The predecessor to Nanoha was a visual novel called Triangle Heart, which featured a foxgirl maid that was the prototype for Arf from Nanoha. Masaki Tsuzuki put several animal people in Nanoha including Yuuno (ferret), Arf (dog), Zafira (wolf), and the twins from A's (catgirls).

In 2006, while Masaki still worked at a visual novel company named Ivory, Masaki created a visual novel called Wanko to Kurasao. This is the novel which has the orange haired doggirl Mikan in it that /a/ loves so much, along with many other kemonomimi characters.

Masaki started catching flak from fans because he wrote the kemonomimi characters out of the Nanoha storylines.

Masaki after 3 seasons of Nanoha (2 with 13 episodes, 1 with 26) and a movie, decided to work on a new anime. This time it was going to be an all new world. He decided that this new world would be based around his favorite types of characters, kemonomimis. Masaki also used Mikan from Wanko to Kurasou as a prototype for Ricotta.

Dog Days is the culmination of years and years of Masaki putting kemonomimis in his works until he could finally be considered successful enough to just go ahead and do a complete series that he wanted to do because it made him feel warm and fuzzy and had nothing but the types of characters that he finds the cutest.
