I tried playing Minamoto a while ago, with the intent to unite Japan and then slowly expand its influence. Other countries declared war on me while I was conquering Fujiwara and Tachibana and I got into a clusterfuck of four different wars at the same time with over 15 countries, and kicked so much ass that my prestige and Shogun influence both reached 100. With my Shogun influence over 70 I couldn't declare war on Fujiwara or Tachibana anymore, and with my prestige at 100 I couldn't get my Shogun influence under 70, and due to the earlier war with Fujiwara and Tachibana they distrusted me so much that no matter what I did they utterly resisted vassalization. With no way to conquer Tachibana and Fujiwara and no way to diplomatically annex them, it was completely impossible to unite Japan anymore, all because I played too well.

Seriously, fuck this game.
