I lurk 東方＠ふたば all the time but I just can't post on it. I simply can't get any god damn proxy servers to work. Firefox always times out when trying to post there (or anywhere) through a proxy.

It's more like "Who is the guy?" "who's this fellow?" or "This person gave me a ride" when you learn their name, you start using that name. As in Japanese it is considered polite to actually use a person's name when directly speaking to that person. The closer you are to that person, the less suffixes you might use, you might switch to their first name. etc. Referring to someone you know as a friend with unnecessary politeness or distance can make them feel you want to distance yourself emotionally, or do not want to associate with them.
