Main Touhou folder has:

Comics & Sequences,
Cosplay,
Illustrations,
Monochrome & Sketches,
Official Art,
Pairings & Yuri,
Porn,
Portraits,

and Reaction Images
subfolders.

Illustrations folder has scenery subfolder, and portraits folder(which is for all pictures with simple/no backgrounds and little to no interaction) has further subfolders for all the touhous/groups I have more than a couple pictures of.

(And the Touhou folder is inside general "Illustrations" folder which is inside the general "Images" folder, both of those are also subdivided into dozens other categories.)

If you had decent standards, you would save only the pictures that really deserve a place in your heart. You would feel amazingly well every time you browse your picture folder and you wouldn't have that godfuckingugly mess of badly drawn Touhous and inconsistent artstyles.

Well, this thread has prompted me to organize some things, but it's a daunting task. Even some of the "organized" folders have expanded to the point of needing further subfolders, and that's on top of some of the unorganized, general dump directories I have to wade through.

Still, e though my general folders are horribly unorganized with hundreds of images randomly thrown together, I have a kind of instinctive idea of where a particular image I'm looking for is located inside the mess. I hope organizing things doesn't screw this up.

Are we talking about sorting Touhou images?
>>2012
>>Not having separate folders for each character
why.jpg

Seriously though, I downloaded someones collection a couple years ago and it had separate folders for each character, so I just built on that since then. I also have NSFW subfolders, a folder for group images and a few other things. My tips for organizing your collection:

1. Download images into the folder you want them in. -Especially- if you're downloading from a thread with images of one character or something, its easy that way and you don't have to sort it later. If you can't be arsed to sort it up front, don't expect to be motivated to sort it later, especially after it has become a huge pile. Except that...

2. If you download into one big blob, there is one method of sorting I do recommend: rate your images on quality. This avoids the problem some people were complaining about ("save only the pictures that really deserve a place in your heart"... LOL) ACDSee can do 1-5 ratings, Picasa can tag favorites, etc. If you do that, you can focus your effort on only sorthing the things you rated 4 or 5 star or whatever, since those are the images you really like. The other stuff? Throw it in a pile of unsorted images, leave it where it is, delete it, whatever.

I sort my Touhous after general place/area where they live, then subfolders for every character in that place.
For example: Magic Forest > Marisa/Alice/Rinnosuke
SDM > Remilia/Flandre/Meiling/Sakuya/Patchouli/Koakuma
Characters without a fixed place, like Lumia, Cirno, Mystia and others gets a "Various" folder.

Also some various folders for "Pair" images and "Group" images(pairs/groups that are from different places, same place goes in their respective "area" folder) .

I have a 120GB external that acts as "active drive". I use it for accessing files often. It is a mirror of everything the primary has minus games and anime series.
My internal drive is only for installed programs. That way if my computer ever goes kaput, I barely lose any data.

Every two or three months I sync my "active" to my "primary". Right now I've currently got a problem where it's been two months and my "active" started getting CRC errors and has trouble reading files. Unless your collection consists of like 5 images, there is no way in hell I'd do that. I split into category folders and name with a tag or two, and give an artist a folder if I collect a good amount of their works. I've got new stuff to be sorted piling up daily. On top of that there is heaps of pics I didn't bother categorizing from before I knew my collection would grow this large.

I do... Honestly, I feel like its probably the best way to sort images. It's very consistent (very little crossover) and I'm more likely to enjoy images based on a particular artist if I already know I like his style.

This is four years worth of pictures saved up. I dump mostly everything into the assorted folder. If I put my manga/doujinshi folder in there it'd be alot bigger but I didn't manually save those. I've gotten tired of saving pictures so now I mostly save only the good ones. They usually go in somewhere under the cute folder in /a/ random.

I deleted alot of my older folders and I do not regret it as it was alot of stupid crap. I've yet to delete alot of it hiding somewhere in here.

I have a 500GB HDD for all anime related stuff. There's a folder for animes, these are sorted by name and subgroup.
The other folder is for pictures (unsorted but all tagged) the third is for hentai (unsorted but some folders, mostly tagged)

Higher levels are where files are saved, deeper levels are where they're stored. Everything has a place and if it doesn't, it can easily be created. This is an older shot of everything. I've since added an OS-tan archive.

I work like this, every Japanese game or anime gets a folder with art in it and everything that is vaguly Japanese related gets re-named so I could easily find it and put into the root of the folder.
Everything else gets it's own folder but I stopped saving and using pictures that aren't somehow /jp/ related.

Also, images saved from Danbooru are automatically tagged using the extension.

I was actually surprised when I found Konnpyakuyoumu007's tag, both his ridiculous name and that he drew lewd images. I first saw his art on a video somewhere on Niconico.

Holy shit. I see lots of organization methods, but am I the only one who doesn't save pictures at all? I have some archived artbooks, and nothing else.
What's the point in saving all those pictures?
Of course the question is not for the obsessive hoarders. Those guys I can understand; I hoard certain things too. Just not pictures.

It's a good idea. I hate how many artists take down things from Pixiv, or from their website, or even just things being lost to bit rot or other failures.

Anyway yeah I fall into the "obsessive" category, I mirror a couple of artist's websites that I really like, and also recently found a thing to mass-download from Pixiv. So hopefully I won't have any more kamS moments.

That's a good point I guess, but I never really felt like it was worth much effort tagging images since the booru's already do that.

That aside, is there any program that lets you browse booru-style using (IPTC or whatever) tags? Its easy to write them in but without an easy way to search and browse based on them it seems kinda pointless.

Lightroom does tagging but I never bothered. You can tag batches of files. This is what it looks like after you've tagged a few and do a search. The tags with an asterisk aren't matching between the selected files (the ones that are lighter in the main area).

Hah, that's one of the reasons why I started saving every image under the sun. Back in what, 2008? an artist I absolutely loved on deviantArt eventually stopped updating her page and didn't come on this oekaki very often, then said she was probably just going to take down all of the images on her dA and leave. I'm so glad I saved those images when I did, she took everything down the following day ;_;

I had downloaded everything to my desktop and done so for ~4-5 years. My desktop would literally be covered with archives and other shit. When I needed to reformat I would just throw everything into a 'desktop' folder, back up to another drive, and then continue the process. After doing this for a few years I had accumulated three layers of desktop folders (/desktop/desktop/desktop). If you ever saw that one picture of a desktop with eroge shortcuts filling the entire screen and the wallpaper used was of the heroines from さくらむすび then thats what my desktop looked like all the time but with eroge shortcuts, archives, folders, and other shit.

I felt I needed to organize it all and now its so satisfying knowing that all my manga, music, pictures, etc are finally not some clusterfuck mess desktop and actually organized. Some of my larger stuff, like music, are now on their own hdd separated from everything else. I had to hold off downloading shit off PD from C82 just to get it all done.

Had some nostalgic moments looking through all the shit I had from years ago while organizing it all.

I just shove everything into generic folders. Sorting everything into character/type-specific folders seems really pointless to me because you can't just dive in. I would use tags instead to be able to selectively search when I want, but I have way too many images for that to be feasible. Currently sitting at ~16000 images spread out in 8 folders.
