Let's celebrate for Touhou week:
- August 11st: EoSD's birthday
- August 14th: TD, GFW, PoFV and LLS's birthday
- August 15th: IN, UFO, HRtP, SoEW and Soku's birthday
- August 16th: SA's birthday
- August 17tht: MoF and PCB's birthday

So today's UFO's birthday? Shit, that means I have to play it.

I've kind of burned myself out on these games. At the start of the summer, I finally 1cc'd EoSD (after first getting it five-and-a-half months prior), and since then I've 1cc'd every integer Windows Touhou (aside from PoFV since I don't care for it) on Normal, beaten every Extra Stage, and 1cc'd all of the same games on Hard EXCEPT for UFO. Not that it's been particularly difficult, it's just that I don't feel like playing these games for awhile since I've been playing them ALL SUMMER LONG.

>>9583407
Do it man. I just 1cc it with SanaeA. It's a very good run. I did perfectly from stage 1 to stage 5. Got a bit wrong at the start of Byakuren and died a lot at her last card. But it's still good nonetheless. I also 1cc IN today with Malice.

SoEW is still too hard for me. I already clear everything in Soku and SWR. Gonna try HRtP now.

Yesterday i failed to 1cc no bomb TD but still managed to 1cc GFW and PoFV.

Tomorrow maybe not so tired because i'm quite ok with SA.

I torrented all of the games recently but I can't get them to work. I never had a problem with any of the touhou games I downloaded of off /rs/, but these torrented ones are wanting me to use mounting software and put everything in Japanese locale and whatnot, like a VN, which I did, but I still can't get them to start.

I know that /jp/ isn't tech support for people too stupid to use computers, but does anyone have any idea what's wrong?

EoSD isn't hard enough that 1ccing the game would depend on being able to see your hitbox. If you can't roughly gauge the size and location of your hitbox without having it visible, you weren't going to beat the game on anyway, because most patterns (on Normal) don't have hitbox-sized gaps. When you can 1cc it handily, you could probably do it again without the hitbox patch just as easily.

More power to you if you insist on playing without the visible hitbox though.

Secondary here.

ReimuA is the easiest shot for EoSD survival, but I do prefer MarisaB when it comes to playing the game. She's better for silly challenges.

I used to main SakuyaB with PCB, but the bomb timings were too hard and SakuyaB was way too bombing based for me. Nowadays I've become fond of ReimuA, but I still play without bombs since it is too hard for me to time the bombs.

I've played IN easy with every team, but I have the most hours on Yuyuko solo. I kind of like Magic team too for the yuri subtext, and I've done some lunatic runs on Border team.

I play PoFV against one person, we always play Youmu versus Tewi. I'm Youmu.

I really rarely play MoF. But I did some lunatic and extra with ReimuC. Nothing good came out from it.

SA is not my thing, but I usually play ReimuA. I've dome MarisaA for the dialogues, too.

I spent way too long doing UFO MarisaA. I will maybe revisit it some day, possibly resort to SanaeB. But that shall wait.

I don't really do TD, but I did a few Reimu and Marisa things early on. They were bad (the things I did)

I didn't think too highly of it, as it seemed like a bomb that you would use if you weren't sure if you were going to get hit or not. 'Cause it's hard to stay discouraged with Riz around.

I reached Byakuren with no lives, even after bombing like an asshole on stage 5. Not good, not good. Granted, I fumbled on every stage, but I can't really count on optimal stages 1-4, and even then I'd arrive at her with ~4 lives. Shou's attacks and stage 5 in general is much too scary to not bomb, especially while on a full run with my hands shaking three feet in every direction, and I can imagine it if hangs on that, I'll have to pray for good luck to survive.

That attack cost me a perfect Byakuren with SanaeA just the other day. It was the first time I had died to it in months. Byakuren's first nonspell isn't that bad once you get used to it. It's also easy to know when you are clipped so you can bomb early. It looks to me like you were just nervous. I'll review your replay thoroughly once I'm at my usual computer.

Also, if you need something to help you feel better: http://replays.gensokyo.org/download.php?id=23222
Even Riz fails sometimes.

