The Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 176.83, or 1.3 percent, to close at 13,286.37 in Tokyo, the lowest since April 16. It was the 10th-straight day of decline, the longest since March 1965, according to the benchmark's Web site. The broader Topix index slumped 18.92, or 1.4 percent, to 1,301.15. All but three of 33 industry groups on the Topix tumbled.

They did not count on the importance of aircraft carriers and that they were out to sea.

Nobody believes they can scare another nation. All things like that do is make people angry even if they can't logically win.

Closest anybody ever came to "scaring" America was when the bodies of dead soldiers were dragged through the streets of Mogadishu and that was more because of embarrassment then anything like fear.

To understand the percentage of certain demographics in a population, you don't need to have every person in that population register in some great counting. You just need to randomly ask a sample size. As long as it's truly random, and the sample size is large enough (in America a large enough sample size for polling is ~5000), you can accurately calculate demographics.

There's actually a definition of atheism. It's pretty simple. "Omnipotent beings do not exist." Did you know, two different muslims can also believe in completely different things? Or two different buddhists? Since religions don't specify every minute detail of their doctrine, there's a lot of variation in all religions, atheism included.

The intensity of radiation falls off by a factor of r cubed. That is each unit of distance you go from the source of radiation divides its strength by the distance x distance x distance. That number gets big fast so the danger falls off quickly.

The only reason we feel the sun so strongly is because it is a huge fucking ongoing nuclear explosion. A fusion reactor is a candle compared to it.

tl;dr lots of shielding and physical distance.

Radiation protection, magnetic fields that control the plasma since theres no know metal that would stay in solid form when it cam in contact with plasma, so yeah the plasma just floats there. Oh and no fusion yet if there was a working reactor most of the world energy problems would be solved.

In 1997, JET produced a peak of 16.1 MW of fusion power (65% of input power), with fusion power of over 10 MW sustained for over 0.5 sec

I have a different take on it. Some atheists are actually on the same page as certain theists. These people make up two sides of the same coin like matter and anti-matter. I would argue that even though these two groups argue that they actually share the same religion.

In other words some atheists frame their beliefs in opposition to other's theology.

Being agnostic I reject both arguments and thus the entire "meta-religion."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism_and_religion

>Atheism, in its broadest definition, is the absence of theism, viz., of belief in a God or gods. The degree to which one can be considered an atheist while simultaneously being and adherent of a sect of a traditionally monotheistic, polytheistic, or non-theistic religion is the subject of ongoing theological debate. Some people with what would be considered religious or spiritual beliefs call themselves atheists; others argue that this is a contradiction in terms.

This parody is actually pretty close to how I see things. There are basically two "meta-religions" in the world. Those who frame their world-view in terms of monotheism and those who frame it in terms of polytheism.

Most western atheists belong in the monotheism camp because they tend to share the belief that polytheism is a pile of superstition. They argue over whether there is 1 god or if there is 0 gods with the Christian/Muslim/Jewish theists.

Interesting thing about omnipotence is that it violates what we know about complex processes. The Church-Turing thesis basically says that we can't know how a computational process will turn out unless we actually run it (and even then you may need infinite time and resources).

So, if there was a god who created the universe the only way he'd know what I was gonna do 15 billion years later would be to actually wait 15 billion years and see.

Of course we can just give god the power to know, but that kind of thing is up there with asking if god can create a rock too heavy for himself to lift.

Japan aims to restart solar subsidies in 2009

TOKYO: A Japanese ministry aims to reintroduce subsidies on solar power equipment in 2009 to help boost Japanese firms' shrinking share in a 1 trillion yen ($9.25 billion) market, just as Germany cuts state support for such gear.

The move could give a boost to Japan's Sharp Corp which fell behind Germany's Q-Cells AG as the No. 1 supplier of solar cells in 2007, when China's Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd also nudged Kyocera Corp back into fourth place, analysts said.
