Hmmm... well I think it's mostly just all about keeping in mind where the light is coming from in three-dimensional space. In this pic, the light source is a bit above and in front of sakuya- you also see this from the reflections in her eyes. When shading you need to think about the surface angles relative to light origin.

The character was just part of concept art. It wasn't really a character. You'll be able to customize your character, so that was just an idea for a variation of the player character.

Here is the [horribly drawn] concept art that it (since the player can be female, trap, futa, or possibly something else) was based off of. I drew it with Colors! 3D on my 3DS. The picture that someone else made in the other OC thread was based off of the sprite (which was based off of that concept art).

The foreshortening feels weird for some reason, specially around the neck and hands. I blame it on the fact that it's flat lineart, without shadows to sell the illusion of 3D the brain just goes all kinds of confused.

Don't be afraid to share, man. Criticism hurts, but you can use it to improve your skills.
For instance, try to lightly sketch what you want to draw before you press the pencil to the paper really hard, that makes it easier to erase mistakes.
Also, use references. Using references is a good thing.

Yes I am. I've been doodling when i'm bored and it's starting to become a daily hobby. I'm going to download a whole bunch of pictures and study faces and try to recreate a legitimate 2D face.

Are there any programmers that would be willing to work on /jp/ Milk Tea? I'm studying Python, so that's the language that I was hoping to use, but if we can get a couple programmers that would rather use something else, that would be fine too. I'd like to ensure that the game will be playable in Windows and Linux, so that seems to be the only concern regarding language.

The planning for game mechanics is pretty much done, I think. I've tried to write out a bit of very general programming logic to follow and I don't think this project should be too complex. Players should be able to walk around, interact with others, and sort through some menus. Please let me know if you're interested.

Here is a picture that the artist made of Meido, who will play a role in the game (at the mansion, of course).

/jp/ Milk Tea is a project to make a 2D piece of life game along the lines of Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon. The game will take place in and around a town where players will primarily stay at a mansion. The inhabitants will primarily be little girls. There will only be one masculine male character, a carpenter. Any other males be traps. There will be futa too. Those details won't really matter much to gameplay though.

Emphasis will be placed on developing relationships (friendship or romantic) with the other girls/traps/futa. They will develop through various means, primarily like the social links in Persona games, but with more interesting events (as opposed to doing the same thing most of the time).

Aside from that, you will be able to grow plants in the garden (similar to how things work in Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon), visit the puzzle dungeon (temporary name) where you will be able to solve many Zelda-style puzzles, play a cooking mini-game (the details for this haven't been worked out yet), and a couple other things.

Emphasis will also be placed on earning currency, but there will be various ways to do so. You'll be able to purchase clothes to customize yourself.

The main goal is to make a fun, easy-going game that allows /jp/sies to be the little girl/trap/futa. It won't be a lewd game.

Can I get some criticism? I used the picture on the right as a reference for my drawings. The top picture is supposed to be a copy of the reference and the bottom picture is me trying to draw the Reimu in a direct frontal perspective. Hands are stubs because I don't know how to draw hands and I don't see the value in drawing ugly ones; also faces are blank for the same reason.

I was trying to draw it as accurately as possible, mostly focusing on proportions. I know I don't really have the skill to draw it realistically, but I did try to draw it as realistically as I can.

I'm not referencing any book. I took that picture and decided that I was going to try to draw it as accurately as I can.

I can see what you mean by cylinders. When I look at my own arm there are parts of it that only bend according to whatever joint it is attached to. When I look at my Marisa figure, her elbow joint is not really shown so it does not look that realistic.

Hopefully i'm getting the right lesson out of this: The human body has a lot of round shapes and you could draw pretty much the whole body using cylinders, so if I break down the body into shapes I will have a better understanding of how to draw more realistic bodies. I also (hopefully) understand what you mean by flow. The transition form one part of the body to another. My flow is not great because the transition to different parts of the body is abrupt. Better understanding of anatomy would allow me to draw transitions better.

Basically what I mean is instead of trying to copy the figure you should analyze it and find the rhythm and flow of it with gesture drawings first. Once you do that you can construct it using shapes. Then once you can construct it you can start worrying about anatomy. Gesture is very important in figure drawing since it exaggerates the way how a figure moves and gives it life. Without a gesture it would be very stiff and boring. Art and drawing books help quite a bit to learn to practice.

Okay, so get the general overall shape of the entire figure and it's major components. Then break down the major components into minor geometrical shapes, then break those geometrical shapes down into detailed anatomical structure. I'm gonna focus on the first step before I go into something like anatomy just so I have a solid foundation and experience.

Go look for a drawing instruction book. Doesn't matter which one, browse a couple and see whatever suits you.

Not necessarily a figure drawing one, since some of them would naturally assume that you are able to SEE what you're trying to draw, when you clearly can't at this point.

If I remember correctly, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain explains those things pretty well, and it's generally pretty okay for absolute beginners. Don't pay attention to reasoning behind the methods, just do what the book says.

Also, start with trying to draw simple objects before you move to ridiculously complicated stuff like people.

I read maybe a third of it, then dropped it since I learned stuff of that level long ago and it wasn't anything helpful to me personally.

But it does go in length about teaching you how to see properly, and that's an invaluable thing that's all too often assumed to be obvious for any aspiring artist when actually it's anything but.

I can't say for any advanced content, though, but the book DEFINITELY didn't seem like it's taking any shortcuts.

It's obviously targeted and utter beginners, and not conclusive in the slightest, but I wouldn't be so readily dismissive of it.

That book teaches fundamentals that wont help. The first 5 pages of Michael Hamptons figure drawing book teaches more than that book does. The best advice is to go to a life drawing class. If anything the only book i'd recommend would be ber dodsons keys to imagination over drawing on the right side of the brain. Concept art would be better for asking questions than /jp/
