I've always kind of wanted to try an MMO, but everyone always makes them sound so awful, and I'm not the kind of person to play with others in a particularly interactive capacity. Classes are largely badly designed. None of them feel unique or interesting or cool.

Renown Quests can be better, they're very mundane.

Dynamic events could be way better.

WvWvW is sloppy and poorly implemented, ranged classes with aoes dominate as usual. There will literally never be an mmo with world pvp that has a bunch of melee classes duking it out in a field. It's always just everybody standing back and everybody firing off aoes. The only action melee classes get is picking off retards on the sidelines, something ranged classes do even better.

Dodge is a boring mechanic. Combat is actually pretty lame. The only thing remotely interesting is the false hitbox they have going on where your abilities fire homed to your target but in a line, so it hits anything in the way before your real target, if applicable. This means there's LoSing, for all the wow arena e-sports subhumans. You can walk through people so there's no real hitbox.

Crafting is the same old shit. You're never going to ever actually craft shit you'll ever use till you're max level. It's always a most efficient race to max craft level and salvage everything/sell it off in the trading post/auction house. The abundance of equipment far better than what you can craft completely overshadows all professions except cooking which coincidentally requires more mats and bag/bank space.

Equipment is very boring. Stats are extremely boring. It's literally damage, crit, and hp. No joke. I miss when mmos had tons of arbitrary stats. I guess that's just too complicated for their target audience.

sPvP is literally an afterthought. It's such a casualfest for casuals who are quieter than the grave and just rush in to get as many kills as possible. It's either kill somebody or sit on a point to capture it then run off to find someone to kill or capture the other team's point. Seriously?

How is this tripe supposed to keep my attention in 2012?

In the days before World of Warcraft struck gold (back when MMOs still were trying new things), there was a game where the power of magic spells varied inversely with how frequently they were used. That is to say, not just by your character, but across the server.

That's just one example of how you could design to encourage the constant seeking and hording of knowledge.

I want to play an mmo where there are only melee classes with very limited ranged options like weapon tossing. Also it has to be very crafting based where every equipment in the world has been made by somebody, no monster/chest generated equipment. To enhance the value of a piece of equipment, every section of the world map has a fixed amount of hard metals while organic materials like wood and leathers are near unlimited. If a zone reserve has 0% of all metals, it means it's all been mined, crafted and is part of an item a player is wearing. To prevent hoarding and equipment sitting on inactive/dead accounts, all items require maintenance, and will deteriorate over time if not properly cared for. Equipments with hard metals that aren't maintained rust and return to the original metal reserve of a zone eventually. Organic equipment just rot away and disappear. Harder areas with more challenges contain the rarer ores.

Here's the story: Unconscious space people drop in from space to colonize a planet, except they barely have any knowledge of anything except what they are taught by the ships they dropped in. The only thing they know is to build structures with lots of smooth surfaces, right angles and air conditioning. And weapons. The world they drop in is wild and full of dangers so they need weapons to keep building and colonizing.

Whoa I kind of went off on a tangent there.

MMOs suck.

This was one of the few MMOs I've played that was actually fun.

Why do people like trash like Guild Wars, Mabinogi, WoW, Rift, and all the others? The unpredictability of humans is the only feature that an MMO can offer that a single player game can't do a lot better, but very few MMOs take advantage of it. They just make you grind, do stupid dungeons with stupid people, or have some PvP system where nothing really matters and it's just another form of grinding.

Haven and Hearth and games like this were good because they captured that feeling of exploration and they were really scary. Half the game was filled with crazy Russians or Koreans, everyone was a homicidal lunatic, and you would get an adrenaline rush whenever you saw someone because there was perma death and they were probably coming to kill you.

Combat in MMOs will always be second-rate, but if they're smart then they can work it to their advantage and focus on features that work best in an MMO like sandbox gameplay, crafting, building homes, a very large game world, etc.

An MMORPG with out classes is limited. I hate those I AM A SPELLSWORDHEALTANK THAT CAN DO EVERYTHING ALONE types. Classes enforce choices, play styles, and cooperation. They give you a unique identity AND a sense of belonging. They let you also have outfits that indicate what you are. (I like customization but I also like class specific sets, so you KNOW that guy is a rogue or archer or healer)

Now when they only have like 3 classes, it's just as bad. I think a system where guilds could choose which skills you're able to learn/use as part of their guild would be an interesting system. There would be a bunch of classes while not forcing anyone onto one role. But I think classes are best. Being able to learn healing spells and attack spells isn't as fun as being a battle priest or paladin.

That game gave me PTSD.

I spent several hours searching for an empty area to make my house and then I started making my house. Over the course of about a week I made my little log cabin, I had a very cute garden, and I was beginning to make other items.

