SA is a great example of what I'm talking about. Look at the characters:

Another catgirl.
Another birdgirl.
Another ojou-sama.
Another imouto.
Another oni.
Etc.

The derivative cast combined with the poor quality of the story line just leads me to believe that ZUN ran out of ideas, but felt a need to release something, anything, in time for Comiket.

From a gameplay point of view, its another story, but let's face it, SA was kind of a low point character-wise.

To be honest, when I think about SA's story, I get the feeling ZUN originally planned it to be manga. Like how SSiB tied into IN, SA ties into MoF.

Not to say that makes it bad, just not suited for a game? It also stands out compared to MoF's plot, UFO's plot and TD's plot, who all follow a similar formula.

When I think of SA's story, I think ZUN was itching to make it so much more. Really, from the very beginning it feels like something that could have been a novel. It's very, VERY well done, and all of the characters are fantastic (even though I don't really care for Parsee or Satori). MoF, UFO, and PofV had some pretty awful characters (Sanae, Byakuren, Aya), but SA and TD had very well designed characters.

They're simplistic, but by no means bad. For the stories to have a good effect on you, you need to check the back stories of every character. SA is a lot more boring if you don't know about Satori or Koishi's backstory, or if you don't understand the prior events.

I actually do like Hatate. Hat eater and breast cancer are the only two birds that I like. Mystia just doesn't really matter to me, and I only like Aya for sex appeal. I don't know what to think when I read posts like this.
Looking at your examples and wording it just seems like exaggeration everywhere.

I wouldn't say that any Touhou game is that much better than any other, when it comes to characterization or character design. That to say, compared to how you feel.

It's true that the characterization also have all have their overarching themes, and those are more or less consistent, but if you look at the characters alone I think it's a different matter.

For example, I love the UFO characters, but they are all pretty mismatched. I guess that's why people generally don't like them. I admit that it's clearly a weakness the game has in that aspect, but I still enjoy the characters for what they are, and I honestly can't say that I even subjectively think that the characters themselves alone have a bad design. And that's how I feel about all the games, in the end.

Not sure where I wanted to go with this, just that I think it's silly to say that one Touhou game has "awful" characters and the other "fantastic". It's all relative to our tastes our tastes of course, but when you look at the thought and ideas behind the characters I think it's apparent that most of them have a lot of work behind them, and that work payed off.

Well, I only refer to singular characters as awful. EoSD has Meiling for me, PCB has Alice, PofV has Aya, MoF has Sanae, and UFO has Byakuren, but IN, SA, and TD are the few games that introduced no characters that I hate. That is, of course, personal opinion, but I generally like the casts of those three games.

That being said, the SA cast, specifially Koishi, don't get a lot of hate compared to the other casts. IN has Mokou fags and Kaguya fags shitting everything up, PCB has Alice, Chen, and Yuyuko, which get a decent amount of hate, MoF has Sanae and Aya, PofV has Aya and Yuuka, EoSD has, well, everyone shitting on other characters from that game, and so on and so forth. SA seems to be lying under the hate radar since it's been out for a while.

Just because I don't like the genre of the movie doesn't mean that I think it's bad, for example. It's not "my taste" but I can recognize and appreciate the hard work behind it.

Sometimes though, it feels like I am the only one in the entire world who reasons like this.

Because truth is I don't understand the hate for people either, a lot of the time. People seem to hate so much, for such strange reasons too. Unless someone had hurt me directly on a personal level, I would find it hard to say that I hated someone.

Hell, I've liked every cast and character one way or the other.

In the end, which cast people think are good or bad comes down to personal opinion.
