SotN IMO.

One of the best games I've played.
I am trying to make a game influenced by it, I'm still learning a language though.

Back in its day, SOTN was a gorgeous game full of detail and fun to play.

New Castlevania games have tried to follow it, but they fall short since they lack the proper gothic atmosphere it had. Too much fabulous, I would remark.

Too bad these games never sell too well... The genre is pretty much for those in the early and mid-20's after all.

The last real metroidvania game was stupid disciple, and that was like 2008.

ecclesia'd be fine if it wasn't reusing the same 3-5 rooms for the majority of each area. worst example's the entrance hall, you'll see the same room design over and over.

as for fuck, i kinda liked the desu sisters. too bad they were pretty much the only thing i liked from that game.

Castlevania 3 should have been your favourite because of that SWEET ASS VRC6 CHIP.

Seriously, if you haven't played the Japanese version go get the ROM or something. Most modern emulators can emulate the VRC6. The music is just amazing.

It was, however, about whipping shit and having fun. That's the important thing.

Most of the metroidvanias(in my opinion) are more character-driven than gameplay-driven, and most of the characters are brooding faggots.

It bores me. I just want to be a vampire hunter. The holy powers are enough, I mean you can throw a cross and it's a boomerang! Eat my righteous fury, children of the night!

I guess I can understand that though. Everyone likes something different.

The soundtrack in ecclesia wasn't the greatest either, and it hasn't been for quite a few games. Underwater segments felt slow and clunky, all the item-finding and hoarding was also reduced drastically from previous games.

Stage design also felt uninspiring because there was little to work when it comes to large, open areas. You can't just throw in platforming death ledges in metroidvanias, nor can you design platform-hopping because there's literally no sky stages. Stage design was only in the classic style for the first stage and the castle near the end.

Fucking hell, the magnet glyph? Used 4 times within the first 2 stages and then scrapped, only to come back for the dickwad obstacle course bonus stage. Design team literally got lazy,I guess.

dialogue is absolutely sparse in any metroidvania (never played the 3D ones), what little there was was easily disregarded in favor of the excellent exploration, how is that character-driven

>> No.9340502

>>9340459
It's kind of pointless though. The best example I've played was Aria of Sorrow. You grinded for all these powers or whatever and you were basically a god, but then you just found a couple you liked and stuck with them. I get that everyone has their own preferences, but in my eyes the best weapons and subweapons have existed since the very first game.

More character driven than the other castlevania games are, with the exception of maybe Rondo of Blood with it's cinematics.

If you're going to tell me that Portrait of Ruin and the Sorrow games didn't have a bunch of dialogue, though, you're wrong.

In the GBA ones there was a lot of dialogue. It was mostly exposition, though.

I know I'm going to sound like a nostalgic ADHD manchild, but I preferred it in games when things just happened. Like the villain wouldn't say MWUHAHAHA I AM DRACULA INCARNATE I AM STEALING THESE SEVEN RELICS TO RESURRECT MY TRUE POWER but there'd just be some two second scene where the enemy flies past and visibly steals shit. Even if it's supposed to be dark and realistic, you could at least consider it an abstraction of how things "actually" turned out.

Pretty off-topic question, but does anyone know where I can download a copy of Dracula with the *original* soundtrack?

I found a DVD rip on Demonoid but there was this weird buzzing throughout the whole thing. I thought maybe it was just the best restoration job they could do, but the comments seemed to suggest it was a problem with that particular encode.
