It's not that Korea is "sucky" per se, but it's kinda outshined by its neighbors.

China, the #2 world economy that also happens to be experiencing exponential growth.

Japan, the #3 world economy with the highest standard of living in Asia.

Both also have much stronger cultural brand images around the world with Ninjas, Kungfu, Karate, Great Wall, etc..

Japan is still plenty conservative, but the general trend is towards becoming more liberal as you can see with the recent shift in political power from the LDP to DPJ.

Doubt it, Korea was pretty much a dictatorship until the 80s. A lot of the people were brought up under that regime.
