How long did it take you to get to a sociable level of Japanese? I'm currently 22, did nothing with my life in HS, crawled through college, and only started pushing myself to learn Japanese this year. I could go to Japan for cheap but I explained to my dad I would only go if I could speak with people there. (But anon, they speak English there anyways) I learned kana 2 years ago and I have a box of kanji (white rabbit) that I review whenever I can. I haven't hit up a genki book yet because of my classes but I should be graduating in December.

I've never really practiced speaking. Maybe I could communicate through a notepad.

That's my point. I didn't want to yell at my Dad so I just ignored him.

ah okay.

thinking about it in time is kind of wrong, you should look at it in terms of hours of study.

google both sentence mining, and the 10000 sentence method.

get a tutor too, there are a tonne of poor japanese students around. i wouldn’t bother having a set date you should be functional by because everyone learns at their own pace anyway.

I don't know if there are any good tutors around and I'll be joining the wonderful workforce in a few months. Hooray for being a fuckup before.

Well, because the majority of people here who can understand Japanese have never bothered trying to speak it. Most of us are just in it for the porn and thus aren't really equipped to answer OP's question.

if literacy isn’t presupposed you can learn by immersion anyway i guess

I was looking towards conversing with people there. Even though I'm prepared for the tsunami of "baka gaijin", I'm probably more knowledgeable of their culture than some regular Murrkan there. I've gotten comments from classmates about knowing about east asia.

this. there's a huge difference in looking at text and being able to read it and listening to someone and understanding them and then actually being able to respond to them and not make yourself look like a complete fool or homosex.

people don't exactly talk in real life the way characters talk in eroge. you'd probably be better off immersing yourself in jp imageboards, but that's also most likely going to be off.