Nervousness cost me many runs when I was starting out. If I were you, I would just focus and not let it get in the way. Once you get more experienced, you will be able to use it towards your advantage. If you are so nervous that you think you are going to get overwhelmed, take a break and drink some tea.

Relative newcomer to Touhou here, I had an amazing run (for me anyhow) and got to Eirin's boss fight in IN, but ended up losing.

My biggest problems are fighting Keine, Marisa and Reisen. I'm not sure why I have such a terrible time of dodging their spells. At least with Reisen I know it's because I have no idea how to dodge pic related.

Plus, by the time I get to Reisen's fight, I have barely any lives left from fighting Marisa.

I spent a lot of time studying superplays before playing, so I knew everything that would be ahead. Not only that, but I bombed everything terrible in the first loop. How is the 360 port of Ketsui, anyway? I have the PS2 and 360 ports of DOJ and I'd say both of them are great. Much better than the PS2 port of Mushihime-Sama, which kind of scared me away from buying ports for awhile.

Keine: I tend to unfocus during her nonspells, it seems she doesn't shoot as many bullets that way.

As for that spell card, you need to go with the flow and find another safespot when it freezes then keep following. The concept is pretty simple but I can't really do it on normal well. I find the card after that (with spirits in each corner) to be even more problematic.

And in other news, easy UFO 1cc. Damn is that game generous with resources if you play the ufos right, but I'm still not very fond of the mechanic.

I used to have problems with that spellcard when I first started playing Touhou. Thousands of runs later, and now I can capture it no problem. All I can say is practice, practice, practice. Practice until you get sick to your stomach and your hands begin to stop working from the fatigue. And once you have it hard-wired into your memory, you will never ever be able to forget about it!

Might get a bit rusty if you haven't played for a year or two, but the skills will always come back. It's like riding a bike. As for Marisa, she can be really tricky for the first couple of plays. Use Stage Practice for awhile and make use of the extra lives you get there. Instead of just blasting the hell out of her, study the spellcards she has and attempt to time it out or even just no a no-bomb run of the boss. You would be surprised how much this has helped me when I first started not, but different practice methods might not work for other people and vise versa.

I wish I had that much time to practice! That spell isn't too bad, but there's variation, so sometimes you'll just get shat on. When the bullets phase out, fly up while counting 2 seconds in your head, then get to a nearby gap (the phase out lasts 2.5 by my reckoning); unfocus if you have to. On normal, tapping down while focused will move you at about the same speed as the bullets. As a bonus, here's a visual guide to her first (much easier) spell.

There are people who can clear the other games perfectly fine, but always fail at PoFV unless they use one of the AI killers(primarily Aya and Medicine) as well as people who 1cc the PoFV with ease, but have large amounts of difficulty 1ccing the other games.

In terms of whether you should use Trance or bombs first, as purely a survival thing, I'm not sure if there's an answer that fits all.

Something to keep in mind is that the spirit items you collect are enhanced in Trance mode. This includes the pink spirits and the green spirits; collecting them in Trance mode gives you two pieces for each spirit instead of one. Best way to get the most out of Trance is to use it whenever a bunch of pink and green spirits appear. This can be from when a bunch of those tough enemies (that drop pink and green spirits upon death) spawn, or after breaking a boss's Spell Card.

>> No.9592949

>>9592632

Bombs are generally a more disposable resource. Similarly Trance mode as mentioned by the guy above me can and should be used to maximize Green/Purple spirit pickups, which in turn translates to a much larger number of available Bombs. There are a couple of places, off the top of my head stage 4 and 5 specifically that have an excellent number of enemies to maximize on Greens.

However, in the case of the final boss and her respective stage, there isn't any particular reason to not use either before the other as there are no drops to be had. The only thing to consider is, if you use Trance Mode, are you maximizing damage or will you take her out (and thus lose effective damage).

