I really try to avoid otaku who seem like they have underlying issues like a lot do. It seems like a lot of people just end up in these subcultures because they were unattractive/unpopular in school and sought somewhere they'd fit in. On the other hand someone who looks normal and doesn't have autism or anything can't be accused of this. Anyway these people are mostly crazy and they're hikikomori/friendless for a reason; even if you tried to make friends with them they'd scare you away.

Another thing that bothers me is that despite being so obsessed with the aesthetics of 2D, they make absolutely no effort to improve the 3D world at all. On the contrary, they don't even bother to maintain their appearance and make 3D worse for everyone. They fill their rooms with tacky merchandise when they could be turning their surroundings into something magical, bringing the 2D world to life. They talk about how charming their fictional loves' personalities are, but act repellently themselves.

Definitions only change if there is compliance. Otaku hasn't changed, go to Japan and you will find the 'creepy' otaku still around. Nothing has changed, there is just people trying to jump on the bandwagon because they see it as a 'cool' thing to be thanks to the recent glorification of otaku in Japanese media.

A style of clothing is different from a certain type of person. Otaku isn't a 'style' or a 'label', otaku will only ever be what it is.
