I stopped watching dorama back in 2002-2004 when it was really going to shit, but before then there were series with pretty unique storylines (at least to compared to American dramas) or at the very least great acting.
No idea what's out there now.

Kekkon Dekinai Otoko was probably the only J-drama I liked, although it had a shit ending. Densha Otoko was fucking cringeworthy, and I can't see how anyone could enjoy it.