I was plowing a field and suddenly a man in a large bear cape appeared at the bottom of my screen and walked up towards me. He said, "how r u? :) were u live? RU?" and I replied and said hello, asked him how his day was going, and that I did not live in Russia but I lived in the United States. He didn't say another word and he immediately attacked me and beat me until I was unconscious and paralyzed on the ground. After this he said, "move n u die. ok? dont move u fukker"

I laid there, filled with terror, as he ransacked my home and began to destroy my things. He didn't say anything else but eventually he left. I waited 10 minutes because I was too scared to move and then I stood up and tried to see if he really stole everything. Seconds later he appeared at the bottom of the screen and said, "i told u. ur dead fukker" and he beat me to death.

I developed a twitch and large amounts of paranoia since that incident occurred. If I try to play an MMO then I twitch as soon as I see anyone walk near me. Even as I type it now my hands are shaking a little from the memory.

I 100% agree with you. Without classes doing their own job, then there's no true teamwork which to me defeats the purpose of an MMO; working together to accomplish a goal. If I want to be a do-everything-myself type I'll go play an RPG by myself. MMORPGs need groups of specialized classes that each have a job in instances, and their different jobs can only be completed by relying on the other classes to do theirs. That's team work, not zerging an instance with a group of solo-minded players with self heals, blocks, and high dps attacks. That's just working towards a common goal, there's no teamwork at all.

I hate how MMORPGs nowadays:
-have some form of quick travel to get to your location in short time, ruining the feel of being in a big world with unique locations
-have next to nothing that requires heavy grinding, whether it be for leveling, items, or whatever else
-have blurred the uniqueness of classes and characters by standardizing abilities/roles and allowing characters to change between classes

All of these changes are done to casualize the game and make it more accessible to the masses, but in doing so it ends up ruining the experience of what made older games great and satisfying to play

Sure, there's a whole lot of fun in combat, but if they didn't like combat, why wouldn't they at least play with life skills?

I don't, I hate that too. I like interactive action combat based on skill. Tera spoiled me, its combat is just amazing in that sense.

For everyone complaining about combat systems and especially at those saying Mabinogi was the best. TERA and Guild Wars 2 have the best mmo combat systems hands down. The only flaw is one they both share: not enough abilities can be put on the hotbar at once. But the whole actually having to hit your opponent, dodging skills, blocking right, all that is great. Mabinogi is somewhat similar; consider it an early alpha test for combat in these games.

>Classes are largely badly designed. None of them feel unique or interesting
You obviously didn't play Mesmer/Engineer/Necromancer/anything but a warrior. Hell even a warrior is really interesting and unique to play if you stop using standard weapons.

>Renown Quests could be way better
Yep.

>Dynamic events could be way better
This is like saying your chocolate chip pancake would be better if it had more chocolate chips. Most events are fun as they are.

>WvWvW
The WvWvW for me has been a very different experience. I do fine as a thief in WvWvW against even ranged people. It might be just the 3 world that you had. Someone I know that is in a different world from me has problems with his too, different from yours though.

>Combat is actually pretty lame
For some classes yeah. TERA was a bit better than this game in the combat department, but this does beat other typical mmos at least. I have fun every fight as a mesmer. Throwing out clones constantly and swapping between weapons is a ton of fun. Most 'normal' classes can be fun if you put a small amount of effort into straying from convention.

>Crafting
Crafting does suck quite a bit now. Jewelcrafting is probably the only craft you'll actually think "wow, that's a good item!" while levelling the skill.

>I miss when mmos had tons of arbitrary stats
Even the guy who likes them calls them arbitrary. Why use unnecessary stats when you can use simpler stats that get the job done? Also you resistance exists as a stat.

>Even the guy who likes them calls them arbitrary. Why use unnecessary stats when you can use simpler stats that get the job done? Also you resistance exists as a stat.

If you actually meant focusing on various stats that are common in a class or skill tree build, then yes.

If you mean simplifying stats, etc...go back to WoW and LoTRO. That shit is unfun and completely unbalanced, as opposed to popular belief. The only way you're going to "balance" this mechanic and actually make it fun and something not obligatory to rank up to the max is if you do it like Mabinogi.

>This is like saying your chocolate chip pancake would be better if it had more chocolate chips. Most events are fun as they are.

This is the most ridiculous example I've seen in months. No, it isn't, it's like saying it's fucking nothing, because it is.
They advertise it as something powerful and revolutionary, but it isn't, it's just rushed and incomplete shit.

