I've watched and read tons of anime shit about highschool but I still don't know how the year works. When does the year start and when does it end? How long are the actual breaks compared to murrican schools?

Does this thing with desks with lids that hinge go on throughout all of Japanese schooling? And by extension the concept of having your own desk with your own stuff. And teachers coming to classrooms for each subject instead of students going to classrooms for each subject.

That sort of shit stopped in primary (elementary) school for me. Since day one of high school you got a locker to put all your shit in and had to carry all your books to class. And you sat where ever you wanted sharing desks with other people.

The sense of not having people right next to you would feel really strange to me. Even in primary school the desks were still together so you could chat easily and share uhh... resources.