I wonder if anybody else on here agrees with me that IN on hard mode (with default lives and bombs) is quite difficult compared to some of the other games (obviously I'm not saying it's harder than SA/UFO hard though).
I mean, I beat PCB hard on my 4th attempt, I've not tried EOSD many times, but each time I did, I got to sakuya/stage 6 most of the time. IN though has been giving me some trouble. The weird thing is, I suck at spells/non spells that are supposed to be easy, and am quite good at the ones that are supposedly harder. Take Reisens second spell for example, I am terrible at that one. Now I know how to do it, I'm not looking for any advice or nothing because I don't think that would help at all...all you do is look out for a gap, go to it and press down pretty much, but alas, I fail at it. Reisens third spell however, I can do 80% of the time.
I also find Reimu harder than Marisa.

Is anyone else bothered by how much smaller bullets ARE compared to how they APPEAR? I don't mind the bullets' hitboxes being SLIGHTLY smaller than the bullets' appearance, but here, I'm unharmed despite how my hitbox is COMPLETELY within the bullet. The bullet wraps around my entire hitbox, and I'm fine.

That's bullshit; it shifts focus to hitbox-memorization instead of dodging. Of course, you're always doing both, but this tilts the scale too far to the hitbox-memorization side. Kogasa's first spell card in UFO's Extra Stage was simply annoying, as a large part of it was figuring out how much bullets could overlap before they were ACTUALLY too close to each other for you to squeeze between them.

I'm okay with the significantly smaller hitboxes for those giant bullets with the white rings, though. That's what makes those bullets interesting; you were unharmed in the white border, but touching the colored center killed you. Dodging dense waves of those giant bullets by finding a path through overlapping, clearly visible borders is interesting. In later games, though, it seems that even part of the colored portion of those bullets is safe.

Even though these games are hard, having the the bullets' hitboxes be so much smaller than how the bullets look makes it feel like the game is going easy on me, and it's insulting. These games shouldn't be harder than they look; they're plenty difficult on their own.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Am I the only one who wants the bullets to appear smaller to match their hitboxes, or the bullets' hitboxes to be expanded to match their appearances? Obviously the latter choice would require the bullets to be less dense for the difficulty to stay the same, but whatever. Do you guys understand what I'm saying?

Sharp. You're right, stage practice is the reason I like to end stages without tokens. You see how at the end of stage 4 I had two too many, and spent a big part of stage 5 wondering how to get back on track while frantically dodging bullets at the same time. It didn't work out all that well. I also never seem to know how many arrowhead-shooting fairies appear after bombing Nazrin's spellcard, since it relies on the speed of capturing her nonspell as well. They tend to take me by surprise every time. The rest of the stage is just unexplainable, I should be able to dodge the bullet hail, and I bombed the shit out of Shou just to make sure I'd pass. 'Cept then again, I probably wouldn't have passed were it not for the bombs.

That is part of the reason why I don't recommend using stage practice too much. You seem to like it a lot. As for the post-Nazrin fairies, I think they are easy to predict and manipulate. Your strategy for them should be to time your UFO summons and endings in such a way that it prevents the fairies from spawning too many bullets. The rest of the stage is pretty hard. For the doom fairies, I would just stay in a corner and try to dodge. Having a UFO there also helps. As for the following two walls of orbs, you should be able to memorize that. The only time it gets tricky is if you switch shots a lot like me. Also, you don't have to bomb all of Shou. You can dodge her but be very ready to bomb. This works well if you focus on collecting bombs instead of lives.
>This lack of 1cc'ing despite months of lackluster effort has gone on for far too long.
I know that feeling.
>>9595576
That happened to me twice before I got my LNB, and I still died twice to Meister when I got it. I think the best way to do it is to start on the far left side and try to stream when she starts firing. As for Gensokyo, I don't know of any big strategy for it. I mostly focus on dodging bullets and hoping not to get clipped.

I've found tackling the game one puzzle piece or pattern at a time is a good way to get it memorized, since you only have to think of one thing at a time. = I'll be stuck on Nazrin midboss for a while, since I'm not practising anything else until I snap a capture. That mentality has its downsides. Stage practice helps with that.

