What the fuck just happened here?
Could they just not be bothered to make a route for the best heroine?
And it was also surprising that Raichou is supposed to be the strongest warrior out of the four there. Sadly they didn't even show the fight.

Other than this...distraction, the route seems to be decent enough. It feels slow at times because of constant buildup, but it's getting better now at this point.
I really liked the character development in here, particularly Kageaki's. The scenes with Hikaru were awesome, especially the one under the moonlight after Kageaki runs away.

Guro could be about aesthetics, about the human body how it could be slashed and how it reacts etc. What do you think surgeons see everyday ? They see gore. It's not your lucky wagon to hop on and pour pedophiliac material into the concept. It's disgusting, and it's coming from someone who can stomach a good amount of gore.

>> No.9594910

>>9594898
It's essentially saying
"Woah now, I don't want to see any underage looking girls, I'm not some kind of sicko! I just wanna see people slashed up and mutilated!"
It's entirely stupid.

>> No.9594915 [DELETED]

>>9594898

But guro isn't solely about the mechanics of seeing the body mutilated. It's built specifically around the aesthetics of disgust, of seeing how far the body can go in ways that no surgeon would go, since their job is to cut the body to cure it, not cut it for the sake of cutting.

Let's also keep in mind that said mutilation of the body is often not consensual, while pedophiliac depictions (although I personally object to classifying Saya no Uta within that category) are not necessarily so.

>> No.9594982 [DELETED]

>>9594910

You don't even see, or I should say, I didn't see anyone getting slashed down in Saya no Uta, I liked the concept art, just like I liked the computer game Amnesia. Not that I find guro particularly fascinating, but including pornographic material into a concept as guro, that is drawn in anime style, I believe that's inevitable so I can understand porn in guro, until it a point... That point being pedophilia, when did pedophilia become socially acceptable to even fantasize about ? It has not. It's absolutely disgusting and decadent in every term, more than guro could ever be, and for that reason reading Saya no Uta has been a waste of time for me.

I'm completely new to visual novels, and I didn't really know where else to ask this. This probably sounds like a retarded question to you guys.

Are you supposed get all the endings in a visual novel? Or do you just play it once unless you really enjoy it?
I'm playing fate/stay night right now, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit, but I don't really know if I made the right choices. I read that getting all the endings takes really long, so I don't really know if that's worth my time or not.

In case of novels like FSN, which has a completely enforced playing order, you should do the three main routes, particularly since the last is the best one.
Generally, in VNs with an actual storyline, doing them all is the good idea. I mean, Fate route in FSN doesn't tell you anything beyond the very basics.

Nowadays VNs are a lot less "choose your own adventure" than they used to be, so most of the time you don't really get any choice in what is going to happen. On the other hand, there's still games with completely non logical choices that get you a bad end or a route you didn't aim for.
I use walkthroughs because I want to avoid the latter and skipping through the game 20 times to get everything on my own isn't exactly rewarding either. They also tend to tell you if there's actual bad ends worth getting.
Of course, there's also a lot of cases where you don't need a walkthrough at all.

It really depends on a VN though. I think you really should try to experience games like Remember11 (30 possible dead ends) without a walkthrough, unless you really get stuck, since the point of the game is untangling the infinity loop by yourself. How you got a specific bad end actually makes sense most of the time.

Games like Caucasus though... Ooooo boy, hope you enjoy getting 詩音逮捕 ending about a million times without a walkthrough. I still don't understand how the flags for the individual character routes were supposed to work. 999 too, since the true ending requires VERY precise choices and there is only one damn save slot.

Only in two routes.
Makina: It's pretty obvious which choice is the right one when Yuuji exclaims that "this crying face is similar".
Amane: Pretty much a guess game of which one has higher survival probability. The "good end" choice could as well had lead to a similar bad end where Amane sacrifices herself. Though her bad end was worth reading anyways.
Sachi: Her bad end is a really convenient "lol car crash" that had nothing to do with the previous choice.
Michiru: "Goodbye kiss" leads to happy end, while... "Asking her to stay" leads her to trying to commit suicide. She leaves either way and the consequences make no damn sense.
Yumiko: This too was a bit better, since it was already foreshadowed that Yuuji had made some preparations to take down Yumiko's father.

