"Right click" has a well-defined meaning and is widely used in user interfaces because it's immediately obvious what it means. Changing it to "sub click" is pointlessly confusing because no one uses that terminology (except for you, apparently).

Why would I quit? Especially in the middle of a large project that would be sort of a dick move. But honestly, I enjoy translating, and I enjoy letting other people read titles that I liked. I don't see myself stopping any time soon, unless I find myself so bogged down with other obligations that I am no longer able to translate at an acceptable rate. I don't intend on ever quitting in the middle of a project, though. I feel I owe the people waiting on my translation at least that much.
>>9150245
Unfortunately not. We had our hacker look into it, but it wound up being far more work than he felt like doing for what is arguably a fairly small benefit. Personally I think that the voices that were important for the story are already included anyway, and the effect of having them start and stop lends them a certain weight that they lose if every line is voiced. So I'd hesitate to say that the FVR version is actually even superior. But again, it wasn't my call. I can't force someone to devote hours of their time to a task they have no interest in completing.

not same person but /prog/ /jp/, how does one go ahead and "learn" reverse engineering? Isn't it mainly analytical work?

I guess there are a handful of things you have to know though, like cryptography, and another handful of tools to work with. I have a small background in C, C++, Java and Python but I feel that's not really important when it comes to things like this.

In the end, I'm curious as to how one starts off a project like reverse engineering engines, after I start I think I can learn as I go, but I need a push in the right direction.

Maybe if I need a push in any direction I don't make the cut for work like this, but I just want to try and fail miserably if I am fated to do so. I can learn that way too.

>> No.9154620

>>9154591
Well you learn the basics of ASM code, learn how functions work and programming basics such as if, for ,while, case loops and how functions use system dlls .. etc.
There are a number reverse engineering tutorials out there that aren't specific to visual novels but cover typically things like nags, timers and packers.

Visual novels tend to be the deep end since they often use packers and variety of encryption routines that need some experience working out.
Also you will need to know how to program to write your own unpacker and patchers.

The best way is to pick up something small or something already done, I recall a cross channel tutorial somewhere that goes through the process of how they hacked it.

>>9154481

Cryptography is actually not too significant in VN work. If you want to learn RE, the best place to start is at the bottom. Read something like http://www.amazon.com/Code-Language-Computer-Hardware-Software/dp/0735611319 to get an understanding of how the whole SW/HW stack fits together. With the exception of C/C++ and Asm, prior language knowledge (especially high-level ones) won't be very applicable except for one thing --- if you've written something in a compiled language before, disassemble the binary and try to mentally decompile it back to it ssource; the correspondence between machine instructions and source statements is the important part.

>>9154620
The majority of the "tutorials" out there are not really useful for gaining any sort of deep understanding. They're just "do X; do Y; do Z;" for a very particular circumstance. But except for that, read all the documentation you can. Intel processor manuals, file format documentation like DOC(X), PDF, PNG, SWF (even though it is unlikely you will encounter PDF in VN engines, the idea is to gain an understanding of how file formats store information and how to write your own documentation.

As for which engines to start working with: try something older (mid 90s), they tend to be less complicated and smaller. Another alternative is to take something that's open-source like ONScripter and approach it like it wasn't.

I don't have a great deal of time but if you contact me with any specific questions on this subject I will try to answer them.

Hey guys. We're just getting started with poking around the PSP version now that most of our technical problems solved or disabled within this short amount of time and as you can it, we've been able to port most of our hacks to it and it has the same scripts as the Ebikore+ version on the PS2. While there might some minimal porting involved, we will need more time to find a deswizzler for the images and for editing the images.

My question is that should I release a PSP version along with the planned support for both PS2 editions, even if we're not going to be able to have time for us to let it reach the same parity as the the other two versions of the game? This would include not having a menu translation and the GUI will have to stay very much Japanese. I would appreciate your feedback very much, /jp/.

Quality > quantity, go for polished PS2-only release instead of two half-assed ones.
I'd even skip PSP demo entirely and go for polished simultaneous release of the full game for PS2 and PSP, in addition to milestone releases for PS2 ("milestone" = "common route", "N days" or whatever Amagami can be split into).
I can only run this on emulators, and PS2 quality > PSP quality.

>>9157188
>using retardedly outdated compilers like Borland
Your education is to familiarise yourself with the principles. The basic principles like conditional flow and loops have not changed; if you've understood them, you should have little difficulty with ANY system. To give a concrete example, recognising a loop in 50s mainframe code should not be any harder than one in an x86 or x64 application today, or in a PSP/PS2/etc. binary. [BCPP/BCC was quite popular in the 90s, so you might come across a VN engine compiled using it too; as I mentioned above, older compilers have simpler output.]

>Why bump the thread? My post wasn't (and isn't) of true relevance to the main topic. I'm not working on a specific VN atm, even though I want to. Whenever I sage, that is the meaning I try to get across.
I know about the "meaning", but the reality is different; sage has more effects than that, and if you don't bump a good thread it will fall off the end precisely because of the "shitposters" bumping their contentless threads. The ones complaining about the quality of /jp/ and continuing to be passive and yielding aren't going to do anything. If you want a more interesting discussion YOU have to make it happen.