Of course, stage practice means I won't get much diversity, since I'll mostly just reset when I mess up, and when my UFO route gets messed up on a full run I'll panic real quick.
Because I collected that wrong UFO, I couldn't summon UFO to cancel bullets at the right time.
Because I have to bomb to cancel bullets instead of UFOs, I used up my bomb and couldn't bomb to collect the next UFO.
Because I couldn't collect the next UFO, I die in the next section, having no bombs and no UFOs for bullet canceling.
Because I died in that section, the UFO ran too far away, and when it finally get close so I can grab it, it's too late.

Stage Practice helps with everything. I play it mostly because people have these wonderful ideas of trying to piss me off during a full run. I waste a lot less time if they decide to try it during a Stage Practice run.

Oh my fucking God those are annoying. She stopped time, and to dodge the daggers coming from above, I had to quickly dodge to the left. Out of a clump of daggers on the very bottom edge of the screen, a single dagger (that was completely buried underneath other daggers) went straight up and killed me. It really made me hate the game for awhile, but I kept playing through sheer masochism. Seeing no progress really depressed me, but I carried on. Eventually, I got the 1cc after thousands upon thousands of hours played. Possibly about 5,000 hours played. I started playing 08 on lunatic, i'm a bit confused. I always hear people saying that reimu / marisa are the hardest part of IN, but I find myself having more trouble with Keine than the rest of the game, she wasted most of my lives and bombs, but once i got past her I mainly breezed through the game no trouble.

I finally did it.

What is the quickest way to improve at STGs as a whole? Should I endlessly grind the Ura loop to perfection? Play one-credit runs of Lunatic? I am confused, and it feels like I've now hit a wall.

How do you chip away at skill walls, /jp/?

Brr caffeine does not go well with Touhou. I'm bored to death in every pattern that isn't dense and fast as fuck, but when they are dense and fast as fuck I can't concentrate on where the bullets are, let alone dodging them.

odd, it has the opposite effect on me, and makes me dodge easier

Oh god, my caffeine-addled brain gets sick euphoria from playing (and failing) 90 fps, though. I just no-missed Kogasa on Lunatic. I can't even describe the rush I had while dodging that shit.
>>9601467
I dunno, it doesn't seem to help the tiredness that gimps my skill, all it does is makes me really frantic and unable to concentrate at all. Maybe I should try it AFTER waking up.

>> No.9601536

>>9601244
Start low and move up through the oncoming bullets during the slow down. You don't need to get all the way through, just where you'll be safe when they speed up. Stay near the middle; I know it seems counter-intuitive, but try it.

I need a break from dying to curvy lasers on normal shou, which is the easiest game to 1cc on hard?

i would say MoF or PCB are the easiest. though if you can get past keine in IN, the rest is a breeze

Probably a combination of that, a good powerful forward shot and a long, screen clearing bomb. Agreed with >>9600071 to an extent. Especially the bombs mostly feel like total garbage.

Same dude? Not bad. I got SA down on easy recently, the run I cleared was actually the first time seeing Okuu. That was a really cool fight. Losts of Orin's fight still seem baffling as hell, though.

Yeah same guy. I'm pretty mad at myself that I didn't beat her the first time (as seen in >>9600561) (and thus not 1ccing SA ) but I'm still happy that I finally got to beat her. I've had a perfect run with no deaths or bombs up to Orin but then I messed up at Okuu again. I'm just really bad at bombing I think.

Losing two lives to Byakuran on hard is sucking?

And finally, a full 10 months (!!) after first playing it (and any touhou in general), the IN normal 1cc comes out. Three down, five to go.

I'm a decent player I guess, but I can't handle stress...
If I am close to clearing, my hands start shaking uncontrollably and sweat starts to run in my forehead.
When I'm done I can barely stand up from the chair because my legs are so weak from nervousness.
Congrats to your progress. Keep it up!!
I have only cleared on UFO and TD. Maybe I should try something else too.

3 lives and 6 bombs + 2 x 3 bombs from lost lives assuming he didn't get hit with any bombs left.

So he pretty much bombed everything, that's not really that good.

I'm more impressed with how many resources he got there with.
