Aside from the obvious tips of practicing a lot and studying from reference, i feel perhaps the most overlooked thing would be to make sure you're having fun.

This isn't to say you should not find it hard or struggle, but that you should enjoy it, with all the hardships involved. Don't be deterred by failures or feel put down because you're not as good as you want to be.

Just keep drawing, persistence and perseverance are greatly overlooked with everyone wanting to be the best overnight.

Tips for SAI? It depends on what you're looking for, are you asking about technical help for the tool, or something else?

SAI is a fairly lightweight drawing tool, and it's very easy to pick up, and straight forward to use which is why so many people prefer it.

I won't get into which drawing program is best, because I feel like such a thing doesn't exist, but what I will say is, don't learn the program, learn how to draw.

A good artist will be able to pick up any tool and still draw well, be that openCanvas, tegaki or Photoshop.

One thing that I should note is that with SAI, it is incredibly easy to rotate and flip the canvas, both are useful for drawing. For me personally, I felt over time that I began to "abuse" these, in the sense that I done them so often I stopped drawing "normally" and relied so heavily upon rotating and zooming in.

It shouldn't be too big of a problem if you're just starting out so maybe it's not something you need to consider, but when possible try to avoid zooming and rotating, and just draw straight on the canvas.

SAI is ultimately a very intuitive tool to use, and you should have no issues picking it up, as it doesn't have too many "tricks" that you can learn, making it quite straightforward.

I hope that helped a bit, if you were wondering about anything more specific let me know.

It looks more like a river flowing at the base of a mountain at first glance. But after a bit of looking, it sort of does look like a path. I'd suggest a bit more detail to make that evident though. Like logs, or stones on the path.

You should try making the path irregular, instad of a line, make it a wider or thinner line. This is an effect mountain paths get in real life due to trees not being symmetrical on both sides of the trail.
Whenever you draw landscape try to imagine yourself in the landscape, it will help you notice abotu a lot of little details that are quite important.

Most of the environments in my mind start out as a vague impression. I have a "feel" for some of the colors that are present, the lighting, how expansive it is, miscellaneous features that exist somewhere in the space.. but translating that into concrete imagery is difficult. I still remember the first time I felt I had drawn something that would convey the same atmosphere that existed inside my mind. The artistic quality of the drawing left a lot to be desired, but I was still really excited.

Being lazy, I generally just wait for the environments to develop themselves. If I come back and chew on them every few months, things seem to fall into place OK. It also lets me avoid feeling like I am forcing anything... but it is not that helpful if you are actually trying to produce something.

The two things I really struggle with (no matter how long I leave them to stew for) are:
- Defining the overall ... geography of a space. Like where features actually are relative to each other, rather than just how far away they look from x or y angle (because if I leave it up to the latter I tend to run into inconsistencies).
- Details like whether the ground is sand, dust or hard-packed earth. I'll know something like "it is brown and dusty" but won't be able to proceed to any further detail.

I'm reading a book about this called Drawing with the right side of the brain. there's this so called "tyranny of the symbol"- our mind associates every concept we know with generic, simple images, and our hands will draw them instinctively even when we try to draw something else. There are a lot of interesting exercises in that book on how to draw without activating this mental mechanism. I haven't finished it yet but it's really helpful, I had tried to draw that mountain path before and it turned out much worse.

Weeks ago some anon posted a small guide on how to color in MS Paint... I tried it this afternoon, but I'm stuck in the second step. It says to use the fill tool to get rid of the original sketch, but there's this fuzzy white outline that I can't get rid of. Please help.

I am having a go at anatomy but I just don't feel like I'm doing a good job. I think the bodies I draw are way too wide.

A relative of mine went through a DA phase... she moved away a few weeks ago, and left a very old tablet behind. I don't draw, but I tried it out. Holy shit how do people draw with these things? It's uncontrollable.

Cursor only shows up when the pen is hovering half a centimeter over the left side of the tablet.
There's a button on the pen but it doesn't seem to do anything special. It just makes the cursor reappear when it goes poof (which happens often)
Pressing the tip of the pen against the surface of the tablet equals pressing M1. Which makes planning a drawing very difficult.
There doesn't seem to be any pressure sensitivity. Usually in pictures drawn with tablets, you can see that the lines are thinner on one end and fatter on the other. Every point in the lines drawn with this thing is equally thick. I tried it on SAI paint tool and photoshop.

I couldn't even draw a circle. But I can do that just fine on paper. Is this tablet working normally?

a tip concerning slender females: proportion is important. REALLY important.
what you're doing wrong is:
-the ribcage needs to be thinner at the top. to help you imagine it draw a triangle (the ribcage) leading to the neck and then try to draw the shoulders wwider than you should. just to get the feeling.

-the butt can be larger. you think that the butt decides what defines slenderness but it actually doesn't. what defines slenderness is the waist and the area above the breast. so you can draw a wider butt. at least wider than what you did.

it's always better to look at anatomy to get the crucial details but if you just mind what i said above it will probably help enough for now.

Right now i'm doing a cover of "Tale as old as time" with Oliver for the Galaco contest that got extended.(I couldn't enter before as they didn't allow Oliver till the extention and I didn't have money to buy him)

The contest is almost over I think (At the end of this month or next month) but all you need to do is get 1000 views on your video with a certain tag locked and you win Galaco a limited edition Vocaloid.

These threads always make me depressed, I've been practicing for months and try and produce drawings every day spending all of my nights, but it looks so shit compared to the good artists in this thread.

Yes, I'm reading loomis and some other anatomy books and I do figure drawing every day but it just fucking sucks. I always thought 'some people are just talented' was bullshit but there must be a segment of truth in that.

Anatomy is hard.
I've been reading Loomis' Figure Drawing for All its Worth, but I've been dead stuck on drawing just the skeleton.
The part that confuses the living daylights out of me is the pelvis. I can barely draw it in frontal view; you can just imagine how it fucks me over at any other angle. Especially that bone that sticks out from the discs, bends at some weird as hell angle, etc.
I've been practicing every day, but I seem to be making the same mistakes and I don't know how to fix them.
Sorry if this is really basic and/or obvious, but I need help. ;_;

Of course there is a segment of truth in it. It just doesn't mean much against practise. Some grasp the necessary skills in a short amount of time and some take way longer.
You should try to do some different things if you don't seem to make any progress, for example some exercises from drawing on the right side of the brain (keep in mind that this book is infamous for it's pseudoscience, but the exercises are good for beginners). Also try to render things in simple 3d shapes when drawing them. I think that to many people all that "learn figure drawing/anatomy" comes way to soon. Reading about design and composition also helps. Also, drawing is not one skill, it is a combination of many skills that makes someone a good artist.
I hope that my advice will be helpfull to you and that my sentences makes sense, since I'm very tired right now and to lazy to reread every sentence.

that's not the pelvis bone, it is a placeholder to make it easier. You can look on other figure drawing books to see how other artist do it. Michael Hampton - Figure Drawing - Design and Invention seems to be good. Also your torso looks weird to, the hallow part is supposed to be the simple ripcage while the breast on it is, well, the breastmuscle. Look at some pictures of skeletons, the ripcage is way rounder, almost like an eggshape.
