portions of the environment dart out and kill you.

Not quite, the hardest games in the genre use an arcade stick.

While we're at it, Gradius 5 uses a joypad and was not made by Cave. Memorization is a skill, and most arcade shmups contain flinch, or flinch sections.