Perhaps I should have said "some of Grisaia's bad ends". Makina and Yumiko's made sense and Amane's was pretty forgiveable, while Sachi and Michiru's were just "Oh man, we definetely need to have a bad end for these routes too, but we can't come up with anything good". Not that this was some huge, game breaking issue either way.

The story is completely linear, with only a single proper "Bad End" (the rest are just simple Game Over screens). If someone dies, the chances are that they're dead for good.

So with the Little Busters anime coming out soonish, I figure I should actually get around to playing the VN so I can act smug in front of the /a/ types (and to avoid spoilers).

Here's my dilemma: I've been holding off for the EX/ME version to get translated into English, but it's looking like that's not going to happen in time for the anime (if at all). I could play it in Japanese, but my moon skills are still pretty shaky. I've played a few moege in Japanese successfully, but my reading speed is spectacularly slow and I have to rely on text hookers and Rikaichan, etc. Or I could play the original release in English, and then play just the extra routes in Japanese. The latter would save a lot of time and I wouldn't have to worry as much about not understanding things correctly, but I hear there were some changes made to the original routes in EX as well. I'm not sure how major they were or how big of a deal that is.

What do you recommend?

>> No.9612338

Just play the translated vanilla LB content, and then you can always play the EX stuff if/when it gets translated afterwards, or in Japanese afterwards. While there are some changes made in parts of the routes, it's not really that big a deal, and you aren't missing much. Refrain, Rin's route, the stuff that matters, is essentially the same.

I don't want the culprit that's raping her to end up being the guy she likes, though. so you can just spoil that for me if that's the case.

Also, the art is pretty nice.

If rape makes you uncomfortable then you might want to refrain from playing it, I had to skip some of the H-scenes even though I didn't flinch at games like euphoria. Seeing the girl's mental state etc. after looping was definitely the most interesting part, to me at least, especially in the last route when more things get revealed. The rapist and learning about him was a pretty significant part of the plot so I don't really want to spoil it straight out, but it doesn't end with the girl forgiving and living happily ever after with him after a big twist or something if that's what you're worried about.

It depends on the VN i'd say. I was able to convert the English translation for fate stay night to the PSP version. It involved extracting script files and doing some scripting. The language was called onscripter or nscripter or something, can't recall..

Try to find which engine it's running on first. There is a global extractor called Crass which CG rippers use to extract data, it can also work with script files, etc., depending on the engine. A mirror of the tool is at the TLWiki tool page, since I think the creator's page already went down.

As for a guide... since there are so many engines on use, I can't tell you something in specific. I also assume you are not comfortable with reverse engineering an engine, anyways. Plus, doujin games usually use one alternative of NScripter or krkr because they're freely available. There's also tools for those at the TLWiki page.

>>9613345
(O)Nscripter is the engine it runs on. Since it's been ported to many consoles (like the Wii, hah) it's a good start to "porting" something.

The PC version of F/sn is made in TJS (and ran in krkr2/KAG3) which is some hybrid scripting and tag-based language W.Dee came up for use with his engine.

Finished Saihate and then went to read some explanations because the ending was kind of an overload of information at the end.
That was pulled off fantastically well, I mean mixing events from two differnet points of time and making them look like they were continuous during the whole novel, I just couldn't suspect anything.
I still have some doubts related to Fueko's route because the last hour info was kinda hard to digest. Otherwise damn fine VN with some great writing even if I felt the conclusion before the epilogue was kinda underwhelming.

Well this is weird. I thought this was going to lead me to a bad end, but it keeps going. Is this something I should leave for later? I haven't finished either main route yet. I have a few questions on JQV.

What happened with the ending. Natalia said that in order for a world to come into existence, that there needs to be an observer and an observer observing the observer. Since Shimaji went back to his own world, and waited for the clouds (the connecting junction between him and the observer Mei) to disappear before leaving his transformed fate, that his subjective world ended, but how did he, or his result/offspring, or whatever that little girl was end up in a world where all the people who he was responsible for the death of lived? And why was Mei there? At first I thought that that might have been where she ended up after she subliminat-ed, reached an understanding about what man was, the world on the other side of the boundary that Shimaji pushed Ayana into, but I'm not sure if that's really feasible, it seems too convenient.

