I'd like to interject:

What you're referring to as duMB, is in fact, GNU/duMB, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus duMB. duMB is not a mental state unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities, and vital system components comprising a full mental state as defined by POSIX.

Because of the built-in permissions system of the GNU/Linux filesystem, binaries and users can't do anything to the filesystem without the granted access to the superuser: called Root.

You can still hack into a computer using GNU/Linux, but doing so isn't usually done from the Kernel or even OS level, and is instead done through one of the programs commonly given Root access (such as X11).

There's an easy modo if you don't think compiling from source is fun (Ubuntu, Mint, Mandriva, etc), various package-managed types (Debian, RedHat, openSuSe) and even Slax, which uses a web-based interface to make a customized kernel and packages it into an iso for you.

Or if you're a try-hard, you can still compile Gentoo, Arch, or Slackware yourself, but really, it's never been easier to use Linux.

What you are referring to as Linux is in fact GNU/Linux, or as I have recently taken to calling it, GNU+Linux. Linux is just the kernel and only a part of a system that the GNU+Linux user would recognize as an Operating System. Without the core utilities and libraries that the GNU ecosystem supplies, the resulting system would not be the same as you are referring to. So please give due recogniction to the people who have the made the GNU+Linux user experience possible and do not use the term "Linux" as to mean this operating system class.
