A cute hikki appears in your room. You have 2 options:

1) Send her back where she came from and in return you recieve 1 year's worth of trashy cheap cup noodles
2) Have her stay and do whatever you want, but she also can't go outside your room, ever. Not even for a bath, you'll have to bring in water and sponge bathe her yourself. She also needs to eat and you'll need to find a way to feed her. If you neglect her for more than 24 hours she will instantly die and leave a horrid permanent rot in that room that is so bad it will never go away. She doesn't age. Her curse on your life will disappear and she will disappear as soon as you die if you choose number 2.

Choose carefully.

I'd go with 1, then throw away all the ramen.

There's no point in taking care of her, if she has nothing to offer at all, aside just being cute. Plus, I'm a Hikki myself, and would end up getting pissed off having someone around me like that.

It is, by its very nature, hipsterish.
The hipster reinforces his weak self-esteem by becoming "the expert" in a certain subject. He is right, everybody else is wrong. That's why he stereotypically will stop listening to a music band when they become too popular.
This "I want to be unemployed" is basically the same thing, self-hypnosis into positive thinking, to ensure that the helplessness to change one's fate won't bring about crushing despair, combined with elitism and several other coping technologies, for example the "learned helplessness".

(of course, I say all this without any degree to my name, so feel free to prove me wrong)

it's logical enough.

but you can't truly say hipsters are doing the optimal thing all the time though.

>optimal
Coping with a problem is never optimized. It does not get rid of the problem, and it often brings about new ones, just like limping after a leg injury can permanently hurt your body all the way up to your neck.

Most of what you've seen must be a lie. Why would a company pay anyone out of appreciation? If they could get away with forcing you to do shit for free (which they try to do anyway through secret unpaid "mandatory" labor), then most businesses would. Not all, but most.

The most you could argue in favor of your point is when you help a friend out with something and they pay you $20 or something because they appreciated the help. It's a fair point, but when you look at what society thinks of money as a whole, you realize very quickly that people only value the purchasing power it brings. Hence "gold diggers" and such.

About half of the manga is complete bullshit "original content", haven't watched the anime so I can't say.
It would seem that the original ending of the novel was too depressing for the general public, or so the editors thought. Anyways, if you want to know how a hikki truly lives his life, read the novel.

>Why would a company pay anyone out of appreciation?
They appreciate the work he does by paying him.

What about people who live and work for long-term goals? They are the majority. Society as a whole values stability and consensus.

It's pretty flattering that you've got such a mad-on for me. If I can help you come to terms with your sexuality in any way, just let me know.

But I won't suck your cock, dude. So stop asking.

Too idealistic, dood. I used to think that way too, optimistically and all, and then I took a good hard look at the world and removed the rose-tinted frames for a bit.

In case you didn't recognize, the division of wealth in the US specifically (but in other parts of the world as well) points to the fact that companies care more about how much profit they bring in. Things like employment recycling and threatening peoples' jobs because "they're replaceable" is not appreciation, and are very real situations - I was victim to both personally and it's completely demoralizing if you're sensitive to that sort of thing (like I am).

Society in general doesn't look too far past next month. Individuals may work towards a long-term goal, but those individuals are generally a /minority/ seeing as most people are struggling to survive month-to-month. Sure, realistically they prefer stability, but most people dream about being rich so they can also afford all the things they want. It goes beyond the need for stability and into greed. It's clearly evident in everything we're led to believe. What's the first thing most people would do with lottery money that they won? Buy an expensive house, a dream car...they'd squander it after "retiring".

tl;dr - companies don't appreciate anything but profit and the #1 long-term goal for most people is "survive" because that's what they're struggling to do month-to-month.