Also, what was the relationship between Mei and Shimaji, ultimately. I get that it was the observer and the observed, the clouds being the point of contact in which two separate spaces established by the breakdown of probability existed concurrently, and that Shimaji was the animus of Mei, and that Mei was on top of being his savior, the essence of humankind from which Shimaji could learn (both of which Natalia shut down as being mere projection), but is that it? Also, I didn't entirely get what Natalia was criticizing him for in this passage, when she railed Shimaji in the infirmary "孤独の世界で、自分が何かを選択するとしたら。 サイコロを振って、
自分の思うがままの目を出せるとしたら。。。
「望んでいただろう?」
「求めていただろう?」
「あにくんが勝手に人間と定めた。。。弱者たちを」

Completed the Maou chapter in Muramasa a few hours ago, and I'm still tearing up every time I think about it.
The ending was probably the most emotional scene in the game,Kageaki stabbing himself as part of the curse, and Hikaru receiving love and dying in peace.
About Hikaru always emphasising the lack of a father to Kageaki, her rants made too much sense after that big reveal at the end, made me feel silly for not getting the implications earlier.
The latter parts of the route in general were just depressing. Shirou and Sakurako I felt at least deserved a somewhat happy end as they did absolutely nothing wrong, but I suppose that double kill/suicide was the best or most fitting way for them to go.
At least Chachamaru got what was coming to her, Raichou was too awesome.

The route itself did get a bit ridiculous at points, especially the time travel. It just brought about more questions regarding Sayo and the forged bomb girl. Could anyone explain to me about those two, as there was very little information about them throughout the VN.

Also, how long is the epilogue?

>The route itself did get a bit ridiculous at points, especially the time travel. It just brought about more questions regarding Sayo and the forged bomb girl. Could anyone explain to me about those two, as there was very little information about them throughout the VN.
My takes on both points:
The Forged Bomb part seems to be either about the future bombings or about the tribe she comes from (similar to the Ainu/dwarves). Or it may be a field test or something similar.
That probably wasn't Sayo, but the original owner of her Tsurugi, Bathory herself. That is, if she and Sayo aren't the same person, which seems plausible.

>Also, how long is the epilogue?
About as long as the first chapter.

Are there any visual novels with a great "concept"? By that I mean something akin to Umineko's "colored text". I think it was a genius idea and the best thing about the novel, so I'm interested to see if there's something not exactly the same, but on the same level.

It's been a long time since I played the game, but I remember thinking that the Forged Bomb basically went though a process similar to forging, except without the armor. Like the blacksmiths bestow upon their armors their philosophy/way of fighting/principle, her dying amongst complete destruction basically sublimated her into what she is.
And yeah, it was probably implied Sayo either is Bathory herself or her discendant. Kanae went to Europe after all.

>"concept"
I think you mean "fancy gimmicks" that the games "are based around" and yes, there are some. I'm answering to all that might be interested. I think the latest one that does something different is Furuiro Meikyuu Rondo which experiments with a "keyword" system where you "collect" them as the story progresses and select them instead of actual choices to keep your friends' "destiny meters" from going to zero and killing them.

The upcoming PC port of Root Double has some kind of "SENSES System" where you adjust your "trust meter" with characters instead of traditional choices. A bit different, but brings I/O's "Defragment" system to mind, where you unlock more scenes in other routes as you go on. Continuing from the same writer, Remember11 has two main routes which affect one another. Getting a bad end in one route, saving it and trying out the another one leads to a different bad end from their perspective.

Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate have their respective "delusion trigger" and "cellphone" systems which aren't actual branching choices, but do affect the outcome.

I heard Aoiro Rinne has some kind of interesting "key" stuff going on, but haven't tried or spoiled it for myself yet.

Then there are your VNs with general gameplay ranging from action to point'n'click. Rance, Baldr and Innocent Grey series are the ones coming to mind.

Oh, and maybe *insert* Days which have shitloads of "realtime choices" (but pretty shitty stories otherwise).
Anyone know more?

Just finished the epilogue, and it was done quite wonderfully. It's nice to see Kageaki finally get his resolve (and that demon grin was awesome too).
Sorimachi was an awesome villain as well. He was always a threat in the background and screwed over Kageaki numerous times
.
I also felt very...happy when I saw this, especially considering the stuff that was going to happen to the world afterwards.

