When I was in Tokyo a couple years ago there was this crazy show I watched in my hotel room about this elementary school girl who basically got shit on by life all the time. Every time it seemed like something bad would happen to her, so she'd try to get revenge in someway, then things would work out, but in the end something else would go bad, usually due to her trying to get revenge. Her parents seemed to ignore her and her older sister didn't like her too much. Her grandfather lived with her, too, and he seemed like the only one who actually cared for the main character.

It was hilarious to see all the bad shit happen to her, but at the same time, it was incredibly sad.

I used to remember the name, but now for the life of me I can't recall the title.

If I could remember the name I'd tell you. That show and "Attention Please" were pretty much the only shows that I found that were watchable when I was in my hotel.

"Attention Please" was a hilarious show about a girl who was in a punk band who tries to become a stewardess to impress the guy she likes, who also used to be in the band, but left to become a salaryman.

Sounds almost like the Manga 'Life', except...a comedy, apparently.

My japanese is pretty bad, I only saw a couple episodes and it's been a few years. I totally had forgotten about the grandmother, too, for instance.

I watched it as a kid and I still remember that it was more of a Shin-Chan-like cartoon rather than a 'everyone hates Maruko'-show.
It's a little like the Yotsuba& mango,except it's different.

It just seemed to me that a lot of the humor was focused around all the shit that happened to Maruko. It made it seem kinda sad to me. (I watched the live-action version, by the way, if that wasn't clear. It wasn't until this thread that I looked and found out about the animated show)

Shin-chan is similar, but I understood that he was being a real dick as well. I guess I just missed that with Maruko.
