it seems like the best way to learn a new language is to completely immerse yourself in a new country and culture as a young child, you'd pick it up amazingly fast, this is how I learned my 2nd language

I've "lived" in Kyoto for 2 months total (aka living in someone's apartment several times adding up to 2 months) and I'm moving semi-permanently (at least for 2 years) next month.

I find it hilarious that I make 3-5 times greater than my Japanese counterparts within a close age range of 5 years working in their respective Japanese pharmaceutical companies. Even more hilarious are the low balling offers that some of these companies throw out to persuade me to join them. When I was in high school, I had a friend who was a year below me go to a Japanese Exchange Student thing. He talked to the Japanese embassy about it, and they told him he needed to know English or Japanese (our main language is Spanish), and that he had to go to a test. If he passed the test, they would give him $2.000 a MONTH, APART from a room and intensive Japanese lessons. They would be giving him around $3.000 a month at 15 years.
Around two-hundred people applied for the test and none of them got past 6/10, he scored a 4.7/10, but a friend from the embassy told us "if you push really hard, they can give you a chance". He started and started pushing the people about how much he wanted to go and eventually after a load of things, he went.
Then, two years later, he said it was oblivion. Maybe because where he came from, but he said that people there are insanely robotic, monotone and they have fun with the slightest thing in the world, and I have to point out, he was catastrophically dull in our country. He says that there was not a single one classmate that was past 5/10, food was expensive and that school was very, very hard. He said that the only thing that made it worth it is that there simply is no crime at all on the streets, and that it is pretty nice to walk around alone, specially at night, because the scenery is gorgeous.

I guess it depend for who you work and which activity sector.

I work in the video game industry, my company is Japanese (and big). JP employees get paid twice what we earn in Europe in average. (Can very from 1.5x to 2.5x+ depending on the position.)

They have their transportation fees fully covered by the company as well while we don't. Sure we have more paid holidays in here and our working hours are lower, but we get a shitty annual bonus compared to JP who can easily get a full month of salary bonus.

The only advantage we really have is that most of our contracts are permanent, while gaijins at the JP office mostly have temporary based contracts.

I live in Tokyo and go to Japanese language school. I came here to avoid my past. It's okay here as long as you can get used to European style nanny-state behavior and no one ever questioning The Rules. If you can eliminate any sense of self esteem or pride you might survive. It's incredibly safe crime wise, though quakes and eruptions and tsunamis always get mention in the news since 3/11. Everything is crowded and loud. If you need to make a decision involving government get ready to wait weeks or more. If you can speak english fluently you might be able to get a shitty job teaching students who will never get better no matter what. It's got it's pros and cons. I probably won't stay more than 5 years just because I want a family and I would NEVER subject a child to growing up in Japan. I want them to be happy.

You could just simply sit on an index that will gain and not do anything. If you feel the money is excessive, donate it. Buy some shell corporations and hire the unemployed.

I love Japan, but HATE the base. My job fucking sucks. The people I work with are assholes, they are all Filipino with horrible manners. The pay is shit too because I get paid in USD, and it is 78yen=$1. I can't leave my job because they decide if and when I can quit, even though I'm a civilian.

In a lot of ways it kind of sucks.

I already travel as much as I want (though it's mostly a chore) and I buy as much as I want and I still can't use all of my money. Health bills are free (because NHS) and retirement contributions get taken out of paychecks before I get them anyway.

I live in Tokyo, close to Akihabara. I go to college here, I'm a Junior right now and I came as a Freshman.

Japan is a really cool country. Tokyo is super convenient. Plus you can easily acquire all your /jp/ goods and go to Comiket every year twice. Japanese drinking parties are fun and Japanese girls are really cute.

Honestly Japan is a great place. However, if you can't speak Japanese you will be forced to stick around your gaijin bubble. You will have the same boring gaijin friends and never get to interact with most people unless you learn the language. As a gaijin you will automatically stand out which is a good and bad thing. It makes it easy to get to know people but it is also easy to be lumped together with foreigner stereotypes or misunderstood.
