I think the original rebuttal against the posters demanding proof was more along the point about how obnoxious it is to facetiously (faecestiously as the pun goes) issue proof demands. Proving something to a skeptic is pretty difficult online because it takes a lot of effort to arrange all the materials for a proof. The skeptic then once again says "that's not proof" which is very cheap and easy. By repeating that, one side has a huge amount of work while the other has no work. This tactic is often used by "trolls" in the past years on 4chan to waste other people's time.

Thus, it is reasonable to assert that someone demanding proof should have at least tried to research on their own a little bit before issuing such a time-wasting demand.

The other problem of "prove it" is that it is used by people too lazy to look something up. So, they try to change it from a request into a demand and blame situation by demanding proof.