Overall, the VN is probably the best one I've read thus far. I enjoyed it immensely, and it's nice to see how well done and creative the entire setting was.
Most of the characters were great, had actual personalities, and it was very easy to get attached to them (and also painful when someone dies).

Analogue is pretty much "Modern Feminism: The Visual Novel", thus it's obviously a serious contender for "challenging the reader" and "bringing difficult subjects to light".

http://killscreendaily.com/articles/reviews/longest-hate-story-ever-told/
>Limbaugh’s remark affirmed what I had been reading in Christine Love’s latest creation Analogue: A Hate Story, an impressive work of digital fiction with a strong feminist stance. As a heterosexual male, sexism is not something I’m 100-percent comfortable writing about. I thought I was just signing on to play a videogame. Yet here I am, writing about feminism. So what does Analogue say to the straight male? That sexism is such a big part of human history that sometimes we don’t even notice it—I think. And to solve it, I need to get over being straight?

Oh alright, guess I'll just have to deal with the lower IQ at /vg/ next time I want a serious opinion.

I'll just continue trudging through Kamikaze Explorer for now. I don't know why but Aoyama Yukari's voice as Mishio could kill me from diabetes from the sweetness. It's sad because the other character that can do that, Tomo, doesn't have a route.

You are trying way too hard to fit in.

In regards to Analogue, if you read the article itself the author actually kinda of likes it. Personally, I thought it was okay but I wasn't a fan of the shifting through emails type of story telling. Granted, the mere fact that the author is an original English writer provided for at least a refreshing read and a break from all the shit Japanese writers that wind up writing for moe memes and otaku smut. However, at that point, you might as well pick up a decent book.

Watching other people speak Japanese isn't going to improve your understanding. I suggest you use Anki for the kana, read Tae Kim or pirate Genki for the grammar, and then grind the shit out of vocab with Anki (the Core2000 deck is a nice place to start). I never bothered studying the kanji individually and I have no regrets.

Once you've got somewhat of a grasp on the grammar and a bit of vocab, start reading moege with Furigana Inserter + Rikaichan so you can get a feel for the language in context.

You want to speak and listen as much as possible. The main barrier of learning is getting results. The thing is, listening to anime will do you know good until you can understand atleast some of whats said. When you understand the most commonly used words, the rest of the words can be understood through context.

This is not the only way to learn. It is just one of several dozen methods to use. Realistically you should be moving through things and material.

Download Heisig's book, Pimsleur, listen to audio, anime, music, kanjidamage, lang-8. You should have a folder of japanese sites, and you should check them daily. You should always do things daily. But to keep it fresh and different, you have to vary how and what you are doing. Make it fun and you won't feel it's learning at all.

Well, if you're asking for my personal taste:

I used to love 三度の飯よりゲーム好き, but it died about two months ago. fujioka was a bro, but he found work and decided to drop the site. I wish him luck.

You might have seen images from ニトロ有線式 around as well (with the nitroyss watermark), it's pretty popular with some people. He posts bits from magazines like PUSH, Tech Gian, etc., figure reviews, sometimes does eroge site update overviews. He has cool cameras.

For 2ch bits and eroge news now I read あしたがみえない, basically takes threads of interest and comments from 2ch and summarizes them into an "article". ニュー速VIPブログ is one that I thought died earlier but he seems to be resuming as well.

For retail/doujinshi works I check アキバBlog. It's quite comprehensive. にゅーあきばどっとこむ is a similar site.

For general vidya news, はちま起稿 and 4Gamer. They churn out updates faster than I can read them most of the time, so I click on relevant to my interest headlines most of the time.

>> No.9626225

>>9626217

And for random tidbits, twitter. The Japanese love twitter. I have a list with the eroge companies I've checked, but I am unsure if a link would get through the spam filter.

I'm also interested in which other sites people read here, I've handpicked these sites over some time but I am always looking for new resources. It keeps the learning process fun. Guess we'll move to the new thread though.

And who or what could be this Kid in the end? Revived Porshion? Some kind of "Gii & Kia"-mixed kid?
Althrough the story was pretty much linear there were some things in the end i didn't expect to happen (in a positive way). And it was one of the fewer VN-endings that was actually ~good~. A VN has to end with a big BOOM and then recommencement.