The events? Rushed and incomplete shit? Give me examples of this "rushed and incomplete shit" that the events are. I haven't ever felt like I wasn't having fun doing an event, especially since many of them are part of event chains that lead to bigger and more awesome events and bosses. If they are all so rushed an incomplete I want you to tell me how, because the proof isn't showing itself as far as my experience goes. The worst event I ever had was the one that was bugged when I was level 12 on release day. It was fixed an hour after I reported it, and it was pretty cool fighting a jellyfish 5x my size with 10 other people. I'm not saying they are revolutionary, they're far from it, but they certainly aren't rushed and incomplete shit. They're there to break the monotony of levelling which mmorpgs usually have, and they do that job perfectly.

>Also you resistances as a stat
I meant to throw a 'forgot' in there. I will ignore you said that this stat system was unfun because fun isn't an objective thing. However saying it's unbalanced would be false. WoW holds balance pretty well, you rarely see one certain class or a certain composition of classes winning arenas. The stat system doesn't unbalance the game just by being simpler than older stat systems.

GW2 stats are well balanced as well. You can't throw all your gear into power and precision and expect to live, or throw it all into toughness and hp and expect to deal damage. Each class has it's own unique balance.

>WoW holds balance pretty well, you rarely see one certain class or a certain composition of classes winning arenas

Hahaha, holy mother of god, this is a load of SHIT. You might be saying this because of Pandaria, but it generally works like that.

The whole point of playing Classes like Hunters and Priest is to focus on one or another side of skills, and when you do get the asshole one, it's normally the most useful when it comes to damage and disabling enemies.

There's only little you can customize and it's often in the wrong way, and that's just pathetic.
That's one thing that GW2 didn't fail to fix.

>> No.9686446

I seriously doubt that TERA is going to go f2p, and with chrono scrolls it practically is.
On an unrelated note I think I'm going to quit when they merge their servers. I can't be on the same server with people from Dragonfall.

Does anyone know if theres going to be a GW2 trial?

I think the endgame is just a few hard dungeons and events. Nothing special. Most people who hit 80 either start completing the map, help lower level friends, farm mats/gold, or just roll a new character.

>> No.9686470

>>9686447
I guess WoW arenas have changed more than I thought since I last looked into the scene. Sorry.

Your problem doesn't seem to be the stats though, it's the customization, or lack thereof. If you pick a priest or hunter yeah you're going to be pushed into a certain role because that is what they were made for. Then within that role there are very few combos, usually one is more efficient than others in 90% of situations. WoW isn't a customizable mmo, nobody (smart) claims it is either.

GW2 doesn't have the traditional roles like WoW has though. There are no pure tanks or pure supports or pure damage dealers in GW2. Some people are tankier, some deal a bit more damage, others have an extra heal or 2, but most of the time having someone who excels at one of those things is detrimental to a group. The idea of GW2 is that every class should bring usefulness to the table and be able to handle themselves. Ideally, everyone in your dungeon group has enough tankiness to not get one shotted, enough damage to kill enemis before they get killed themselves, and crowd control. Nobody wants a tank or a healer, they want someone who can take care of themself and in the process take care of the group.

The customization of GW2 comes in how you play out each class. WoW shoves each class into 1 role and a possible not-as-good second role in most cases. In GW2 the choice isn't "do I go dps or tank?" it's "do I go pure damage, sacrifice some damage for utility, or prioritize utility?"

When is there going to be a new mmo where it actually takes more than a week or two to hit the level cap? You could hit the level cap in Tera in less than a week.

I would be happy if there was a new mmo where it took even the hardcore autists at least month to get close to max level.

Priests are probably a bad example though, they've been the most versatile class in arenas since the very start. Rogues on the other hand, are always forced into the flavour of the month spec. Shamans also, to some extent, were forced to heal throughout the majority of WoW because elemental and enhancement just didn't cut it.

Most classes wish they were as wanted as any Priest spec.

I don't know why people think that's so fun or interesting. Like I've said before in the thread, I want the teamwork to be a stronger bond with people relying on each other, instead of a group where the only teamwork is doing the same thing at the same time. What's the point of being good at everything?

The only downside to playing priest in WoW was that no matter what guild you joined, most of the other priests (and usually your class leader/officer too) were female. Thank god I don't have to deal with that anymore.

I agree with you. Dungeons are the least fun I have in GW2. I much prefer the more unorganized parts of GW2, such as events or WvWvW Finishing a GW2 dungeon will never give me the same feeling any other mmo did, which is a bit saddening to me, but I just avoid dungeons with pubs and stick to the other offerings of the game. I still think GW2 is balanced, it may even be easier to balance because if each class is balanced to each other and to their other playstyles then dungeons and pvp are balanced by extension. Downside is little true feeling of teamwork in what is supposed to be team-based pve.

Same thing happened to me, and it scares me to know no matter how bad it ends up scarring me, I'll always come back.

Even now, sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night worrying up if my wheat is up, and if people can tell my place is occupied by the crop rotations, even though I haven't even touched the game for over a year. Yet I still lose sleep and agonize over this shit.
